My thinking as well. From another article, the three kids were ages five, one and a half, and seven months. The mom left the car running and unlocked. EDIT: not that locked and turned off (and no a/c) would be better. Just don’t leave your damn kids alone in the car! EDIT2: still, probably better than this mom: https://www.fox29.com/news/police-mom-arrested-after-letting-children-ride-in-inflatable-pool-on-top-of-car.amp?__twitter_impression=true

[Report] Eriksson “NOT” likely to be moved on

Well, yeah, I guess he did save us from taking on 4 years of Lucic. It’s the little things... -
US coast guard boards drug smuggling submarine

Nah, Ogopogo works for the other side. Runs drugs up and down Okanagan Lake. I mean look at those eyes. Clearly he’s getting high on his own supply. -
Unsigned 2014 5th round draft pick. Draft rights were set to expire next month (Dakota Joshua completed his 4 years at Ohio State). Doesn’t really affect anything for Toronto (cap, roster, contracts, etc), assuming they weren’t planning on signing him anyway. But gives them a small favour owed by St. Louis. Would be interesting if this seemingly inconsequential move somehow becomes a factor in the Marner situation.

Plenty of analytics guys have played some hockey, although probably very few of them at high levels. Off the top of my head, maybe Darcy Regier is a good example? Regier’s main claim to fame obviously isn’t analytics, but he’s definitely considered a pioneer in the field. Analytics also isn’t really a good department for breaking into team staff employment after a hockey career. Having played the game really gives you zero qualifications to actually do the work. Whereas many other areas, like scouting, coaching, management, player development, broadcasting, etc, offer well-established pathways to employment for former players. Much easier for a former player to break into those other departments, where their playing experience actually gives them a considerable advantage over other candidates. To go into analytics, a former player would have to choose to first educate themselves in math and statistics, and then go on to devote a lot of time and effort to either (1) creating an analytical model/method that actually proves to have evaluative and/or predictive value, or (2) demonstrating proficiency in the current analytical methods, generally by slogging it out in the public realm for years doing stuff like blogging, Twitter, and, if they’re lucky, media appearances (at least whenever media outlets toss some crumbs to a “numbers guy” to come in and do a segment). It’s a long, hard road. And for a former player to choose it, he’d have to really, really, really love analytics, and be willing to walk past a bunch of other employment pathways that likely would get him inside the door much quicker. And honestly, I don’t even believe being a former player adds much real value to hockey analytics. Former players are already very well represented inside hockey operations. Possibly over represented. There’s still a lot of groupthink among former players, as far as how they evaluate the game. Analytics is meant to cut through some of that stuff.

[Signing] Devils sign Jack Hughes

I call deep fake trickery! Something’s off about the pics and video. Plus, look at the close up of the folders: I mean, who the heck is “HUGH?” Probably it’s the actor they hired to pull off this stunt. The “TAYLOR HALL” folder is what a legitimate player file would look like. Definitely still hope, once this conspiracy comes to light. -
Congrats Ryan! Well deserved.

[Signing] Canucks sign Micheal Ferland
SID.IS.SID.ME.IS.ME replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
It’s funny because rumour earlier this year was that Ferland turned down an extension offer from analytics darlings Carolina in the range of $4.5 million x 5 years. Nobody was offering that now, but that’s the reason people went into July 1st predicting $5-6 million with term. Apparently the Canucks were the only team to offer 4 years, but I suspect that several other teams came in with higher AAV offers on 2-3 year deals. Ferland really looks to taken a discount for team/location and the security of locking in for an extra year or two. -

As usual with HF, it’s the very vocal minority having issues. Just look at their poll: Only 10.2% saying it’s a bad deal. 56.3% saying good deal. 33.5% on the fence. For HF, that’s a home run. -
[Signing] Canucks sign Micheal Ferland

Would be great if true, but unfortunately I don’t believe that situation would apply to Eriksson. IIRC that section of the CBA is regarding contract clauses like the “European assignment clause” Petey and Tryamkin received on their ELCs. -

Great “circle back” signing. In the lead up to July 1st, sticker price for Ferland was being reported in the $5-6 million AAV range and with a term of 5-7 years. That would have been a bad deal to sign. At the time, I was shouting “stay away” from Ferland. But $3.5 million for 4 years is a completely different animal. That’s good value for this player, from age 27 to 31. And the Canucks get out of the deal before the potential backbreaking years 5,6,7 when Ferland’s body likely breaks down, and his contract becomes negative value (especially at the rumoured $5-6 million per). Nice signing JB! Well played. -

Twitter saying 4 years, $3.5 million AAV. Good contract if true, especially compared to the earlier predictions of what Ferland would command in free agency. -

The picture kinda looks like Bure had that job covered. -
I know the OP is getting flamed here, and partially deserved for throwing in that unnecessary dig at JB near the end, but the main idea isn’t a bad one. I honestly believe we’d be better off, both now, and going forward, if we shipped out several of our existing contracts, like Tanev, Sutter, Schaller, and maybe Baertschi. Use the returns to help sweeten a move to get rid of Eriksson’s full cap and trade for Gusev’s rights. Use the freed cap space (we could have as much as $28 million to play with) to sign Boeser, Gusev, Goldobin, Gardiner, and Ferland. Lineup might look something like this: Miller Pettersson Boeser Gusev Horvat Ferland Pearson-Gaudette-Virtanen Motte-Beagle-Leivo Goldobin, Roussel (IR), MacEwen, Bailey, Perron, Graovac Edler-Stecher Hughes-Myers Gardiner-Benn Fantenburg-Biega Juolevi, Rafferty, Teves, Sautner, Brisebois Markstrom Demko DiPietro, Bachman, McIntyre, Kielly Swap around lineup (I’m not really attached to any of the currently listed lines/pairings) based on camp and preseason chemistry, and possibly with some of the prospects beating out the depth guys for final spots.

[Signing] Canucks sign Francis Perron
SID.IS.SID.ME.IS.ME replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Francis Perron After two so-so seasons in the Ottawa system, Perron has been a revelation in San Jose, earning an AHL All-Star selection. Subject to waivers next year, the winger, widely considered to be the most skilled Barracuda prospect, will be given a long look during training camp. Sommer, on Perron’s NHL case: Our scouts saw him play in juniors. They didn’t really go on his last two years in AHL. I don’t think that was something he was very proud of. He has a history of scoring. Maybe a change of venue kind of woke him up. He’s a plus-player. Got NHL skill. Can skate. I think it’s only a matter of time. He’s one guy, I think he deserves it. Wilson Jr., on Perron’s future: Next year, I think Perron will be a really good guy to watch in training camp. Scout #1, on Perron’s game: That Perron kid has really good hands and smarts. The problem with him is he doesn’t really play to the inside too much. He’s a really skilled perimeter guy. Until I see him play with more courage on the inside ... but I like him. He’s a smart player. Wilson Jr., on notion that Perron was just a “throw-in” in Erik Karlsson trade: We targeted him in the Ottawa trade as the extra piece. There’s no such thing as a throw-in in an NHL trade. From a scouting perspective, front office perspective, there’s no such thing as a throw-in. He was a 100-point guy with Timo Meier [in the QMJHL] that we thought would excel in a different spot. It’s a credit to the scouts. When people say it’s a throw-in, I see it as a disservice to our scouts. They put in a ton of work to go find a guy, a diamond in the rough-type guy. https://www.fearthefin.com/2019/2/6/18212899/san-jose-ahl-barracuda-san-jose-sharks-prospects-gambrell-korenar-suomela-perron -

JB hangs up the phone on that deal. No way he’d trade a $6 million player for a guy the Sharks only valued at a measly $1 million. -

Further to my post earlier, I don’t want to give the impression that we should expect much from Perron. We shouldn’t. He’s a long shot. Most likely he’ll just be a good AHL player and not much more. But he is still a “prospect” in my mind and a guy with a chance to become a quality player. He wasn’t just a throw-in in the Karlsson trade, but a guy San Jose targeted. Their scouts saw real potential in this player. And I expect our scouts feel the same. Remains to be determined if he’ll reach that potential, but this year in Utica should give us a good idea (assuming he’s not lost to waivers). -

His hockey IQ, playmaking, vision, and hands are probably his standout abilities. Highly skilled (was considered the most skilled AHL prospect in the Skarks organization). Good shot and shot selection. Skating is decent, but not exceptional, at least at the pro level (he’s quick but I wouldn’t call him a speedster). Strength has been a major issue, but he has improved a lot, packing on some muscle in recent years through training and nutrition. Struggled to adjust to the AHL initially, but had a breakthrough last season, putting up some really good totals and being named an AHL All Star. Starting to get a bit of a rep as a “perimeter player” as a pro, but he’s also a skilled guy who seriously lacked in size/strength, so it’s not really surprising, and not necessarily concerning. He’s probably at his most effective playing that style of game right now. I don’t think he lacks the will to get inside and take the puck to tougher areas, but he has definitely found it a challenge in the pros. He will need to continue to work on his strength and hopefully find a way to get to those scoring areas more consistently, because he does own a really good release. When he was in Ottawa, he was actually compared frequently to Hoffman, which is obviously a pretty optimistic projection, but he’s actually not far off, in terms of timeline (their career charts are actually pretty similar so far), so it’ll be interesting to see how he progresses this season. He was expected to get a good long look at the Sharks’ camp this year, with a chance to push for a lineup spot, so he definitely has some legitimate NHL upside.
