  1. Couple Twitter highlights from last season:
  2. Yeah, it’s all about the terms the acquiring team will accept. AFAIK, when a player waives the NMC, it’s basically gone. His agent can, at the time the clause is waived, request that an addendum be attached to any trade to reinstate the NMC. The acquiring team would need to agree to this, otherwise, the trade doesn’t happen. It’s part of terms of the exchange. So if (and hopefully this is the case) the NMC is a nonstarter for the Canucks, then Lucic could only be traded to Vancouver if he agrees the waive his clause and to not request that it be reinstated upon his arrival.
  3. I think it’s quite possible Gardiner is asking too much and priced himself out of today’s frenzy. I’m very curious what the numbers are though, as far as his demands. And what he might actually settle for eventually. I’d actually love to see us circle back to Gardiner, if things go quiet with him and he gets into a waiting game. See if he could be signed for something in the range of $6M AAV on a reasonable term. If we could somehow move Tanev and Sutter out, we’d have more than enough space to re-sign Boeser, sign Gardiner, and sign our remaining players. Left side: Gardiner, Edler, Hughes, Juolevi Right side: Stecher, Myers, Benn*, Biega *Benn arguably plays better on his off side
  4. Good read about Zane’s personal journey and the reasoning behind his name change (he used to be Zane Gothberg): https://www.grandforksherald.com/sports/3704151-und-hockey-name-change-has-deep-meaning-zane
  5. I was kinda hoping that Heed would be JB’s “surprise” signing today (the type that has most people scratching their heads and scrambling over to Elite Prospects to look him up). Underrated player IMO. Certainly he’s flawed (smallish, soft, not a great skater) but he moves the puck really well, owns a great point shot, and has some very intriguing underlying numbers.
  6. Yeah, I honestly haven’t tracked his injury status too closely. But there was a fair amount of talk about his career being done after the Achilles injury (after an ACL the year before), and he still managed to come back. Apparently he’s fully recovered and healthy. Tough for any player to jump back into a lineup mid season, after a serious injury, long rehab, and that much time off the ice. Oilers fans say he looked good in his return, brought a stabilizing presence in the lineup, and seemed to help Matt Benning stay above water when they were paired together. With a summer of training, a full training camp, and starting the next season healthy, who knows? Maybe he gets back to the player he was a few years back.
  7. Definitely. He’s kinda trash at $5.5 million AAV, but on a cheap, short term deal, he’s more than capable of providing some good value. Even with his injury struggles the last couple years, Sekera has still provided net positive impacts (even while basically playing on one leg), whether you look at WAR/GAR, shot share metrics (relative to teammates), scoring chances differentials, etc. His offensive numbers have certainly declined, but he still provides solid suppression stats (events against rates), relative the his teammates, and he does a very good job on some key defensive microstats, like denying possession entries, and creating possession exits.
  8. That was my thinking. Re-sign Schenn on the cheap and have him start the year either as a depth #7/8 or spare player stashed in Utica. Our team history tells us we’re going to have lots of injuries this year (and every year) on defense, so why not keep a guy who we know can fit in well with the team, both on the ice and in the room, and who we can retain for minimal cap and term. Keeping Schenn really shouldn’t have factored into our cap calculations, as far as leaving room for upgrading the defense. His contract would have likely been low enough to bury in the AHL, and if he made the lineup out of camp, he might even save us some cap room, compared to the average salary for 3rd pairing Ds.
  9. That’s a shame, if true. Not that Schenn is anything more than a minor piece, so the loss doesn’t really impact team fortunes all that much. But he was a feel good story, was great in the room, played pretty well with Q, and looked to have found a spot to rejuvenate his career. Would have liked to have seen him stay. Seemed like a good situation, both for the team and the player.
  10. Can’t believe you guys took me seriously to begin with.
  11. No. But I think if EP came back this season and they told him he was too skinny and needed to go eat Chicken Riggies in Utica until he gained a bunch weight, he might just use his clause and go back to Sweden instead. Point is, the clause was important enough to Pettersson and his agent that they negotiated for it. Even before Elias had “earned” his spot in the NHL, he had a guarantee in his back pocket that he wouldn’t have to accept a demotion to the AHL.
  12. Yup. Definitely charts well. Really solid overall microstats profile. Positive WAR/GAR player. Moves the needle in several key categories. And can’t argue with the price. Vancouver’s expansion cousins made out really well IMO. Here are some visualizations (as I know CDC loves these kinds of stats charts ):
  13. Elias Pettersson has a European assignment clause on his ELC. Red flags galore?
  14. Nice spot for him. Former NHL great Billy Smith is the goalie coach/director of goaltending for the Colts, so Silovs should be in good hands. Smith has 15 years of NHL coaching experience, including 12 as an NHL head goalie coach, and obviously a legendary pro career at the position, so he probably can teach the kid a thing or two. If nothing else, should be cool for Silovs to hang around with a 4 time Cup winner, who also owns a Vezina, Jennings, Conn Smythe, and a spot in the HHOF.
  15. Enjoyed that article and especially happy to read this quote from Madigan. He said something similar when Madden was drafted. At the time, I thought it was just a coach talking up his recruit, but it turned out Madigan meant what he said, gave Madden a prime role to start his college career, and Madden ran with it, posting a very impressive freshman season. Hopefully that trend continues with McDonough.
  16. Yeah, but years of twins parenthood work kinda like dog years.
  17. Well, at over 22 minutes a game last season, he is the TOI/GP leader of the remaining UFA class. That means he’s the best Dman available, right? (Only half kidding here. The fact he could eat those minutes on not completely crap the bed last season probably puts him ahead of most of this year’s Dman UFA class.)
  18. I just wish a small, slow, and old team would win the Cup one day. The year that happens, I’m showing up to camp demanding a tryout.
  19. I’m split on the jersey retirement idea. Personally, I feel like when it comes to a team retiring the #1, it should be for a goalie that’s won a Cup. However, Canucks history being what it is, and the precedents set with the current retired jerseys (and comparative careers/achievements of the players who wore them), does Luongo measure up? I lean toward yes. But if we were to retire the #1, I think the best approach would be a joint ceremony, with both McLean and Luongo going to the rafters. Similar to what the Leafs did with both Turk Broda and Johnny Bower. Of course, the Canucks don’t have the same kind of history as the Leafs, and we really shouldn’t try to compare. But I just like the idea of retiring the number itself, and honouring the two greatest Canucks goalies to wear it, instead of honouring one and not the other.
  20. We have a winner! Walker left the Canucks organization after draft weekend to take a new position with the Coyotes. https://theprovince.com/sports/hockey/nhl/vancouver-canucks/canucks-development-department-loses-scott-walker/amp?__twitter_impression=true Which leaves the Canucks with a development staff of one person: Ryan Johnson. Wonder if if this is something the team needs to address? I know there’s some overlap between the Canucks coaching staff and their development department. Same with Strength and Conditioning. But perhaps they should consider investing in a full time staff similar to what the Leafs have in their player development department? I know some people will react with hostility to any suggestion that the Leafs might be doing something better than the Canucks, but that’s a pretty impressive group of full-time development personnel. Personally, I’d love to see the Canucks build up a similar staff dedicated to player development. Drafting and development go hand-in-hand, and it only makes sense to invest money in staffing a player development department to get the best possible results from our picks.
  21. That’s interesting. Wasn’t Scotty at the draft? I seem to remember seeing him at the table and on stage with Pod. Maybe just shuffling positions? Ryan Johnson is already Sr. Director of Player Development. Maybe they just gave Walker a different title? Hard to imagine they brought him to the draft and invited him up on stage for the handshake line just days ago, and now they’re canning him.
