Yeah, pretty much. I mean, even if he’s just a #7/8 guy for us, he brings value. He has history with the Hughes family, so you know he’s gonna look after Quinn as much as he can. He’s already shown that he’ll protect our young stars. And they know it, as you can see from Boeser’s quote. The kids know “Uncle Luke” has got their backs. Plus the whole story of his comeback is one of perseverance, believing in himself, but also recognizing that he had to change up his game to stay relevant, and just being grateful to have a chance to continue to play in league. Have to imagine he’s great in the room, and just having a guy like that around will help with the culture and leadership on a young team.

From tonight’s Athletties: https://theathletic.com/897027/2019/03/31/the-athletties-baertschis-triumph-the-time-schenn-was-pushed-to-retire-the-luongo-thing-and-petterssons-take-on-hughes/ Best Resurgence The most delicious part of the late-season Luke Schenn redemption arc is the revelation Randy Carlyle believed none of this could ever happen. As the story goes, Carlyle essentially told Schenn, who is among the kindest, friendliest giants in the sport, that he should quit the sport. When asked about it, Schenn didn’t name names but here’s what he said: “I don’t want to get into too many of the details,” Schenn said. “But when I was leaving Anaheim, there were comments. I was asked if I really wanted to go down and actually play in the minors (as opposed to leaving professional hockey) at 29 years old. “I was asked if that was the right decision for me.” How did that make Schenn feel? “Well, the first day I got there, Dallas Eakins told me to come sit down in his office. We talked for 45 minutes straight. “I said, ‘Dallas, I’m going to try to do whatever it takes to help this team win.’ “His words were: ‘It would be great to keep you here all year but you come here and help us win, we’ll do whatever it takes to get you back into the NHL and the right situation.’ “I don’t think too many coaches would say that. He was unbelievable with me. He knew my situation and my family, and the commute I had.” That commute was roughly 90 minutes from Newport Beach, Calif. to San Diego where the Ducks farm team played. “Dallas would give me the odd morning off for rest so I didn’t have to get up at 6 a.m for a morning skate and make that drive. “He did so many little things like that for me,” Schenn said. “I always believed that I could get one more opportunity if I caught the right break. “I never really lost faith. “This whole experience (in Vancouver) has just been crazy.”

To add to those impressive freshman totals, here’s an interesting visualization of Jack’s scoring this season: Kind of blows up the idea that Rathbone was the beneficiary of running shotgun to Fox this season. Jack’s scoring has surprisingly little to do with Fox. One might even go so far as to say that next season, with Fox gone, Rathbone may benefit significantly from the departure, as he could inherit many of the prime scoring roles and minutes Fox feasted off of, and Rathbone could see a significant jump in his numbers for his sophomore season at Harvard.- 3,880 replies

I’d love to see him come back on a cheap one year deal. And I expect he’d be happy to sign. He was on his way to being done in the NHL, and the Canucks have given his career new life. He’s also worked hard on his game and earned it. What has surprised me the most is his escapability in the defensive zone. He’s not a guy who’s known for his mobility, and his skating has limits, but he’s really cagey and seems to cope well with pressure. Does a good job stick handling his way out of pressure, using his body to shield the puck, and make little fakes and turns to shake off a check. I’ve seen him several times recieve a pass with a forechecker closing in, and he makes a shrewd little move to shake them, and the quickly puts an outlet right on the tape of a teammate. The kind of stuff Guddy really struggled with while here and would end up icing the puck or serving up pizzas, but Luke seems to have a knack for getting out of danger, maintaining possession, and then passing the puck to support the breakout. I’ve been pleasantly surprised. The physical stuff I expected. Maybe not the 10+ hits a night. But I knew he was tough as nails and would keep opponents honest. Also knew he had a pretty decent first pass and surprisingly good exits. But didn’t expect him to be so calm when hurried and to make these kind of savvy plays from inside the D zone and under pressure.

Loved reading these quotes from players in the Athletties (the stuff the Canucks guys say about Hughes is also pretty great) https://theathletic.com/893682/2019/03/29/the-athletties-hughesday-shatters-expectations-schenns-redemption-the-save-and-why-the-canucks-season-fell-to-pieces/ Best Compliment “Seeing Schenn step up was awesome,” Boeser said. “If anyone touches Quinn or Petey, he’s in there. He’s making sure and he’s telling guys not to touch them. “It’s nice to see.” SCHENN: “You don’t want to get pushed around ever. If there’s a late hit, I want to be there to have my teammates back.”

Also named 2nd star tonight. EDIT: and Biech has the numbers wrong. Per OHL, DiPietro is 3-0-0 with a 2.0 GAA and 0.912 Sv% in these playoffs.

Lol, JPat’s technical know-how is at my level. The old phone video of cam video transfer method. Classic.

This is actually a very good sign. The fact there’s any delay means that he’s seriously considering the option of going pro, as otherwise he’d basically have nothing to decide and would commit to his senior year. Also bodes well, in terms of Lockwood’s loyalty to the Canucks, because again, if he was planning to hold out for free agency, he’d have nothing to decide right now and would have already committed to playing out his senior year.

Disappointed it not really surprised by Brassard not getting a contract. I would’ve rolled the dice on him, and you just need to read through my posts in this thread to understand why. That said, he didn’t improve his skating quite as much as I’d have liked. He made progress, but nothing dramatic. Also, he didn’t quite reach a point per game, which is where I targeted him. There are reasons for this, most notably his injury history, and some usage in Oshawa this year, but I think the numbers were slightly underwhelming for an overager. Also, the Canucks are rumoured to be in on two NCAA players, so contract slots play a factor. Personally, I like Brassard more than some of the others who have contracts in our system, so I’d have given him a deal. But realistically, he’s a guy with an outside chance of becoming a third pairing guy who can QB a second unit PP. Not a huge loss. And he was a long shot to reach that potential. Just IMO better odds than others that JB has actually extended deals to. But the Canucks scouts know more than me, so I trust they are making the best calls they can on who they sign and don’t sign.

Honestly, I’m not sure, without going through the CBA a bit, which I don’t have time for today. But I suspect the Dec 1 deadline (to file a contract with Central Registry) might apply for this season. And potentially also waivers, as far a joining the NHL after being in the KHL in the same season (I think that part is in Article 13–like with O’Reilly and the Flames fiasco). In any case, I doubt we see Tryamkin coming mid-season. If he comes back, the arrangement will almost certainly happen during the off season. EDIT: actually, waivers shouldn’t be needed mid-season, with us already holding the rights. EDIT2: and potentially the O’Reilly thing means that Tryamkin could come back this season, after mutually terminating contract, as O’Reilly came back in February after ending his KHL deal. Sorry I can’t be more help.

DiPietro got the start. Currently leading 5-2 in the third.

That’s true. But I think guys have an easier time really focusing in on their individual training when they stay at school. Making the pro jump brings a lot of adjustments and demands, so it’s a little tougher to work a training program, even if they have a similar playing schedule and days off. EDIT: also, the collegiate schedule is maybe 40 games, including tournaments. AHL can be over double that, if you make playoffs. LOL: didn’t see post above. Lays out my edit really well.
-
I dunno. I kinda doubt MT would be scoring that many points, what with him missing over half of each season due to all the suspensions he’d be getting if he wore a Canucks uni.

One assist and 6 SOG for Brassard. Niagara takes game one by a 2-0 score. Goalies were the stars tonight. Niagara needed 52 shots on goal to score twice.

I don’t know. Last I heard, Madden said he was going to make his decision after Northeastern is done playing this season/postseason. I expect he’ll go back for his sophomore year. He still needs to add strength. He can make gains this summer, but I think he needs a full year of training. And it’s easier to get in gym time during the season with a college schedule. It’s just exciting that Madden is already at a point where going pro is a legitimate option to consider. But probably not the best option.

Brassard and Niagara starting playoff series tonight against North Bay. I’m expecting the Ice Dogs roll through this first round matchup. Niagara was the highest scoring OHL team this year. And North Bay has the worst goal differential among all OHL playoff teams. The Battalion can score though, when they have their offence clicking, and they might hang with the Ice Dogs for a game or two, but ultimately I expect Niagara to overpower North Bay. I think the last game these two teams played ended in an 8-3 win for Niagara, and I’m expecting more of the same.

It is a bit like that actually. I saw the RH shot my first few times (and it is RH). But then I tried sort of priming myself to see a LH shot, and then watched the clip again and actually saw it as a LH shot. Something about the camera angle and his windup makes it possible to see both, unless you really watch carefully (then it’s clearly RH). -
Yes, Woo can sign an ATO (amateur try-out) with Utica after the completion of his 2018-19 junior season. His NHL ELC starts next season (2019-20).

The fitness thing I think was an unfortunate case of bad communication. I don’t think Tryamkin knew what to expect from his first NHL camp. He was coming from the KHL where training camp is like a month of two a days, and guys get in shape during camp. In the NHL, you show up in shape. I doubt Tryamkin makes that mistake again. But I think somewhere in the chain of communication between Tryamkin, his agent, and the Canucks, there was a serious breakdown and expectations were not properly conveyed.

Cool story, Rick! Canucks under Benning have given “A” bonuses to the following draft picks: Lind (2nd round) Gadjovich (2nd round) DiPietro (3rd round) Palmu (6th round) Brisebois (3rd round) Gaudette (5th round) Jasek (6th round) Demko (2nd round—and he actually got “A” and “B” bonuses) It’s honestly tougher to think of a Benning pick that didn’t get “A” bonuses on his ELC. Not sure if there even is one? EDIT: Found it. Tryamkin didn’t get any bonuses. No wonder Nik went back to Russia.

Best video I could find to post (some were geo-blocked): Edit: Lol, and looks like they blocked this content sometime after I posted it. Here’s another look (we’ll see how long it takes to shut down this video): -
No points for Madden last game, but Northeastern defeated Maine 2-1 to sweep their best-of-three quarterfinal series and advance to the Hockey East semis. Their opponent will be determined today:
