  1. Has anyone seen a post from @ForzaTikare in the various threads on the Dahlén-Karlsson deal? Would really like to see his take. Both in terms of Dahlén leaving and what kind of player we have in Karlsson. Personally, I haven’t seen enough of Karlsson to comment intelligently on how I’d rate him. Certainly, he looks like a decent prospect, although maybe one of the limited ceiling variety. I’m encouraged by his U20 results. Less so by his recent returns in Allsvenskan. But I’d like to know a bit more about his usage this season before drawing conclusions on one year of Swedish second tier pro, and at age 19. Not particularly worried about how his raw scoring stats match up against Dahlén’s age-for-age in the same league. Clearly Dahlén was “the man” for Timrå, but I don’t think Karlsson featured as prominently in the Karlskrona lineup (would be interested to compare per minute rates, and WOWYs, and how he produced if/when deployed with top linemates in offensive roles, but I doubt those stats are available). Ultimately, if this was a trade forced by the player’s agent, I’m not disappointed swapping Dahlén for a younger prospect. Nor would I expect the greatest return, given Dahlén’s mixed reviews in Utica, and him apparently forcing the trade. Still, I think we may have given up too early. Maybe no choice, if Dahlén was set on leaving the organization, but I question how much he was forced out, versus him forcing the issue one-sidedly. Lots of talk out of Swedish press (since the trade) about the Canucks souring on him pretty early, having issues with his leaving to go back to Sweden last year, and him subsequently not being given chances by the coaching staff in Utica. On the other side, the Canucks claim Dahlén expected too much to be handed to him, didn’t want to earn his way, and ultimately demanded a trade because he felt he deserved an NHL shot (and they didn’t agree). I suspect the reality lies somewhere in the middle, but we’ll probably never know exactly what happened. Being a Canucks fan, I now hope that our new guy (Karlsson) becomes a legit player for us, and Dahlén washes out, never plays meaningful minutes in the NHL, but ends up having a nice career in the SHL. A bit savage of me, I know, but I just don’t really root for guys that leave, especially if they ask to be moved (there are exceptions, of course, but most ex-Canucks are dead to me—just how I roll). I like Dahlén and wish him well, but don’t want to see him rubbing this trade in our faces in a few years.
  2. Goal, 2 assists, 5 SOG, and named 2nd star in Sunday’s game. Now 51 points (11G 40A) in 56 games. 24 points in 21 games, since the trade to Niagara. And 5 points this weekend.
  3. This move will look like genius if Pearson rebounds here. OTOH, he could end up being the next guy we loan to the Marlies.
  4. I’m also a believer in Gaunce’s talent. And I’d like to see him nurtured toward becoming a defensive centre, in the vein of the guys you mentioned. He’s always had really good positioning and the ability to read the play and anticipate the opposition. Part of what made him seem like he sometimes wasn’t engaged enough was the fact that he anticipated so well that he’d get into the right spots without having to cover much distance or move too quickly. His defensive reads and positioning were strong enough that he’d already pretty much be where he needed to be, and would not need to adjust or react much. I do think there was benefit to the experiment of playing him at wing, challenging him to take the body more, battle harder along the boards, and move him feet more. I think he’s added many those elements to his game and overall he plays with more noticeable pace and energy now. But I think at this point, the team that gets the most out of Gaunce will be the one that embraces and nurtured his strengths, allowing him to develop into a true NHL shutdown centreman. I really believe he could thrive in that role.
  5. ESPN getting better with the calls. Didn’t hear Rat Bun this time. More like Rat Bow, which is getting closer to Rathbone. Here’s the scoring play where Jack picks up his assist:
  6. 2 assists tonight. Now 48 points (10G 36A) in 54 games.
  7. Woo with an assist tonight to stay at a point per game on the season. 49 points (11g 38a) in 49 games.
  8. Another 6-3 win for DiPietro. This one not so great for his Sv%, as he only faced 11 shots all game (while Ottawa put 51 shots on goal). One of those games where he’s seeing 3 shots a period through the first 40 minutes, and probably pretty tough to get in any kind of a rhythm and stay sharp. Still, it’s another W for Mikey.
  9. Brassard with the primary assist on tonight’s game winner. Now 46 points (10g 36a) in 53 games.
  10. I think so, but unfortunately JB doesn’t come to CDC and check my posts before he makes a decision.
  11. Thiessen saved 19/22 en route to a 4-3 OT win. That’s his third straight win and moves him back to a winning record on the season at 14-13-3-4.
  12. DiPietro picks up a 6-3 win in his return to OHL action. Saved 28/31, and really couldn’t be faulted for the 3 goals he gave up. One was nice cross ice sauce on the PP for a quick shot short side (and Mikey tracked it well and nearly made the save). Second was an odd man rush where Mikey made the first save but his teammates let him down cleaning up the rebound. And third GA came on a well executed two-on-one.
  13. 2 assists for Brassard tonight. Now 45 points (10g 35a) in 52 games.
  14. I’d say that fits with second half of the bolded sentence. At 26, Stone is only 3 years older than Horvat, with plenty of prime years remaining to fit our timeline. Maybe he’s not a truly “young” player, since he’s already in his prime. But he’s certainly young enough, and would undoubtedly be a core addition. Stone is an elite player and, barring injury, he should have a lot of time left before he really starts to decline. I don’t think that trade happens though, especially if there was an extension in place. I’d expect the ask would be much higher. But I’d be all over it at that price. Stone would be a dream addition for this team. He’s probably #1 on my wish list. Helluva player and I doubt you could find a better RW on the market to play with Horvat.
  15. This is the second or third time I’ve hear Benning say something like this in recent months. I like that he’s not willing to part with high picks. But don’t really like the bolded part. It really shouldn’t matter where the draft is being held. This team is not in a position to be moving picks, unless it’s to improve draft position, or to acquire a young, core piece. Otherwise, we need to keep all our picks, and add more wherever possible. I’m thinking somebody needs to convince JB that Vancouver is hosting the next 5 drafts. Watch him get to work hoarding picks to please the hometown crowd.
  16. If I was a video wiz, I’d edit that Kylo Ren/Vader scene into one where Marky talks to Luongo’s old “C” mask.
  17. Sorry, it’s taken me a while to reply. Been busy and haven’t been on CDC as much lately. Anyway, to answer your question, Jasek is definitely best on the wing. RW at evens and on his off side on the power play as a shooting option (as evidenced by his goal earlier tonight). Centre is probably his 3rd best position. He’s competent playing the middle, but better on the wings. He can really play to his strengths on the wing, with his speed, strong boardwork, “dog on a bone” mentality with puck battles, and a very good shot. He’s also a good playmaker off the wing. At centre, I’ve always found him to play a less natural game, and lose a bit of his effectiveness by overthinking his positioning and playing maybe a tad too conservatively. But in a pinch, he’s still a great option to fill in at centre when a team needs a body. You just get more out of Jasek using him on the wing IMO. Oh, and here’s his goal from earlier:
  18. OMG my kids’ school is canceled! They never cancel the public schools here for snow. And UBC campus is shutdown! Guess everyone is staying home today at my house.
  19. On TSN2 for anybody who wants to watch.
  20. I don’t know how to say this without it sound creepy, so I’m just gonna say it in a really creepy way: I always go for the boyish looking ones. Seriously though, the benefit is that physically “young” prospects still have a category of upside that the “older” guys don’t have. They haven’t yet reached their “man strength,” and this is significant. Judd Bracket talked about it with Madden and how they knew that he had a lot of room to grow physically, and this was seen as a benefit. The other side of the coin is a guy like Evan Bouchard. That kid was already a “man” at 16, and at 19, he looks like he’s 30. Very little room for him to make significant physical gains at this point. Of course, anybody can improve through hard work in the gym, but Bouchard isn’t really going to grow any more or significantly change physically. So there’s less upside. Couple that with his weaknesses in skating and defensive zone play, and a juniors production rate that was based on him playing 30 minutes a game, with everything running through him, and you have a guy who will IMO be lucky if he can convert even 1/4 of his offence to the pros. I’m always a bit leery of “man amongst boys” types of prospects. They tend to look rather ordinary when they move up and become a “man amongst men” (we’re seeing some of this with Gadjovich right now). But a baby faced assassin who’s killing it while being smaller and weaker than most of his peers? I have a lot of time for those kids. Especially if they have a frame that can add a lot of muscle mass. And if they are still basically “boys” developmentally and haven’t yet matured into their “man strength.” So yeah, to close with another creepy statement: I like the skinny, peach fuzz kids.
  21. Agreed with others who think Madden is best served by playing another year at Northeastern. I’m just excited that our 2018 3rd round pick, and a college player to boot, has accelerated so much in his development that he actually has to ponder whether or not he should go pro after his D+1. I mean, was there anybody, and I mean anybody, who on draft day thought there was even the slightest chance this kid might actually be ready in a year?
  22. Maybe give Nate Schmidt a call? Honestly, I have no idea what Schmidt was taking, or even if he was taking anything, but whenever I look at his picture, I’m thinking to myself, I’ll have some of whatever this guy’s having.
  23. Don’t know if someone posted earlier, but tonight’s Michigan vs Michigan State game is available on TSN.ca and TSN Go.
