SID.IS.SID.ME.IS.ME replied to Tenacious's topic in Off-Topic General
I don’t really know. He didn’t play a lot. And the knock on him is that he doesn’t pass, so maybe a tad selfish and needed to be taught some lessons and mature in his play? He’s also a flashy kid, with a bunch of bad hairstyles over the years and some highly visible tattoos, so maybe rubbed some of the old school management types the wrong way? It’s hard to say. Seems to have all the talent in the world and still only 20 years old. EDIT: The above is me looking for negatives. But from everything I’ve read (coming from people smarter than me, at least when it comes to footy), the Ardaiz acquisition is an absolute coup for VWFC. Here’s a video where MDS talks about getting Ardaiz (and some nice highlights spliced in): -

Starting to really get excited about how this team is shaping up. The latest signing of Joaquin Ardaiz has incredible potential. Only a year or two ago, he was considered one of the top teenagers in the world, with some of the truly elite clubs in Europe expressing interest. And the rumours are looking legit that Fredy Montero will be soon announced as returning to VWFC. Also Bryan Ruiz rumoured to be announced soon. But I think the most exciting part is the high pedigree young players that are being added to the squad. This team is suddenly bursting with some serious potential, with several younger players joining the team that should be very exciting to watch. Here’s an article on Ardaiz: https://dailyhive.com/vancouver/whitecaps-fc-sign-joaquin-ardaiz-february-8-2019 Also, Erik Godoy has been confirmed: https://www.eightysixforever.com/2019/2/8/18217659/vancouver-whitecaps-acquire-centre-back-erik-godoy-on-loan I’ve been disappointed before, after getting psyched by new acquisitions heading into the season, but starting to get legitimately excited about this new squad and the start of the MDS era. -
Lockwood’s goal:
-
I think the final is on Monday. EDIT: Yup, 7:30 Monday at the Garden in Boston (so 4:30pm Vancouver time).
-
Big night for Lockwood as Michigan faces rivals Michigan State. Just scored and has two apples as well. Only in the 2nd period. 4-1 Michigan. Hughes also has an assist tonight.
-
Brassard picks up an assist tonight on this goal (he’s #21 and makes the initial pass): Brassard now has 41 points (10G 31A) in 48 games.

Playing with Guddy lately hasn’t helped him either. That’s a really tough spot to be in. The left side of the Gudbranson pairing has really chewed up Canucks Dmen these past seasons. Pouliot seems to struggle under pressure in his own zone, and Gudbranson does very little to help alleviate this, as he shares many of the same issues with decision making, finding the right outlets, and supporting a successful breakout. Unfortunately, Guddy seems to be a defensive minded defenceman who just doesn’t really defend well, and that’s probably not the type of partner that Pouliot needs. Pouliot actually plays decent enough with Stecher, but that’s not necessarily the best use of resources, as Stecher is one of our better top-4 options, and Pouliot shouldn’t ever really play higher than 3rd pairing. Green seemed to be doing the best he could to shelter Pouliot and Gudbranson and limit their minutes, but this was mostly mitigating the damage (with varying success) that pairing inflicts upon the team. Playing them with Petey also helped stop some of the bleeding, as Pettersson does a really good job dropping back and supporting those two, but again, you have to question the use of resources when you have your best player and top offensive threat spending that much time and effort covering for a weak D pairing. Unfortunately, the Edler injury is not making things easier. It does break up Pouliot-Gudbranson, which is probably only a good thing. But it also elevates Guddy into the top-4, and pairs him with a rapidly declining Tanev who is now forced onto his off-side. I don’t mind Pouliot-Biega as a limited action 3rd pairing, if they can be played behind a strong top-4. But right now, we have two pairings in Pouliot-Biega and Tanev-Gudbranson that need sheltering, and it’s debatable whether or not we can accommodate this by riding Hutton-Stecher for 30 minutes a game every night (although those two were studs last game and deserve major credit). Ultimately, we just need better players on D. And I’m not sure how easy that will be to accomplish. Getting Hughes and Juolevi into the lineup should help, in time anyway, but they will need to acclimate and develop, and they only really help shore up the LH side (which, I suppose, at least solves the Pouliot issue). The right side remains a bit of a mess though (outside of Stecher). Tanev seems to be declining faster than anyone could have predicted, seeing a steep decline recently in his underlying numbers (stats that used to be the crown jewel of our defensive group). Guddy, I just don’t know. With the right partner, I suppose he can be useful as a 3rd pairing guy who brings elements to his game that are needed from time to time. But it also seems to be a big sacrifice to carry him when, at least to-date, he seems to tank the performance of every partner he’s given. Sometimes I think we just need to cash out and find a GM who values Gudbranson and will offer good assets for his services. Sure, we’d be a softer team without Guddy. But there must be some other options (and cheaper ones) that can fill our need for a handsome, likeable, occasional face-punching, #6 Dman. Probably also time to cash in Tanev too and get what we can. I suspect we’ve already lost the market with any teams that heavily rely on analytics, but Tanev’s reputation as a first rate defensive Dman should linger a while yet and at least delay some of that value loss. For how long is anyone’s guess. But if current trends continue (and I really hope they don’t), I doubt we get much of anything back for Tanev in a year. At least right now there’s still a chance to recover some decent assets.

2019 NHL Entry Draft in Vancouver, BC
SID.IS.SID.ME.IS.ME replied to Qwags's topic in Prospects / Farm Team
Any Victoria/BCHL viewers able to offer some insights having watched Jérémie Bucheler this season? Seems to tick a lot of boxes for a target in the middle rounds. Good size (6’4”, 200), RHD, and the limited scouting I’ve seen says he skates well, plays with pace, good vision, strong offensive tools, and a good stick defensively. Putting up some solid numbers this season (albeit on a stacked team). He’s a second year draft eligible. Ranked in and around the 100s on some lists. Committed to Northeastern for next season. Watching some old scouting video packs of Bucheler, I can see why he was so highly touted and went #15 overall in the 2016 QMJHL draft. Ended up playing in the USHL for his draft season, and I’m not sure what happened there, but his numbers were pretty unimpressive and he passed through last year undrafted. This season, after moving over the BCHL, he seems to have rebounded and be back on track with his development. Plus, like I mentioned earlier, he’s heading to Northeastern next season. That’s a quality NCAA program and one that has definitely served us quite well lately. -
Yeah, Timrå and Växjö are certainly missing Dahlén and Pettersson. It also doesn’t help that Växjö lost their 3 highest scorers, with Calof and Rosén both heading to the KHL (and Pettersson to the NHL). Timrå, I think, was always going to be in tough this year, as promoted teams generally struggle and find themselves fighting relegation. But there’s no doubt Dahlén would have helped them and is sorely missed.

I plan to drink and dine exclusively at Judd’s restaurants if I’m ever in Cape Cod.

Yeah, I saw that. Was kind of what I was referencing a few posts back when I said that McEneny carried the stigma of being the previous regime’s player. I just think that if the Canucks are looking for injury relief and a replacement player for Edler, McEneny should be the first choice among the currently available non-roster LHDs. Brisebois is more of a guy you’d call-up late in the season, after getting eliminated from playoff contention, to get a look at a prospect. And Sautner, IIRC, isn’t playing right now. Just seems like the perfect time to bring up the guy who Green and Baumer considered their best defenceman when they were coaching the Comets. Green played the hell out of McEneny that last season in Utica, leaning heavily on him at evens and on special teams. McEneny is now healthy, and by all accounts playing very well. He’s gotten back to looking like the same player Green trusted and elevated to his #1D in Utica. So if Edler is going to be out for a while, and the Canucks need injury relief, they could do a lot worse than McEneny. Having a 24-year-old LHD, who measures in at around 6’3”, 220 lbs, skates well, brings a calm, poised demeanour, provides clean, smooth breakouts, offers steady two-way play, can capably QB a power play, and can also play PK, would seem to be a resource worth exploiting right now.
-
Yeah, if he’s truly a “depth” defenceman, then he should be first call-up when we need to draw on our depth due to injuries. Interestingly, McEneny this season is posting nearly identical scoring totals and rates to what Pouliot produced in his most recent year at the AHL level. I do believe that Pouliot brings more flash and has a higher skill level, but McEneny has better size and seems to play a more steady two-way game. I think he deserves a shot at showing whether or not he can translate his abilities to the NHL level.

Yeah, bloodlines and wealth give kids a huge leg up and every opportunity, but sometimes the talent just doesn’t pass down.
-
Nope. I doubt any of the Selanne kids have much of a future. The one at NU has like one point in two seasons. The eldest son has already stopped playing. And the youngest is 18 and playing in a U18 B league in Finland.
-
Yeah, Madden just keeps cranking it up another notch. Amazing to watch this kid. Truly feels like the sky is the limit with him right now.
-
I think the feeling is mutual. Northeastern has been good to us. Hopefully we keep that pipeline flowing in future drafts. Seems like they have some strong scouting/recruiting over there, and picks we’ve made on NU recruits have been gold so far.
-
I tend to think there’s a little bit of the “old regime’s prospect” stigma attached to McEneny (which happens in every organization and is certainly nothing unique to Vancouver or anything new in the world of hockey). JB talks up guys like Sautner and Brisebois (and deservedly so), but tends to be pretty silent about McEneny, unless asked directly. For me, McEneny should be in the discussion with those other two, as potential D call-ups who should get a look this season, especially now that McEneny is getting his legs back and finally healthy and looking to be in true game shape. Even with his injury struggles and recovery, he has been putting up very good production this season, and playing an important role for Utica.

Jack Rathbone | #3 | D
SID.IS.SID.ME.IS.ME replied to Tomato Pajamas's topic in Prospects / Farm Team
Yeah, I think in one of the older versions of the CBA, it was truly “indefinite” and literally meant that NHL rights were held for the lifetime of the defected player. I think some older Russians in the KHL still have their NHL rights held by teams. But under the current CBA, UFA status (age 27) basically ends any team rights.- 3,880 replies

2018-19 Utica Comets Thread
SID.IS.SID.ME.IS.ME replied to stonecoldstevebernier's topic in Prospects / Farm Team
I think Gaunce has about a week left of waivers exemption. Spent something like 22 days on the Canucks roster, and you get 30 days (or 10 games) exemption after clearing waivers. So he’d need to clear waivers again if he used up his remaining exemption. Unless you’re talking about the recall? Those waivers were eliminated and you don’t have to clear waivers to come up to the NHL anymore. Only going down to the AHL. -

Even better with sound and wide shot: Hughes’s shot is definitely improving. That was definitely more of a “blast” than a muffin. Although I suppose you could still call it a muffin. Just a month old muffin somebody left on the counter that’s so hard now you’d chip a tooth.

Michigan vs Minnesota is live right now on TSN.ca and TSN Go. It’s free in the “bonus” section of the live broadcasts.

So if Northeastern (vs BU) and Harvard (vs BC) both win their semis on Monday, we’ll have Madden vs Rathbone for the Beanpot. https://www.beanpothockey.com/

They certainly don’t do him any favours, in terms of his stat line, but it’s also the league. The USHL only has one goaltender with a GAA under 2.0 and only two goalies under 2.50. Thiessen, at 2.95, is actually 12th in the league. Same goes for Sv%, where only 8 goaltenders league-wide have better than a 0.900 Sv%. Thiessen ranks 14th in that category, with a 0.895. So while his numbers don’t exactly jump off the page, he’s actually doing pretty well for a rookie goalie in the USHL. Thiessen is very long term anyway. We’re still 3-4 years away from even looking at a decision on whether or not he gets a contract. He has this year, plus another 4 years of college, before our draft rights run out.
