It would be really odd for Hughes to go pro now. He’d have to choose to bail on his teammates mid-season at Michigan, and I really doubt he’s the type to do that. It’s true that Michigan has struggled this season, at least compared to expectations, and in terms of their W/L record, but they have also been pretty unlucky. Their goalies couldn’t make saves early into the season, and the team as a whole needed to tighten up their defensive structure. The forwards have also struggled mightily to convert on numerous scoring chances. But underneath all that, they have actually dominated most of their games on the shot clock and posted some strong underlying numbers. So they probably deserve a few more wins than they have. And those things tend to even out over a season. They’re not even half way through their season. And in conference play, Michigan is only 1 point out of second in the Big Ten (and IIRC 5 points out of first place in their conference). They still have, I believe, 14 games left to play, most of them within the conference, before this season is done (including four games versus conference leaders Ohio State). So they’re far from being out of contention. A strong run of play to close out the season, and maybe winning 3 of the 4 games against Ohio State, and the Michigan Wolverines could easily find themselves atop the Big Ten, and back among the leaders in the national rankings. And even if they don’t make up any ground in the standings and rankings, they’ll still play in the Big Ten tournament, and if they win there, they move on the the NCAA national tournament. I can’t see Quinn Hughes deciding to pull the plug now on his college career. Michigan is far from eliminated, and actually has several possible paths available to them to the Frozen Four.

Yup. Hodgson still has the 2nd best single tournament points per game ever posted by a Canadian at the WJC. He’s just behind Gretzky for that honour. And Jordan Schroeder still has the most points all-time for an American player at the WJC. The WJC is fun and all, but it’s not always the best measuring stick for future success in the pros.

Michigan wins 4-2. Lockwood with 1 goal, 6 SOG, and a +2. Here’s his goal:

Easy to notice the Quinn Hughes (or lack there of) effect watching Michigan today. When Q is playing for the Wolverines, he’s on-ice for around half the game and he’s creating massive amounts of controlled exits and entries. Without Hughes, there’s so much chip and chase. It’s working for them today, but such a different look, compared to what you usually see with Hughes controlling the play.
-
Wolverines really taking it to the Irish. 3-0 Michigan and only halfway through the 1st. Lockwood has one of the goals.

Teams just taking the ice. Michigan vs Notre Dame. Outdoor game. Live from South Bend. Best video access is via TSN GO. Or go to TSN.ca and log-in with your TV provider. The NBC stream is buggy for me but the TSN stream is crystal clear (so far). Lockwood 2RW:

Gunnarsson did something! I can not begin to describe the level of excitement I feel whenever this thread gets bumped. It’s really like Christmas morning whenever he scores a point.

Lockwood and Michigan play their outdoor game today, versus Notre Dame. I believe it will be broadcast on one of the TSN channels and/or on TSN Go. Also on NBC Sports. Taking the kids to their friend’s birthday party (Grr... what kind of parents pick a weekend early morning time for a kid’s birthday! Yeesh), but will try to post better game links later.

Well, I think technically he could be signed and then play in Utica, since he’s not in major junior and under the terms of the NHL-CHL agreement. But he’s only 18 and he’s committed to Maine (NCAA) for next season, so he’d have to sacrifice his college eligibility. It won’t happen. While it’s possible, as far as the actual rules go, Thiessen is a long term prospect and several years away from going pro. I’d say 2021 or 2022 at the earliest. He’s going to play out this season in the USHL, and then need a minimum of 2 years in college.

Both of them work. I got the drift from the original still of Bart just staring at the door (kinda like waiting he’s waiting for a Rathbone post in the Rathbone thread). By the way, I believe Jack plays tomorrow. Harvard vs RPI.- 3,880 replies

2018-19 Utica Comets Thread
SID.IS.SID.ME.IS.ME replied to stonecoldstevebernier's topic in Prospects / Farm Team
Maybe the PTO ran out? I think when the PTO ends, the player must either be signed to a full AHL SPC, or they are released, at which point they are free to sign another PTO. -

Regular season ends Feb 22. Playoffs start Feb 25. Gagarin Cup Final should be April 25. Avto is first in KHL East and one point back of first overall in league.
-
Thiessen has been solid lately. In his last 10 games played, he has a 0.922 Sv% and has only allowed 19 goals against.
-
Yeah, saw that. Thanks. At least Oshawa and Niagara don’t play each other during the freeze. Although I suppose they could just sit the players out if they had a game scheduled for before the trade goes through. It’s probably weird enough for Brassard to play games for Oshawa when he knows he’s being moved, never mind actually having to try to beat his future team.
-
Yup, now we have two benchmarks for prospects to improve their skills: (1) Bo Horvat’s skating and (2) Elias Pettersson’s shot. No pressure, guys, but Canucks fans will be expecting all of you to match these levels of improvement.
-
So Brassard still in Oshawa and playing for the Gens tonight, so looks like the trade rumours he was headed to Niagara were premature, at least for now. EDIT: One assist tonight. 22 points (6G 16A) in 30 games on the season.
-
Yeah, he’ll make the Pettersson adjustment. EP talks a fair bit about how in the NHL, he has to go with his first thought on plays, because if he thinks twice or three times, he runs out of time and the options disappear. Right now, Q is able to look at the ice and decide between a bunch of options, all of which will likely work for him. As he moves up, he’ll need to limit those options, commit to his first instinct, and trust in his ability to make that first play work.
-
Nah, no reason to root against Scott at this point. After Hunter’s postgame comments, it’s clear DiPietro is the starter and Canada will ride him through the tournament (unless he gets hurt, or loses the net through some truly poor play). Honestly, DiPietro couldn’t have gotten a stronger endorsement. “Mikey is our guy” and “it’s not an evaluation anymore” pretty much tells you that Scott can pitch a shutout next game, and it doesn’t matter—he’s the backup and Mikey is the #1.
-
Yeah, should be good. Ice Dogs are loaded up front, but they could really use a guy like Brassard on their back end. Hopefully he’ll play first pairing and 1PP. Could see him piling up points. Studnicka is also a really good addition. Always appreciate his game when I watch the Gens. Ice Dogs are getting a couple top quality pieces, who should provide a significant boost their already potent offence, while also bringing a ton of veteran leadership. Should be fun to watch Ottawa and Niagara battle it out in OHL East, especially with DiPietro and Brassard joining each of those respective teams.

After passing through waivers, players acquire a waiver exemption for 10 games or 30 days on the roster, whichever comes first. After they hit 10 games/30 days, the exemption is used up, they need to clear waivers again before they can be re-assigned to the AHL. I believe Gaunce was on the roster for 22 days already this season, and played in 3 games. So he’d probably have a week left of exemption, and then would become subject to waivers again.
