  1. Have to say, I always enjoy seeing a defenseman with shootout skills.
  2. Finally some video on Jašek’s latest goal: Now that google translation from the game report makes sense. Jašek, the “young assailant” most definitely “broke his opponents” and “the fox” clearly “hit the gap between his concretes.”
  3. Just re: Heiskanen vs Juolevi, worth noting that Heiskanen is playing 25 minutes a game for HIFK and has been their #1D all season. Juolevi is averaging 18 minutes this season with TPS, and while he’s arguably their most talented D, he’s not considered their #1 and usually plays somewhat sheltered on the second pairing. Based on the larger sample of the Liiga season (versus the WJC), the choice is pretty clear. Not to mention Heiskanen being considered the higher upside/pedigree prospect. None of this is meant as criticism of Juolevi. He’s been great and he’s developing really well. I’d certainly support the idea that he’s good enough to make the Finnish team. But I wouldn’t put him ahead of Heiskanen.
  4. Looks like from now on the Gens are going to tweet out the meme-worthy Brassard smirk whenever he scores. And I very much approve.
  5. Brassard with yet another goal tonight (and he also pumped 8 shots on goal). Not bad for a kid who took 25 games (and 82 shots on goal) to finally break the goose egg and tally his first goal this season. They’ve come a lot quicker since. Now up to 30 points (11G 19A) in 45 OHL games. Good for 11th place in scoring among OHL defensemen. Also tied for 3rd among all OHL Ds for shots on goal (148). And his 11 goals has him tied for 6th among defensemen.
  6. 21 points in Brassard’s last 20 games! Now 12th in the OHL In defenseman scoring.
  7. Man, you gotta love Google translate. Here’s a description of Jašek’s goal today: “The young assailant broke his opponents.” “The fox hit the gap between his concretes.” Sounds like quite a game! Here’s the full translation of the 7-0 game report. Also, here’s another awful translation of an article on Jašek. Reading between the lines, the article (linked above) talks about how Jašek is happy to finally see some chances going in, after not really getting the bounces for some time this season. Also mentions his demotion to WSM Liga playing with BNJ (which Google translates as a trip to Venice ), how he benefited from the extra icetime. In particular, he mentions getting the chance to work on the PK, an opportunity not afforded to him in Extraliga. EDIT: don’t know why the fonts are all weird but I’m just gonna leave it how it is
  8. Wowza, missed another big game for Jašek. Afternoon start over there which meant an early morning game and I sleep in on Sundays so missed tuning in. Although I might get up for the next one. 1 goal and 2 assists in Liberec’s 7-0 win over Zlín. So 3 goals and 2 assists in his last 2 games. Seems like that new third line is working out well. Lakatoš (linemate) added 2 goals and an assist. Jašek with assists on both goals (one primary).
  9. He’s 7th in points per game. He’s behind the top-3 guys from Swift Current (Heponiemi, Steenbergen, Gawdin) and Moose Jaw (Burke, Halbgewachs, Howden). Of course those other guys get a lot more help and pad their numbers with a lot more secondary assists than Lind. Not saying those top 6 guys aren’t impressive though.
  10. And all 4 were primary points for Lind (1 goal and 3 primary assists).
  11. I couldn’t watch this game but given the 5-0 score, Stevens (3G 1A) and Sikura (1G 3A) both getting 4 points, and Gaudette having 6 shots on goal, have to imagine Adam could’ve easily had more than just the single assist if he’d had a little better puck luck. Another solid night on the faceoff dot too (10/18 or 56% FOW).
  12. Brassard also scored the shootout winner: Nice moves, especially for a Dman. And the stare and smirk after the goal is pretty great too.
  13. You’re right about the timing of contracts. The vast majority either happen early in the season or they just wait until after its conclusion. However, I have to disagree with you on some of your other points. We know that the Canucks were in ELC discussions with Lind’s camp in October. This was reported by several sources, but I’ll quote Dhaliwal as he seems to be the most trustworthy of the bunch: And while I can’t track down the source right now, I remember reading/hearing that Vancouver hoped to wrap things up before Christmas. Then something happened. And suddenly, the line became “we’ll see how the season goes” and “there’s no rush” and the like. Clearly, the Canucks were interested in getting papers done with Lind in 2017. And, just as a comparison, they made sure that they got Gadjovich inked in 2017, while he was still an age 18 (ELC signing age per CBA), which allows them to maximize club benefit with regards to ELC slide considerations. But Lind, the higher pick, better performer in 2017-18, and probably the better prospect (of course it’s never certain), that’s the guy they don’t sign to a contract, despite having started the process in October. There’s not a tonne of work to figure out the terms on an ELC. Most of the details are already set (either by convention or hard definitions in the CBA) and most of the variables are within a rather small range. Mainly just the particulars of the bonus structure needs to be determined. And the Canucks have generally been fairly generous on bonuses, so I doubt that was much of a holdup. Of course it takes time, but once they started talks in late October, it should have been easy to finish before Christmas if both parties were truly interested in getting a deal done in 2017. Given the particulars, I think it’s fair to question why the deal wasn’t done last year. And even people who haven’t ever signed an NHL ELC can probably offer intelligent observations on the reasoning. Did the Canucks get cold feet? I find it extremely unlikely that anything about Lind’s 2017-18 season (which has very much exceeded expectations) would make them rethink or delay signing him. If they wanted him inked to a deal in October, it’s a fair bet that they still wanted him signed in November and December. Seems more likely that something happened on the player’s side. So why wouldn't Lind sign? I don’t think you need to be a former NHL player to have a valid opinion on this. And I’ve already stated in several previous posts the reasons why I think Lind’s camp would choose to reject a 2017 contract (which very much appears to have been on offer from the Canucks) and push for a more a more favourable signing date (where ELC slide was eliminated).
  14. Jeremy Davis (Canucks Army) with an “I was wrong” article on his initial dismissal of MacEwen as a bad signing. https://canucksarmy.com/2018/01/19/zack-macewen-is-better-than-i-thought-he-would-be/ Say what you will about CA, but they have been pretty good in recent years for admitting their mistakes and acknowledging the times when Benning and the scouts’ eye tests have trumped analytics.
  15. Feels weird not to be posting highlights tonight. Gaudette played a game. So where are the snipes? Adam and Northeastern were shut out 3-0 by UMass Amherst. Gaudette had 5 shots on goal and went 15/21 on the dot in the loss. The weekend series goes back to Matthews Arena tomorrow, so Adam and the boys will get a chance to settle the score.
  16. Timrå was selling these tshirts even before Dahlén made his statement: Have to imagine they’re gonna sell a whole bunch more now.
  17. Nice to finally see it in black and white and straight from the horse’s mouth. I’ve posted a fair amount of rumour and speculation that’s been consistent with this, so it’s good to finally get confirmation that Dahlén is indeed sticking around with Timrå and that his motivations and loyalty are what I expected them to be. Really don’t mean this as an “I told you so” post, if it sounds that way. More just that I’m happy this kid appears to be who I thought he was.
  18. Kubát (28 yellow) certainly had the opportunity to make him take his lumps there if he’d chosen to lower the shoulder as Jašek came past. But that would’ve been after the goal. As far as Jašek actually scoring there, it’s true that many NHL Ds (and goalies) would’ve done better, but plenty of them would have still been beaten by Jašek’s speed and either given up that scoring chance or been forced to take a penalty to stop it. I don’t think it’s a bad move. But Jašek will need to expect he might pay the price if he cuts in like that against NHL players. Hard to tell for sure (from the vid), but it does look like he’s expecting some contact after he scores, which is good because hopefully he’d have protected himself if Kubát had decided to level him.
  19. @-Vintage Canuck-: thanks for posting the highlights. I’ve been at doctor’s appointments all day with the kids (they’re fine), so couldn’t catch the game and was just checking updates. Of course, Jašek scores for the first time in ages (in Extraliga) and then adds a second goal. Perfect game to miss. Thanks kids. Those goal’s a pretty indicative of stuff Jašek has done all season. They just went in this time. He’s sent so many pucks high or wide or beating the goalie and then trickling through the crease and out the other side. But those bursts of speed, going to the net, being in the right place for rebounds, etc, that’s stuff he’s done pretty all year. So he was probably due for some goals. Really nice to see him rewarded with a couple shots actually going in for him. Hopefully he can build on this over the next few games.
  20. Jašek with a goal (PP), 2 SOG, and 1 hit so far. Second period. Has played 9 minutes so far. Nice to see him finally scoring again in Extraliga (as well as having a goal in the recent CHL semis). EDIT: and he scores again! 2 goals now (5 on the season) Finishes with 2 goals (both 5v4 PP), 3 SOG, 1 hit, 12:31 TOI, 3:13 PPTOI.
  21. Jašek playing for Liberec today on the new look third line: Lakatoš-Redenbach-Jašek I like this line. Puts a veteran between the two young NHL drafted players. Hopefully they get decent icetime together and put up some numbers.
  22. Yeah, things have changed quite a bit since Ray’s day. European players are much more comfortable now. Less of a culture and language barrier. And many of them come over much earlier. Also, for Europeans, their NHL city can really become an adopted home away from home, where they move their families over, and often even stick around during the offseason. It seems like quite a few North American players these days maintain primary residences outside of their NHL city, and maybe keep a “work” apartment/condo near the rink, and head out of town to go “home” to their families when they’re not playing. To me, there’s very little difference these days between Euros and NA players in terms of team loyalty and their willingness to be be a mercenary type vs desire to stay in one place. And at least from the Canucks perspective, our most loyal players with the most significant involvement in our local community really seem to be the Europeans.
  23. Juolevi and Palmu are playing today, TPS vs Jukurit, deadlocked at 1-1 late I n the third. Just for fun, here’s Olli’s shot location chart so far: Not his most active game (in terms of total SOG) but the chart still makes me happy because it’s such a good indicator of how much he moves around the zone and his two primary offensive areas, (1) the point/top of the zone and (2) coming off the left halfboards.
  24. Elias continues his stint at centre. Currently playing, Växjö vs Luleå. Streams are slow today but last I checked, Pettersson had 2 SOG, one shot wide, and was 67% on faceoffs after about 15 minutes of the first period.
  25. ^^ That shot probably goes in regardless. Looked like it was labeled for top corner glove side (and there was quite a bit of room there) before it went down off the defender’s stick and into the opposite corner of the net.
