  1. I’d be really surprised if he left Sweden this season. The main question seems to be whether or not he’s willing to even leave Timrå? Plenty of SHL teams want him, and there are rumours of deals already in place (Färjestad in particular), just waiting on Dahlén’s approval. But so far, at least publicly, he seems very focused on helping Timrå win and getting his team to an SHL qualifier.
  2. Pretty impressive considering Borgström is a fairly highly touted first round pick. And Gaudette is only 10 months older. He also pretty much matched those numbers last season (Gaudette was 1.40 points/game last season and Borgström is 1.42 this season).
  3. Good question. Växjö play their next SHL game on the 11th. That’s probably enough time that you’d expect him to be back in the lineup.
  4. Definitely winger. Pretty much every scouting report says he’s better on the wing and I share the same opinion. He’s a better finisher than playmaker. He’s strong for his size, but he’s not a big guy by any means. He’s a decent skater, but not effortless. More of a darter who can be quick in bursts, but doesn’t blow you away with his movement going from end to end. He’s decent defensively, but doesn’t really have a centreman’s grasp of three zone defensive responsibility, and kinda picks his spots rather than providing sustained positional defensive coverage. I mean, can he play centre? Yes, he certainly can. But I don’t think that’s where you get the most value out of him as a player.
  5. I wouldn’t worry about his defense. From what I’ve seen of Jašek, it’s actually a strength of his game. Really well positioned in his own zone, works hard for loose pucks along the wall and in the corners, and pressures puck carriers in three zones. I think his defensive numbers speak more to the team he’s on and the usage he’s seen this year. First off, Liberec aren’t good. They’re like -22 goal differential and 10th place in a 14 team league. Secondly, outside of an early stretch where Jašek was scoring and playing favourable minutes with top line mates, he’s had a lot of games playing checking and energy roles with quite a bit of 5v5 defensive usage and linemates who trend toward the plug variety. He’s also had the misfortune of playing his best hockey, and highest minutes, while the team was struggling early and racking up quite a few losses. Then his icetime got cut as the vets started producing. The combination likely depressed his overall defensive stats. Even still, from the analytics perspective, he’s middle of the pack on shot differentials, which is pretty good considering his season.
  6. Looks like a goal and an assist for Gaudette so far. And feeling just a little buyer’s remorse choosing to watch the Canucks game instead of NU. EDIT: make that 1G 2A and NU leads 3-0
  7. I can’t tell if the current usage is button pushing or message sending or just that the Liberec coaches feel like the other players give them better chances to win. But I’m a bit baffled as to why they’d bother recalling him just to give him 2 minutes of icetime. Seems better to leave him down if they’re not gonna play him. With BNJ (WSM Liga), Jašek would play 20-25 minutes per night, with 4-5 minutes 1st unit PP, and was even seeing 2-3 minutes on the PK (a role he doesn’t ever seem to play in Extraliga but one I believe he might thrive in eventually). I dunno. Might have to translate some Czech articles and see if there’s a method to the current madness.
  8. So yeah, Jašek is back in Extraliga. Played exactly 2:00 on the 4th line and posted zeros across the board. Hopefully he sees more ice next game or gets sent back to WSM Liga.
  9. Looks like there’ll be a free stream for today’s game. Of course it’s on during the Canucks game. But here’s the link to the GoNU portal anyway: https://portal.stretchinternet.com/northeastern/#live I’ll post the direct link for the game later once it’s available. EDIT: this link should work: stream
  10. Just had a quick look at the numbers and I believe that’s his 6th game winner of the season. Timrå has 15 wins over Dahlén’s 26 games played. So since his return, 6/15 or 40% of the team’s game winning goals came off Dahlén’s stick. Timrå has 61 team goals (and that includes shootout winners) in Dahlén’s 26 games played. He’s figured in 30 of them. And, at least based on my quick count, he has 24/30 primary points this season (16G 8A1), which is an 80% PPP (primary points percentage).
  11. Andersson (6G 1A), Pettersson (5G 2A), and Nylander (1G 6A) each have 7 points through the tourney so far. Andersson is the leading goal scorer for the Swedes with 6 goals to Pettersson’s 5. Nylander, well... he’s a Buffalo pick. Do you mean snub? Or snuff? And if snuff, wouldn’t it actually be snus?
  12. You make a great point. In the first few games, he was quite conservative in his play. Stayed high in the offensive zone and played quite low and central defensively. But after a few games, he started to ramp things up. Almost like he needed those first few games to really understand his teammates and be able to predict where they’d be and when he’d have cover to take chances and be more aggressive.
  13. I think he’s still out with the knee injury. Was just looking through the team Twitter (@DXSF_BHockey) and it seems one of his teammates is still acting as the interim captain (Jack usually wears the “C”) so that suggests he isn’t playing.
  14. Looking like Dahlén to Färjestad (SHL) might happen soon. Nothing definitive yet but several Swedish tweets suggesting it’s very close. Rumours are that the teams have worked out a deal and are waiting for Dahlén to approve the move. For his part, Dahlén has said that he remains focused on Timrå right now. Hockeysverige article (translated): link Rumour is Färjestad would send Fabian Zetterlund and Olle Eriksson Ek to Timrå.
  15. Definitely. He’s been scoring around a point per game for a good while now (16 points in last 17 GP). Seems like of late, whenever he goes scoreless for game or two and looks like his hot streak is gonna end, he follows it up with another multipoint game and gets back on a run. And still firing pucks at high volume. 119 shots on goal for the season. Good for 4th among all OHL Ds. Probably deserves a few more goals than the 6 he has so far. Hopefully that evens itself out over the remainder of the season. Really an excellent 7th round pick. Was considered one of the top draft re-entries in 2017. Was used pretty sparingly during his first season and a half and then had a bit of an offensive explosion when he started playing more minutes, especially after he was traded. This season, he had a pretty frustrating start. Was playing well but not getting any results. But seems to have just kept at it and he eventually started getting some bounces and hasn’t really looked back since. 40-50 points on the season seems within his reach now, which would be a nice result. He’s not a pure offensive defenseman by any means so he’s not expected to put up massive totals. More of a two-way D with good size (6’2”, 200ish), pretty decent mobility, and a heavy shot. Plays a fairly rugged game and uses his size well. Has made some highlight worthy open ice hits and crunches guys against the boards. Plays physical in his own zone and can make life difficult on his checks. Basically a good all situations defender who can log big minutes and play solid thorough three zones. He’s starting to creep up into the top-20 scoring ranks for OHL Ds this season (17th currently), and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him make it to the 10-15 range, or maybe even break into the top-10 if he keeps up his current scoring rate. He’s not a dynamic, offensive minded D with high level vision/creativity, but he does have some good offensive upside, a nice set of overall tools, heavy shot, moves the puck well, and can capably QB a powerplay. I see him returning for to the OHL for an OA year next season and then hopefully do enough between now and then to get signed in 2019 and move on to the AHL for some seasoning. Right now, he looks like a good bet for eventually providing some solid depth with the upside of possibly playing a 4-6 D role in the future Canucks lineup. Anything along those lines would be a big time “hit” for a 188th overall pick.
  16. As a general point, I agree that he needs to be a bit more assertive at times and show more frequent willingness to engage physically. Although I do feel he is making significant progress in that area. There was that one shift where he had a really good battle going with a US forward (I believe it was Kieffer Bellows). Delivered a hard check and continued to press the guy into the glass and joust with him as they skated around the zone. Had to do a bit of a double take on the jersey number because I didn’t expect that kind of aggressive Dzone play from #7. There are also times where he looks disengaged but he’s actually playing great positional D and anticipating the run of the play at a very high level. You see him nullifying one opponent by slipping between them and the play and then making a quick switch to pressure a second opponent, effectively holding two guys in check while not even putting his body or stick on either of them. Can look passive but it’s actually highly active defending, just very cerebral versus physical. There were a few times when Finland made easy zone exits and had numbers through the neutral zone, and this all started when Juolevi had angled one US forward low, pressured the next guy, and directed that guy’s movements to effectively take him out of the play and gain position. He basically was “herding” two US forwards without them even realizing he was pulling their strings. Kind of a Jedi mindtricks style of defending. Noticed it a couple times when he was behind his net and dealing with two attacking players and he basically eliminated the threat without making actual contact with either of them. He seems hyper aware not to overcommit to individual man-on-man situations when he sees danger developing away from him. He’s watching several guys at once and making very quick decisions as to where he needs to be positioned. Can look like he’s playing passive but often it’s not the case. Kind of a similar style to what Gaunce does sometimes (albeit F vs D) when he looks like he’s not doing much but he’s actually doing a quite a lot just through positioning and anticipating where the puck and players are going next (versus just reacting to where they are right now). However, like Gaunce, he needs to learn not to play the cerebral game too much but also learn to pick his spots and commit to physical play when the situation dictates or when there’s an opportunity to aggressively take a guy out of the play without also removing himself in the process. It’s a fine line and probably a tougher adjustment for “smart” players than the more instinctive types. But Juolevi seems to be making progress and is definitely more physical now than he’s ever been in his career. Plus he has the body now to be pretty effective physically when he chooses to.
  17. Yeah, he tries that shot with some regularity and has actually scored a few goals from similar angles. And even if he doesn’t score, the goalies often have trouble controlling it and the puck ends up rattling around in the crease for a guy like Stevens to jam in. I can see Gaudette and Gadjovich enjoying similar chemistry in our future lineup to what you see in the current NU PP setup (with Stevens net front and Gaudette firing pucks from the left side). Easy to imagine Gadjovich finishing off those same kinds of plays.
  18. Darryl Keeping’s (Canucks Army) postgame report highlights just how efficient Juolevi was in moving the puck yesterday: EDIT: there are some format issues below that the editor won’t allow me to correct. The comments after the chart are mine, and shouldn’t have gotten moved inside the quote (don’t know why this happened, but the editor will not allow me to fix it and just erases everything when I try).
  19. Yeah, his PIM totals (he has the most penalty minutes in the KHL) are inflated by a few match penalties. I believe 75 of those 107 minutes were from the 2 abuse of officials infractions (both were 5+20) and also a tripping major (slew foot IIRC) and game misconduct. On the other hand, he is tied for third in the KHL with 98 hits. And several of his minor penalties have been from the more agressive and physical type of infractions (roughing, boarding, etc).
  20. 1 assist, 4 shots on goal, 12/18 faceoffs for Gaudette in NU’s 3-1 victory. He now has 25 points (12G 13A) in 18 NCAA games this season. Here’s the assist:

  22. Yeah, and he would’ve had the hat trick if that Swiss player hadn’t have scored the own goal off Pettersson’s setup. Andersson played great. Deserved the PotG nod. Dominik Egli for the Swiss. And Joona Koppanen gets the honours for Finland. Alex Tamasi for Slovakia.
