“How you like me now?” -Olli Juolevi
-
Yeah, he’s playing really well so far. Finns should be looking to get Olli out there as much as they can right now. Definitely the best Finnish Dman on exits, through the neutral zone, and supporting entries. Cleanest passes by far. And their PP, which is having some issues, has looked the most dangerous when OJ is at the point.

Yeah, 20-30 is about where I rank him as well. Hopefully the other teams don’t end up liking him as much as we do. Hållander is just so versatile and really seems to do everything well. Maybe not an elite talent in any one particular area but just seems to have a broad skill set where he’s kind of just really good at everything. I can’t see any significant weaknesses in his game. The only real criticism I’ve seen in the scouting reports is that he used to get labeled as “undersized.” But he seems to have grown around 5cm the past year or so and is now listed 185cm (6’1”) and around 85kg (187lbs), which is pretty good size for a 17-year-old. And he seems to still be growing. Looks even taller now (to my eyes) than he did earlier in the season. So he might very well end up being well above average size by the time he finishes growing and filling out. -

I’m a big fan of Hållander and would love to see us take him in the second round. That’s if he’s still on the board when we make our second pick. I could actually see him being gone before the end of the 1st round. Watched him a fair amount with Timrå this season (while following Dahlén) and he’s been very impressive. He reminds me a bit of Richard Rakell, and can see similar upside for Hållander. Also like the fact he’s a W/C (like Rakell) and could see him eventually playing either position (although he’s mostly playing wing right now). -
Gaudette and the NU Huskies are back in action after the Christmas break with a game tonight versus the AIC Yellow Jackets. Game starts 7pm EST (4pm in Vancouver). Looks like this one will be available for free streaming via the GoNU portal: https://portal.stretchinternet.com/northeastern/#live Also, here’s some stuff on Gaudette from today’s game program:
-
Lind now 5th in the WHL in points per game (1.74). He’s trailing only the Big Three from Swift Current (and their just insane scoring rate) and overager points machine Brayden Burke.

No question, if it’s a choice between 5 minutes on the 4th line in Extraliga or 20-25 minutes as the “star player” in WSM Liga, I’m choosing the latter.
-
Brassard is working on a two point game tonight (2A) with a period still left to play. EDIT: actually, one of his 2nd assists got converted to a “3rd assist” on the scoresheet. That would bring him to 13 points (unless he adds more) in his last 12 games. EDIT: make that 12 points in 12 GP Should he maintain this level of production, he could actually flirt with a 50 point season. I still say a 40 point season would be a great result, given the rough start he had. But his game definitely seems to be tracking well now and he’s starting to really enjoy some results on the scoresheet. Great to see.

Jašek back down playing in WSM Liga with HC BNJ. Logged 22+ minutes (team high) as 1RW (and he also played some C). Picked up an assist in a 4-3 loss. He now has 4 points (1G 3A) through 3 games at the WSM Liga level this season.

Yeah, agreed that it didn’t look good. I’d be pretty gutted for Lockwood if indeed he ends up missing the tourney (and potentially part or all of his college season) with a serious injury. EDIT: just didn’t like the sensationalism aspect of all the tweets sounding like the kid was at death’s door or something (but I suppose that’s Twitter for you).
-
Twitter making such a big deal about Lockwood getting “carted off” to the dressing room. Not saying it isn’t a serious injury, but clearly he would have walked to the room in any standard hockey rink. It’s not like he needed to be stretchered off. Just a fair distance to the dressing rooms at the outdoor venue so they put him on the John Deere rather than have the poor kid make the lengthy hike out while in obvious pain.
-
That speed and those hands, plus his pest factor and hitting. Can really see this kid becoming a fan favourite as a third liner and PKer for the big club one day.
-
-
Glad he didn’t score cuz, y’know... nationalism but man that would’ve been a nice goal if Lockwood had’ve beat the post on that 1-on-3 rush.

What do you want as the Canucks alternate/third jersey?

Looks like the Black Skate is the most popular. I voted the same. Brings back great memories and has held up well with time. Only issue: would Versace sue for trademark infringement? -
What’s happening to this world? Canucks Army pens an extremely positive article on Boeser (don’t let the title fool you): https://canucksarmy.com/2017/12/27/why-is-brock-boeser-not-a-superstar/ And their comments section has people telling them they’re too optimistic. Bizarro world? April fools? Nah, just the magic of the Flow.

Jašek played today for Liberec (Extraliga). Another five minute outing. Managed a couple shots, a hit, a faceoff win, and a holding penalty. Hopefully he starts playing a little more the next few games. Otherwise, maybe he’s actually better served playing WSM Liga (Czech 2nd tier). Last game down with HC Benatky nad Jizerou, he played over 25 minutes and had 1G 2A.
-
Yup. Lockwood introduced the Danes to North American style hockey. And then the refs introduced Will to the IIHF rulebook.

Kind of unfortunate if that poster is actually staying away. Not like what they said was all that unreasonable at the time. I’d imagine even Pettersson himself didn’t expect to be doing nearly this well (this soon anyway).

Yeah, I think part of the reason is the draft and how it’s far easier IMO to identify top line forwards than defensemen at age 18 (especially when it comes to stats-based approaches). And also the fact that there are simply more forwards in the pool than defensemen. But it’s definitely tougher to acquire good young Ds than Fs, at least when you’re talking top of the lineup players. -
That’s actually a pretty generous bonus structure. Quite often the goals category bonuses get split up and you get portions of that $212,500 (the maximum total schedule A bonus amount for goalscoring) when you hit graduated targets (like maybe 100K for 20 and a further 112.5K for 30). Can’t award more than $212,500 schedule A bonus for any individual category (goals, points, etc). Nice to see the Canucks choose to reward Brock on his ELC with a target they likely expected he would reach. Although at this point, the 30 and 40 goal targets look pretty attainable for Boeser, so he was gonna cash a fat cheque regardless of the contract terms.

Yeah, obviously I’m rooting for him (as evidenced by my activity in this thread). I think he has NHL upside. Not showing it much at the moment but there’ve been good glimpses at times this season of the player he could be. Good motor, high effort, active in three zones, great skater, strong positionally, good battle level, feisty and can be physical at times, pretty decent shot (just really snakebitten of late) and good playmaking, plus the versatility to play 3 forward positions. He hasn’t seen much PK usage but I think eventually that’s an area he’ll add to his game. I see him as a bottom six energy forward who can play in all situations and brings a lot of speed to the ice. Has a good offensive skill set, but probably will need to earn his spot on the strength of his two-way game. He’s still pretty skinny and needs to add muscle to his frame as he develops his “man strength” and matures. Still a very young looking kid for 20 years old. So lots of room to develop physically and get stronger. But he’s had some games this year where he’s been dominant, in terms of his battle level for loose pucks, defensive contributions, ability to push the pace, advance then puck in the right direction, and effort to sustain and extend offensive zone possession. Definitely has had moments where he looked like a guy you could imagine playing NHL hockey as a valuable contributor on the bottom two lines, and also special teams.

You’re testing my Jašek fandom. If memory serves, his Liberec deal runs through 2018-19, with the contact expiring just before the Canucks’ draft rights. I’d be surprised to see him signed, even to an AHL only deal, before 2019. Of course there’s a chance, but I’d assume the plan is to leave him in Extraliga another year and then make an assessment as to whether or not we move forward with him as a part of the organization.
