  1. I’ll even be happy with the current 19 before Christmas. But he’ll definitely earn his milk and cookies if he hits 20+ before the break. EDIT: Or should I say milk and cookies for Santa Brock and carrots for Brendan “Rudolph” Gaunce. Happy Holidays everybody!
  2. Hoping Santa Brock puts 20 goals in our Christmas stockings tonight.
  3. Yup. New Era Field (capacity 71,870) on the 29th. And last I heard, they’re expecting to sell out. Really smart move by the organizers to make the most of the marquee Canada-USA matchup. I read that the gate from just that single game will be higher than 1/2 the tournament total attendance from some of the recent years hosted in Europe.
  4. Agreed with all. I love the angle on the clip. I hadn’t seen that particular view of the goal until this morning. Might have been played in the broadcast (but I usually have my five year old twins hanging off of me when I’m watching games so I miss things sometimes). Really helps you appreciate just how special a player Brock is. His patience and scoring instincts are just elite among the elite players of this league. Just like the goal last game, where most players would just bang at the loose puck on the scramble, Brock pulls it to the backhand, finds the angle, and roofs it.
  5. Just a little bit of erBROCKtica from the Habs game. NSFW
  6. A tale of two leagues (and their official websites). The SHL runs an article on Pettersson being “the next Canucks Swedish superstar” when he joins the NHL ranks. Meanwhile, the NHL runs an article on the top-10 drafted players to watch at the WJC. And they somehow omit Pettersson from the list. Don’t worry Canucks fans. Twitter has letting NHL.com hear about just how glaring an omission they made.
  7. Jašek back up with Liberec in Extraliga. Not much to report from his last game as he played under 5 minutes on the 4th line (technically was listed as the 3C) and didn’t score. Went 67% on faceoffs. Main thing is he’s back in the top league, hopefully to stay. He can start working on earning back his minutes.
  8. Dahlén with the lone goal today in a 3-1 loss. Now up to 27 points (13G 14A) in 22 games.
  9. Yeah, don’t see that being much of an issue for those guys. Plenty of size and physicality on that potential future line (Gadjovich-Gaudette-RW). And while fighting isn’t the end all and be all, it’s encouraging to know we have some talented forwards in the pipeline who are also quite willing to drop the gloves when necessary. Gadjovich doesn’t scrap as much anymore but he built a pretty strong rep with his fists early in his OHL career. Put a couple guys on the mat and won his fair share of spirited tussles. Gaudette doesn’t fight because of NCAA rules. But he showed himself a willing combatant as a teenager in Cedar Rapids and I’d expect he’ll be quite willing to defend himself (and teammates) when he goes pro. You can add Lind to the list as well. He’s held his own whenever he’s dropped the gloves and he’s going to fill out and get stronger (and hopefully learn a little fight defense—he can chuck ‘em well enough but he really leaves himself open to shots). And I even wouldn’t be surprised to see Lockwood get in a few tussles once he goes pro and is free from NCAA rules (especially given his feistiness, hitting, and general shift disturbing tendencies). Plus there’s Virtanen, who I expect to become a significant physical presence once he fully settles in and gains confidence, consistency, and plays more minutes. And guys like Horvat and Boeser, who might not be the most physical players, but certainly don’t back down or get intimidated. Shaping up to have a fair measure of team toughness on the forward lines of this team’s future roster.
  10. Lind did say that he was going to use Sam Steel’s WHL Player of the Year (Four Broncos Memorial Trophy) 2016-17 season as inspiration for how to respond to a TC cut. Would be pretty cool if he kept rolling with multipoint games and managed to finish the 2017-18 season as one of the top contenders (or even the favourite) for that award. And that kind of production would definitely set him up well in terms of his statistical odds of becoming a top-6 NHL forward. Hopefully JB signs him soon. Lind might still need a development year (or two) in the AHL, so it’s important “asset management” (in terms of ELC slide considerations) to get a deal done before New Year’s. Last I heard, management and Lind’s reps were talking about getting a deal done. So hopefully we hear something over the holidays. Can’t see any reason to wait and miss the window (re: ELC slide eligibility), given the clear benefits of signing him now versus after New Year’s. Same situation applies for Pettersson. Although in Elias’s case, I’d be shocked (but pleasantly so) to see a contract done this year. I’m convinced Pettersson’s camp prefers to delay his contact and thereby take ELC slide off the table.
  11. Another one? Seems like he’s having some issues with the zebras this year. Hopefully he’s not building up a reputation for “abuse of officials” type of behaviour. Then again, hopefully he’s not in the KHL too much longer. So might as well make the most of it (when it comes to giving some grief to the refs).
  12. I really like the idea of playing Gadjovich and Gaudette together. Just not sure who to put on the other wing. I do like the idea of Lind. But I also like Dahlén, playing sort of the Sikura role, on Gaudette’s future Canucks line. I think those two could be dynamite together. Not worried about the LW/RW fit as Gadjovich and Dahlén can each play either side. Could also throw Jake in the mix on a line with Dahlén and Gaudette. Also like the idea of trying Pettersson (if he plays wing) with Gaudette. That could be really fun to watch. And again, the L/R thing isn’t too important with Pettersson dangerous at all three forward positions. Gadjovich in front of the net and playing with Pettersson and Gaudette. Could be deadly. Also could work as 3/5 of a very dangerous PP unit. So many options for those future lines. And likely even more after the next couple drafts.
  13. I think the way he plays, Elias should draw a tonne of penalties in the NHL. Goes straight at guys in the offensive zone. Not a player who’s afraid of some contact. And with his puck skills and slipperiness, he’s basically daring defenders to either grab on/put the lumber to him, or watch helplessly as he goes past/through them and scores. Kid's gonna force a lot of whistles. And then make teams pay on the ensuing PP.
  14. Hopefully something along those lines. USA Hockey put out an updated roster this morning and Lockwood is still on it. https://cdn3.sportngin.com/attachments/document/0141/7414/2018_WJC_Prel_Roster__Numerical_122117.pdf As far as any statements re: the injury, it seems that all they’d tell the reporters who asked this morning (like the guy I quoted earlier) was that they are still evaluating Lockwood and will determine his status soon.
  15. Just a few takeaways from the Swedish article I posted earlier. Really sounds like the Canucks feel Pettersson is ready. Here are some nice quotes from development coach Scott Walker (re-translated into English from the article’s Swedish translations): “When it comes to the question of whether he can play in NHL next year, look what I've seen: doubtless he can do it next year.” “He’s definitely ready for the NHL.” “[Pettersson] may be at least as good as the Sedins” “He is so skilled and he is doing well. The thing is, I know he will not go around and kill people, but he's playing hard. He even plays hard when he has the puck, it's strange, haha. He has a tough control of the puck, he is a brilliant player and is so clever.” “[Pettersson] plays so hard. I do not know if it's about gravity or his balance, but he's strong along the lines and he goes straight into traffic as well. He slides straight from goal, he can fool players.” And finally, some comparisons (from the Google translation) to Connor McDavid and Peter Forsberg:
  16. Glimmer of hope. One of ESPN’s hockey analysts spoke to USA Hockey this morning and reported that as of an hour ago, they were continuing to evaluate Lockwood’s injury before making any decisions. If it was a clear cut thing, I doubt they’d need more evaluation time today to make a status determination. So there’s maybe still a chance he comes back and plays.
  17. If anyone wants to listen, here’s Pettersson’s TSN interview from yesterday: EDIT: bonus content! (1) The full audio from yesterday’s SN650 interview. (2) Google translation of today’s HockeyNews.se article.
  18. Dunno if you mean “they get to Vancouver” or “the ghetto Vancouver”? Meh, they both work.
  19. I haven’t seen an updated weight for a while but he still looks pretty gangly and probably isn’t much more than 175-180 right now. Still baby faced too, which usually suggests a guy has some filling out left to do. He’s listed at 6’1” but seems maybe an inch taller. As far as role, it’s been all over the map. He’s played all three forward positions and on every line from 1-4. Sometimes used in an offensive role and sometimes checking. He brings speed and energy and works hard through three zones most nights. Seems to get a lot of scoring chances when he does play offensive roles but has put too many pucks wide to count. Has gotten a fair amount of PP time over the season but really hasn’t managed to score enough, despite often getting really good looks. I’ve been a little surprised not to see him tried more as on the PK. His positioning is good, he has quick feet, good instincts, and he battles for pucks. Also is pretty good on draws. And could be a shorty threat with his speed. But the lack of PK minutes might just be a trust thing and also the fact that they have some veteran defensive forwards already available in the lineup. I dunno. Obviously this season, just by virtue of his playing decent minutes in Extraliga (until recently) is a progression from last year and previous seasons, where he really never got much of a sniff at that level (outside of a few games where he’d play 5 minutes or so). I’d just hoped that he’d sustain something close to the points he was putting up early on, both in Extraliga and Champions League. But his production has really dried up, and so his opportunities have kinda followed suit. Still some time left this season. And maybe the stint in the lower league will help him get back on track offensively. I think you’re right that he likely fits in as a more defensive forward or energy/effort player if he’s ever going to play for Vancouver. He does have good offensive tools though. But he needs to actually produce (and consistently) at the Extraliga level if he ever wants to show he has enough NHL upside for a contract.
  20. Jašek has been loaned to HC Benatky nad Jizerou of the WSM Liga (2nd tier Czech league). He’s played one game so far. Didn’t score. Much as I’d like to spin this somehow into a positive, it’s just not. Very disappointing. You could kind of see the signs over the past few weeks as he remained mired in a slump and saw he icetime gradually reduced. He’s get the occasional chance to play up in the lineup or get some extra PP time, but the results just never came. After starting the season so strong, he’s struggled to score for weeks now. And with Liberec needing to fight for position, they need goals, and Jašek just wasn’t providing them. OK, even though I said there wasn’t a silver lining, I will try to find one. Recently, Jašek’s teammate Lakatoš (the other young NHL drafted scoring forward) was also demoted to WSM Liga and he was quickly brought back up and today is playing on the first line for Liberec. So there’s the possibility that this is just a slump busting move and trying to shake Jašek out of his funk. Hopefully that’s the case. Because finishing the year in WSM Liga would be a real step back for Jašek, after being one of Liberec’s best scorers during the early part of this Extraliga season.
  21. Crazy that we’re even talking about this. Nothing seems beyond the realm of possibility for Brock right now. Kid has just blown away all expectations. Right now I’m just coming to terms with the fact that he has a legitimate shot of hitting 20 goals before Christmas. If you’d asked me this summer, I actually would have been pretty thrilled with the possibility of a 20 goal rookie season.
  22. I think it’s the old “a punch in the face is better than an icepick in the ear” line of reasoning.
  23. No secret source unfortunately. I think I first came across it on some other forums or blogs and just chatting with people. Mostly speculation. Nobody claiming they’d spoken to the player or agent or management or whatever. Then Uffe Bodin (Hockeysverige) was interviewed saying he thought Dahlén would most likely stick around with Timrå if they remained tops in Allsvenskan and had a chance to qualify for SHL. And in the weeks following, it’s pretty much become the dominant narrative. Also, the earlier SHL rumours (Brynäs etc) seem to have really died down. Whenever Dahlén comes up lately, people are saying they expect him finish out this season with Timrå. So no, I didn’t have dinner with his agent and catch a scoop or anything like that. Just more a case that I’ve heard the same thing over and over from several different people (and now you can add Dhaliwal to that list). Of course, it could just be chatter that tracks back to a single dodgy source, and everyone (including myself) has been repeating and amplifying it.
  24. That’s the wife’s car. Actually we both like using the little Toyota for most trips. Costs peanuts in fuel and can park that itty bitty thing anywhere. But I’ll never give up having the big SUV. Great for summer camping and off roading and while it’s a beast on gas, it just laughs at these snowy days (especially with aggressive tread tires and 4WD).
