  1. It’s a little more complicated but I’ll try to explain. Unfortunately, Wikipedia hasn’t updated the qualification rules and still lists the format from 2014 on some pages. But basically, there are 14 SHL teams and 14 HockeyAllsvenskan teams. The bottom two SHL teams are forced to play in the SHL qualifiers. The top two (regular season) HockeyAllsvenskan teams play in the HockeyAllsvenskan Finals, a best of five series, with the winner advancing to the SHL qualifiers. The Finals winner then plays a best of seven series against the 14th ranked SHL team. The winner of that best of seven series then advances to the next SHL season and the series loser is demoted to HockeyAllsvenskan. The loser from the HockeyAllsvenskan Finals (the best of five series between the top two HockeyAllsvenskan teams) plays a best of three series against the winner of the HockeyAllsvenskan Playoffs (a round robin tournament between the HockeyAllsvenskan teams ranked 3-8). The winning team (of the best of three) then plays a best of seven series against the 13th ranked SHL team. The winner of that series advances to the SHL next season and the loser goes to HockeyAllsvenskan. About as clear as mud?
  2. Wouldn’t that make him better than Cassels? I mean, we all know Pettersson>McDavid, that’s a given. So shutting down Pettersson should mean Jašek>Cassels.
  3. I’ve notice this as well. Not sure of the reasons why. Possibly it’s at least in some part due to the Czech economy being very strong the last few years, so maybe owners are spending more on salaries. Also, the folding of HC Lev Praha probably brought some talent back to Extraliga that might have otherwise remained in the KHL. And KHL “defections” by top Czech players appear to be down in recent years, so the talent pool isn’t getting diluted to the same degree (and less Czech players seem to be heading to other elite European leagues as well). Even seeing something of a reverse talent drain, with some players moving back from the KHL to Extraliga, which again signals the Czech league is getting stronger (and possibly, as mentioned earlier, offers better compensation than before). We’ve also seen better results from the Czech youth programs and this has played out in a higher overall quality of players being produced in that system (as witnessed by better results at the NHL draft and in international competitions). So lots of possible reasons. Not sure which ones are the most significant (or if I’ve missed the key factors entirely), but definitely nice to have a strong Czech league in Europe alongside the other elite leagues (all of which seem to be playing some very good hockey right now).
  4. Get Pettersson and Palmu together for summer training. Palmu can teach Pettersson his leg regimen. And Pettersson can help keep Palmu away from any fishing holes.
  5. Argh! Have to delete. My calendar was wrong and Timrå doesn’t play until Friday.
  6. Jašek with no points in today’s CHL quarterfinal. He played 11:13 and didn’t register a shot on goal (team only had 14 SOG total). 1/1 on faceoffs. I had to miss this game but sounds like a bit of a nail biter. Liberec entered down 0-1 on aggregate. They scored the necessary goal to tie things at 1-1, but needed the shootout to advance to the next round. So it’s going to be Liberec vs Växjö in the semifinals and Pettersson vs Jašek. Also will be the first time 2/4 semifinal teams are from the Czech league (as Trinec eliminated Brynäs to also advance).
  7. Schedule said TSN today but the regular CHL YouTube stream also seems to be working: EDIT: TSN5 is broadcasting the Kometa vs. JYP game and the Zurich vs. Liberec (Jašek) game at 11am. So looks like the above link is best option for Pettersson’s game.
  8. Fully agree. So long as Elias plays for Växjö, SHL games should start at 4am in Sweden. Seems a fair exchange.
  9. Just a reminder to anyone wanting to watch Elias play that tomorrow’s (December 12th) Champions League quarterfinal game 2 (Växjö vs. Bern) will be streaming live on TSN.ca and the TSN Go app. Game starts 9:30am Vancouver time.
  10. I really hope it happens. Just to hear the play-by-play guys attempt the subtle Swedish pronunciation differences between Dahlén and Dahlin. Although they’ll probably just go with first names, like with the twins. Rasmus to Jonathan, back to Rasmus, over to Pettersson. He scores! I could live with that, I suppose.
  11. Those stats are for his Mass Selects (tier 1 midget) games. He’s been playing on a team (Cape Cod Whalers U18) that features the top players from the best prep schools in the area. They play a half season, on top of their games for their respective school teams. He’s also playing highschool games (that season started November 29th IIRC) but unfortunately, his stats for the Dexter Southfield Varsity team aren’t publicly available right now.
  12. From Cory Hergott (who writes “The Bus” Comets reports): “He has gone down to Utica and has done everything asked of him to improve his game. He is a key cog on both special teams, and when he is on the ice five on five, he stays out of the penalty box. Boucher has really picked up his physical game this season and has still only compiled four penalty minutes for the season. I would hate to see the Comets lose Boucher, but I 100% believe that he has earned another chance in the NHL.” https://canucksarmy.com/2017/12/10/canucksarmy-utica-comets-post-game-boucher-picks-up-2-more-goals-comets-fall-4-3-in-overtime/
  13. Wasn’t it more about him not having an NHL level two-way game (and also his skating issues)? I mean, that half season in Jersey two years back he was playing 14+ minutes a night and scoring around 0.5 points a game (19 points in 39 NHL games). He’s never really gotten that kind of opportunity again, so not surprising he never matched those numbers. But it does suggest his offense can translate to the NHL, when he’s playing decent minutes and getting a regular spot in the lineup. Whether or not he’s deserved those chances, due to his deficiencies away from the puck, is another matter. But purely on offense, I think he might very well have NHL grade skills. I’m curious what regular Utica viewers think about his game this season. I haven’t watched enough Comets games to offer an informed opinion as to whether or not he’s still fairly one dimensional or if he’s developed into a more complete player.
  14. There is. I believe standard NHLe for the MHL runs around 0.18. It’s a bit of a flawed stat because there are very few players moving directly from MHL to NHL, and players moving to intermediary leagues (KHL, AHL, SHL, etc) are excluded from these calculations. The so-called “Wilson Method” NHLe attempts to correct for this. By those calculations, the MHL has an NHL points equivalency of 0.31.
  15. They’re not great. Not bad, but nothing to get excited about. 12 points in 14 GP would be quite good for a U18 MHL player, but a player at Zhukenov’s age you’d like to see putting up 1-1.5 points per game to remain relevant as an NHL grade prospect. On the other hand, I’ve always thought of Zhukenov as a younger player, despite him turning 21 next March. He’s one of those kids who every time I’ve seen him, he’s looked several years younger than his actual age, and sometimes they just take a bit longer to mature. Ideally, he’d be playing regularly in the KHL right now (well, I suppose ideally he’d be in the AHL) and at least putting up some modest numbers at that level.
  16. Zhukenov had the lone goal for Omskie Yastreby (MHL) in a 2-1 loss. He now has 12 points (3G 9A) in 14 MHL games.
  17. Game day. Extraliga contest. And pretty much the only action this morning for our European prospects. Bílí Tygři Liberec (11th place) faces HC Olomouc (7th place). Game starts around 10am Vancouver time. Jašek (#40) remains on the 3rd line at LW, alongside C Mário Bližňák and RW Jan Stránský. EDIT: Liberec falls 4-1 Jašek again with no points. He managed 2 SOG and stayed even through 8:33 TOI. His line played only around 5 minutes at even strength, but Jašek was given 2nd unit power play opportunities (he played 3:13 on the man advantage).
  18. I sometimes think the Canucks organization should just throw us diehards a bone and make some of their internal information public. I’m certain they have all the stats for every player on their reserve list (including Rathbone) and get regular game reports and scouting updates. Just pay one junior staffer to compile it all and make it public. Actually, I'd be happy to do it for them for a pretty modest part-time salary and a chance to have access to all their internal player data. EDIT: wait a sec... I’m kinda doing quite a bit of that already around here for free. Dammit! JB you clever fox!
  19. They probably have them here: https://www.ushr.com/neprep/stats Unfortunately, to actually see them you’d have to pay an pretty obscene price for a subscription (minimal plan is $30/month or $149.50 annual). EDIT: yep, here’s Jack’s page: https://www.ushr.com/neprep/team/stats/2017/446?playerId=20635 You can browse everything prior to this season (actually some good game-to-game detail for last season and previous), but need to pay to see his 2017-18 numbers.
  20. Gadjovich scores his 15th goal of the season tonight and has 7 SOG with a couple minutes remaining in the game. EDIT: Finished with the same totals.
  21. Gaudette also named 2nd star tonight. And I’ll let Biecher tally the season stats:
  22. Game over. 5-2 win. Gaudette finishes with 1 goal, 2 assists, 3 points, 3 SOG, 6 attempted shots, 13/26 faceoffs. Just one minor takeaway: we all know about the offense but I found it interesting to see that Gaudette’s number is one of the first called when there’s a 5-on-3, whether his team is up or down 2 men. Says something about how complete his game is.
  23. Well, you did say you tended to be a bit more conservative than me when it comes to projecting prospects.
  24. And might be worth mentioning his D partner Martin Berger. Guy had 5 points in his first 84 Liiga games. Since paired up with Olli, 4 points in 2 GP. Now I’m not saying Olli’s normally gonna boost another player’s scoring rate by 3360%, but I won’t say it’s just coincidence either.
