  1. While I don’t think coaching was the only reason he left, I agree that it’s pretty much undeniable that his relationship with Willie and the staff was the push that put him over the edge toward deciding to return to Russia. Tryamkin is a pretty reserved guy, but he’s made several public comments that both directly and indirectly implicate Desjardins and his assistants. And he was positively effusive (at least for him) in his praise for Travis Green and the new hirings and management’s decision to basically clean house on the coaching staff.
  2. Yeah, I feel like his public comments are more positive than negative, in terms of his chances of returning to Vancouver one day. And the little bits of chatter I pick up through the grapevine give me reason to remain fairly optimistic. On the other hand, his emergence as a legitimate #1D in the KHL, and his elevation to team captain, just add more reasons for him to stay in his homeland (in addition to his family ties and nationalism). As well as the likelihood that Avto (and several other KHL teams) will probably be more than ready to open up the chequebook when his current contract expires. So we’ll have to see.
  3. I think Tryamkin, had he stayed in Vancouver, would have likely played his way into 2nd pairing ES minutes, regular duties with one of the main PK groups, and possibly some 2nd unit PP this season. He’d also have done a lot to alleviate some of the concerns about toughness/physicality and controlling the front of the net, especially in the games when Gudbranson has been out of the lineup.
  4. With today’s performance, Tryamkin enters the top-5 of the KHL’s defenseman scoring race. He’s also 2nd in the KHL in +/- (+18) and 4th overall in hits (83). EDIT: Also noticed that he’s traded in his “A” to wear the “C” for Avto. Not sure when he was elevated to the team’s captain (I know he was definitely still an assistant in October). Tryamkin’s full stats line today is really something: 24:59 TOI, 2 goals (both even strength), 1 assist, 3 points, +3, 5 SOG, 4 hits, 1 block, 0 PIM, 1 penalty drawn
  5. Exactly. See how he finishes out this season (and the various tournaments), what kind of gains he makes in the summer, and most importantly, how he looks at the camps and preseason next year. If he looks ready, he should be on the opening night roster. If he looks close, give him a short AHL tuneup and then call him up later in the season. If he looks like he needs time, either a full year in the AHL or a return to the SHL would both be great spots for him to continue to mature and develop. I’m just done with the hand wringing over his weight. Obviously the stronger he gets, the better (within reason). But if he shows he can be effective against NHL level competition, then he’s ready, regardless of how much he weighs.
  6. Hockeysverige editor-in-chief Uffe Bodin was on 650 earlier today talking Pettersson, Dahlén, and some of the top Swedish prospects for the 2018 draft: If you don’t feel like listening, here’s a summary of the main points (going off memory here and riffing occasionally with my own editorial comments): Bodin had some really nice things to say about Pettersson (although who doesn’t these days) and Dahlén dominating their respective divisions of Swedish pro hockey. Talked about how Pettersson has moved beyond Forsberg and now compared closer to Nilsson at the same age. He noted that when Nilsson was doing it in the 70s, some teams were scoring 10 goals a game, which makes Pettersson’s scoring all the more impressive in today’s more competitive Swedish league. Said that in Sweden, the press is really starting to see Elias as potentially the next great Swedish player, and is often mentioned alongside the names of all time greats. Also mentioned how he expected Elias to have a good shot at playing in the Olympics, especially if he’s springboarding off a strong WJC. Like most Swedish analysts these days, he said it probably wouldn’t hurt for Pettersson to get another year or two in Sweden before coming over to the NHL. Mentioned how thin Elias is and how he hasn’t yet developed his “man muscle” (to quote Bodin). He has a point, but I just find it funny whenever Swedes talk about wanting Pettersson to play in the SHL as long as possible. Kinda feels like if a Utica fan said they thought Demko needed another 3 seasons with the Comets. Bodin also said he expected the Canucks wouldn’t agree with keeping Elias in Sweden too much longer (and noted how Gradin wanted him in the NHL this year). Also mentioned Dahlén and how he has the best Corsi stats in Allsvenskan (and is matching those underlyings with both his individual scoring and on-ice goals). He felt Dahlén might stay with Timrå if they continue to lead the Allsvenskan and have a chance to advance to the SHL, but would likely move to SHL before the end of January if Timrå slips down in the standings. Talked a little bit about Boqvist and Lundeström (2018 eligibles) near the end of the segment.
  7. Should’ve known Dahlén would have a hand in Timrå pulling out a win in this game. They went down a goal with about three minutes left. And I had other things to do today so I just figured it was game over. Nope. Dahlén gets the primary assist on the game tying goal with less than a minute left in regulation. And then my boy Filip Hällander (I would love to see us snag this kid with our 2018 second round pick) scores the OT winner. That’ll teach me not to stop following a game in the final minutes. Sounds like quite the finish.
  8. Maybe those fisheries and wildlife officers are after him again? And he’s currently dragged-up in a disguise and hiding under a blanket somewhere.
  9. Something’s up. Can’t get a good injury report in English. Any Finns out there who can properly translate this? Google translate comes back with: “From Kaskinen's comments, Palmu in a blouse, Ekeståhl-Jonsson was injured or injured. Tallinder less unexpectedly "a small blow to the upper body." #hctps #liiga” I don’t know if “Palmu in a blouse” means he’s wearing a cast/sling, or maybe just wearing a dress shirt or suit (like he’s in the press box as a healthy scratch), or if Palmu has actually started crossdressing?
  10. Heiskanen also picked up a point today (goal) to keep pace with Juolevi at 13 points through 16 GP. Juolevi and Heiskanen are currently charting as follows: -tied for 10th in the Liiga D scoring race (all ages) -tied for 1st in defenseman (all ages) points/game (among Ds with >1GP) -leading all U20 Ds in points and points/game. -tied for 4th in scoring among U20 skaters (including forwards) -tied for 1st in U20 points/game (among all skaters with >1 GP) -tied for the 2nd highest all time points/game pace for Liiga U20 defensemen
  11. In addition to above: 20:07 TOI, +3, 4 SOG, 2 PIM (high sticking)
  12. Was that Olli? I missed most of the second period (where TPS scored 3 goals). But I didn’t see Juoevi get credited for another assist. Looks like he’s only on the scoresheet for the secondary assist on the first goal (Tallinder).
  13. Noticed Juolevi is playing with Henrik Tallinder on TPS’s first pairing. Great to see. Olli had a good thing going partnered with Heikkinen on the second pairing, but moving up to play higher minutes alongside a 700+ NHL games veteran like Tallinder should be even better for his development. Also haven’t seen Palmu playing this game and he’s not listed in the lineup. Maybe injured? Haven’t heard anything. Hopefully not healthy scratched, but his scoring has dropped off significantly since his hot start, so it’s possible.
  14. Juolevi playing right now and already has an assist (his 8th on the season) through 1 period.
  15. 20+ games of eating everyone’s lunch in the SHL will do that.
  16. After a 9 day layoff, Gaudette and Northeastern play a rare Tuesday night game. The Turkey Hangover Classic (actually I just made that up) starts at 7pm EST tonight in Connecticut. Looks like this one is subscription only for the stream. Live stats will be available here and there should be a free audio only broadcast via Huskies Radio. Hopefully the long layoff (and the lingering after-effects of mom’s candied yams) won’t result in a sluggish start for Hockey Gaud and the Huskies.
  17. Yeah, I know. He’s almost pathological when it comes to the snark. But still, you kinda gotta hand it to JD, he’s consistent and sticks to his guns (whether or not you agree with him). And I honestly thought the Guddy part was pretty funny.
  18. I know he’s an unpopular figure on CDC (and I also give him some grief sometimes) but Canucks Army’s JD Burke had some high praise for Juolevi in today’s “mailbag” feature: https://canucksarmy.com/2017/11/27/canucksarmy-monday-mailbag-november-27th/ On Olli’s NHL projections: “Juolevi will be a top pair defenceman with a similar skill set to Dan Hamhuis.” On who’s better, Heiskanen vs. Juolevi: “It’s close. I’ve heard arguments for both players from people whose ability to analyze prospects I trust greatly. I lean towards Juolevi.” I’m not saying Burke is some great authority on prospects, but it’s still noteworthy that even a highly regime-critical guy who second guesses most of management’s decisions (including many recent draft picks) is this high on Juolevi.
  19. Pre-dates the Guldhjälmen (MVP) award, which started in 1986, but yeah, he led the Swedish league in scoring in his rookie season (1975-76) and likely would have won it if it existed at that time.
  20. I’d have to check but it may very well be unprecedented, if Elias were to win the Guldhjälmen at age 19 and as an SHL rookie. Forsberg comes to mind, but he was already age 20 and 21 when he won the award back-to-back in his D+2 and D+3 seasons (which I believe were his 3rd and 4th seasons in that league).
  21. Some fun off the ice stuff. Brock and Bo playing a little baseball at NHL studios: As is obvious from the clip, Brock has improved on the mound. Here’s a vid that includes his infamous first pitch from the prospects trip to Nat Bailey: And Adam Gaudette chimed in today on Twitter with some typical Hockey Gaud dry wit to make note of Brock’s improvement:
  22. Definitely. As much as every player wants to play, it’s still a nice reward for Goldy to spend some days around the big team, hang with the guys, watch some games, get in some practice and coaching from the NHL staff, and then head back to Utica with some extra bucks.
  23. Green said yesterday that Goldy was called up so they could get a look at him during the next few practices. Didn’t sound like he had any intention of getting Goldobin into any games unless there are further injuries. And that he’ll likely be returned to Utica fairly soon.
  24. He’s been pretty snake bitten of late. Lots of chances put wide. And he hasn’t managed to translate several games worth of first line opportunities into much production. A shake up might not be the worst thing for him right now. So long as the 4th line usage is temporary. He only played 7:46 today (and no points). That’s cutting his TOI nearly in half from what he’s played in recent weeks. And he only saw 22 seconds of PP time, compared to him often getting around 2 minutes a night.
