Kevin Epp Dropping "Truth" Bombs???
SID.IS.SID.ME.IS.ME replied to Shirotashi's topic in Canucks Talk
One of the funnier parts for me was where he tried to blame the Vancouver fanbase and media for negative impressions on the OEL trade. Criticism of the trade from outside this market was much harsher. Over at The Athletic, compare the national reporting to the local (Drance): https://theathletic.com/2726110/2021/07/23/nhl-trade-grades-canucks-get-conor-garland-saddled-with-oliver-ekman-larssons-contract-in-deal-with-coyotes/?amp “They’re still not a contender, their financial situation isn’t any better, and they seem to have tethered themselves to one of the worst contracts in the sport. There’s one loser here, and it’s them. Coyotes grade: B Canucks grade: D-” -Sean Gentille “For Vancouver, this trade is a byproduct of cap miscalculations over a period of years that has unfortunately resulted in losing a high pick. OEL is a good player, he’s a mobile smart, skilled defenseman with size, but his best days are likely behind him and he’s also owed quite a lot of money for a long time. Coyotes grade: A- Canucks grade: C+” -Corey Pronman “This is an unmitigated disaster for the Canucks’ long-term outlook, which is a consistent trend for this brain trust that is always putting band-aids on problems they themselves created. This band-aid is a whole new problem and while Garland is a nice reward for it, he’s nowhere near enough compensation to take on the deal considering the draft picks Vancouver gave up. Giving up Garland stings for the Coyotes, but they did well here given the circumstances. The Ekman-Larsson contract really was that bad. Last year, I rated it as the fifth-worst contract in hockey. It only looks worse in the year since. Coyotes grade: B+ Canucks grade: D-” -Dom Luszczyszyn https://theathletic.com/2726050/2021/07/23/drance-why-canucks-mega-deal-to-acquire-oliver-ekman-larsson-conor-garland-is-a-franchise-defining-risk/?amp “When we pull this deal apart, there’s a lot of it that makes sense for the Canucks. If the price is too high, it’s only off a bit, depending on how you weigh the values of the lower value draft picks changing hands. * * * The cost of that improvement is huge, the potential downside is significant. Vancouver has improved itself in the short term with this transaction, which matters for a team that’s been at risk of becoming an industry punchline.” -Drance Not exactly a lovefest from Drancer, but considerably more optimistic than the takes from the guys outside of this market. And there was a lot of similar reporting, coming from outside of Vancouver: “From here, it seems like another big win for the Coyotes” -James O’Brien, NBC Sports “Coyotes: B+ Canucks: D+” -The Score https://www.thescore.com/nhl/news/2187567/amp “If the past few seasons were a harbinger, it’s hard to see a long-term success plan for a player already in his 30s. If that’s the case, Vancouver just took on an awful lot of salary for a very long time.” -Yost, TSN (That’s just some of the reaction) -
Disagree about any of that JT Miller stuff being as bad as Sekeres actually making up stories. Drance definitely has a slant, but he’s at least working with factual material. And he’s pretty clear about when he’s reporting and when he’s editorializing. He definitely plays the “heel” role in Canucks media, and at times, he seems to relish it a little too much. I can well understand why he rubs some people the wrong way. I can only really stomach his content in small doses. But I also think he’s necessary. At least if we hope to have honest and balanced overall reporting. Drance asks the questions that many others (especially those working for outlets that rely on the the team’s goodwill) won’t ask. And Drance still has a conscience. He said recently that he feels bad about pushing some of the recent negative stories, re: Green’s job security, players’ faith in the organization, etc, but he knows that if he doesn’t ask those questions, most of his media peers (especially the credentialed guys travelling with the team) won’t. I think this market deserves to be informed by its media, good and bad, positive and negative stories. And Drance definitely plays a role in that. Without guys like him, most media pressers would be a fluffjob for this team, and Canucks coverage would start to verge on “state media.” He gets on my nerves, but I really think it’s a mistake to put Drance in the same category as Sekeres. To borrow a quote from Moneyball: “There’s good media and there’s bad media. Then there’s 50 feet of crap, then there’s Sekeres.”

That’s not media. Social media is a whole different animal (other than the accounts run by legitimate media members, and I’d say my previous post holds true, when it comes to what those media members write in social media, versus random, anonymous “fans”). I’m on Twitter a fair amount, and Canucks fans certainly haven’t cornered the market on crazy. Passionate? Vocal? Rabid, even? Sure. But no more so than a dozen or more other cities in North America. It wasn’t our local hockey media members posting any of the tweets that really crossed the line about Hamonic. And they definitely weren’t out there flying banners or protesting. Of course, they covered many of those stories. As is their job. If you want to see toxic, cross the pond and check out football fans (and some media) in the UK and Europe. Vancouver pales in comparison. I think we’re actually pretty tame compared to many other major sport fanbases.

I think if you removed Sekeres from the mix, the quality of the local hockey media would improve tenfold. Even the “blogger” types in this market have far more journalistic integrity. But when you have Sekeres repeatedly making up stories, it’s so damaging to the overall coverage. I think other media members are finally getting wise. When IMac tweeted “You know Matt, you were not long ago a serious journalist. Take a look at what you’ve become,” I don’t think he was just referring to the Toronto studio stuff, but the larger issue, and the several instances where Sekeres has been caught spreading lies. People hate on Drance, but I don’t think TD has ever fabricated a story. Not even the much maligned JD Burke has ever sunk to that level. But Sekeres? Too many times now to count. It’s tough to defend the local media when it includes Matt Sekeres, and in a prominent role. But like I said, remove Sekeres from the equation, and I think the overall group here actually does their job fairly well. Certainly Vancouver (sans Sekeres) isn’t any more “toxic” than any other sports city. Epps’ claims about St. Louis and Toronto are laughable. When the Blues were losing, there were plenty of people calling for coach firings and players getting moved. And this past off-season, half of Toronto seemed to want to fire their GM and trade a bunch of their players. I have no doubt that the current Canucks team would be getting just as much heat if they called another city home (at least one in a real hockey market with a passionate fanbase and major media coverage). And when it comes to Epps’ client, Hamonic, I think the coverage would have been harsher in a city like Toronto. For the most part, the Vancouver media showed a lot of restraint. If Hamonic was a Leaf, his vax status story would have been talked about 24/7.

Torts for GM, Linden for Coach?
SID.IS.SID.ME.IS.ME replied to NucksPassion2's topic in Canucks Talk
Wonder if Torts’ murphy bed is still in the coach’s office or if they had that removed? Shouldn’t be too hard to move it to the GM’s office. -

Trev needs to stop slacking and start building up that net worth. I’m not sure I’d want him back in either management or coaching, but he would make an excellent owner (if he had a few billion bucks). -

Rookie GM + rookie head coach = winning? What could possibly go wrong? -
At least he’s been a “warm body” for 13 more AHL games than OJ.

[Signing] Devils re-sign Jack Hughes
SID.IS.SID.ME.IS.ME replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I’m a believer in his talent, but that still does seem risky going 8x8 when Hughes hasn’t really proven (yet) to be a truly elite talent at the NHL level. I think he’ll get there, and the deal will be okay longterm, but I’d probably have punted short term and reevaluated later down the road, as far as going max term. -

They’re still a ways out from being considered a contender for a national championship, but still nice to see NU break into the top-20 rankings. And they should compete for the Beanpot and possibly even a Hockey East championship, which would be a nice feather in McD’s cap, before hopefully going pro next year. -
Sometimes I forget he’s young enough for the 2022 world juniors. Nice to see Truscott get some recognition. The US has a deep system, so just making the preliminary roster is quite an honour. Bodes well for his development if he’s currently viewed by the powers that be as an option for that team.

He probably has one more day left before he’s considered “fully vaccinated.” Benning said on November 18th that Hamonic got his second shot “a couple days ago.” So probably that would mean he’s cleared to travel by December 1st. Not sure if they’ll be flying him out to Ottawa for just the one game? (It’s not like Hamonic has been playing all that well anyway.)

Marc Bergevin for General Manager ?
SID.IS.SID.ME.IS.ME replied to MaxVerstappen33's topic in Canucks Talk
Me too. Big time. He’s an ideal candidate for the job he just took, and would have been a great pick for Vancouver’s vacant President of Hockey Ops position. -

SID.IS.SID.ME.IS.ME replied to MaxVerstappen33's topic in Canucks Talk
Yup. Gorton is definitely running the show in Montreal. They will hire a francophone GM to be the “face” of the team’s management, but he will be answering to the Executive VP on pretty much all matter related to Hockey Ops. I think the Habs would be well served hiring a guy like Luongo, or a similar profile former NHL player born in Quebec, for GM. -
Inactivity creating a lack of trust for fans (?)
SID.IS.SID.ME.IS.ME replied to PetterssonOrPeterson's topic in Canucks Talk
I don’t think it even matters at this point. Good coaches get fired. It happens to every head coach eventually. Even if Green was the reigning Jack Adams winner, he’d still be on the hot seat, after this bad a start. And most teams wouldn’t wait this long. -
[Waivers] Evander Kane, Logan Shaw
SID.IS.SID.ME.IS.ME replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Wonder if they’ll try to send him to the Allen Americans (ECHL) next, if they can’t swing a trade? And then hope he fails to report and they can terminate the deal. I’d assume Kane reports regardless. He can’t afford to lose his contract.
