Two games in and it seems like Green is getting most of the negative attention from fans. Hopefully this continues. Not that I necessarily want Green to be the “whipping boy,” but just that I’d rather see the coach getting the negative attention, and basically shielding the individual players from fan negativity. Rathbone, however, still seems to be getting dragged at times, but mostly from fans who are sour about him grabbing that 3LD spot, and Juolevi getting traded. We’ll have to see if that rises to “whipping boy” levels or not.

All very true, and I think we’ll see him used to protect leads this season. Just not in his 2nd NHL game. I find it easy to understand Green’s decision. 4-2 lead going into the 3rd period, on the road, against a well coached team in their home opener. You know there’s going to be a pushback coming. So Green shortens his bench. Sits Chiasson, which is obvious. And then sits his too worst performing players on differentials. Dowling and Podkolzin were both only 25% CF% at 5v5 on the night. Nearly 20 points worse than the next Canucks forward. Green gets stats reports delivered between periods and you know he uses them to make his decisions. And also, he’s just protecting Podkolzin. We saw through camp that Pod needed a little help with his confidence, and how he responded from that “talk” with his coach. He’s a young guy and finding his way. Maybe he would’ve gotten a boost from being played protecting the lead in the 3rd, but maybe he ends up on the ice when the Flyers score, and that shakes his confidence. He’d already gotten the goal and had a good individual game. Nothing wrong with saying “good job, kid, we’ll take it from here.” Canucks still pull out the win, and Podkolzin gets to take celebratory pictures post-game with his first goal puck. Great result. And really, if you’re going three lines to protect a lead on the road, the players Green used were his best options, and the choices that made sense, based on overall performance that night. Dowling and Podkolzin were getting cratered on possession. And Chiasson isn’t really the guy you want out there to protect a lead (even though he had a great night statistically). I’d probably have made the same call as Green, if I were coaching that game. (And I love Podkolzin and think he’s going to be an amazing two-way NHL player and one of the most trustworthy defensive forwards on the team, eventually.)

Here are the two goals. Get this kid signed and in the lineup! Just scores pure shooter’s goals like they’re nothing. He’s gonna look pretty good in the Canucks middle six and PP. Hopefully as soon as the end of this season. -
It’s really tough to win as the road team in a home opener. I think so far this season, 75% of the home teams have won their home openers. And IIRC the Canucks are undefeated in their own home openers the last 7-8 seasons (when they’ve been a pretty bad team). Just something to keep in mind on this road trip. EDIT: Not saying we’re gonna lose tonight, cuz obviously we’re coming back to win, despite the odds.

[Extension] Charlie McAvoy 8 years
SID.IS.SID.ME.IS.ME replied to flat land fish's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Yeah, I don’t mind this deal nearly as much as the others. McAvoy is arguably the most impactful defenceman in the league at 5v5 and should be paid accordingly. Some of the other guys are a mirage of bloated counting stats from situational play, but have pretty big flaws in their overall games, and aren’t worth anything close to their deals. This one, however, is worth the money, given the actual value returned on the ice. -
[Waivers] Christian Wolanin

Yeah, I can see the similarity you’re getting it. I’d add to the earlier post that Covid and the creation of taxi squads was probably the worst thing for guys like this, who really needed to be getting into as many games as they could, both to return to form after injuries, and to re-establish themselves in the eyes of coaches/managers, by actually showing well in those games. Shortened seasons, and sitting idle on a taxi squad, were about the worst things for them. -

He had a bad injury right after that season. 2018-19 he looked very solid and like an up and coming NHLer. Statistically, he was even better. But I think he tore a labrum or something in training in 2019 and that pretty much ruined his follow up year. Had surgery and by the time he was back in the lineup, he was playing catch-up, and also dealing with a new coaching staff, so starting from scratch basically. And also having younger, higher drafted guys, also competing for looks. Of course, really good talent never gets ignored, so it can’t really be said that he was passed over, if he had been showing legit NHL top end ability. But certainly he wasn’t really ever giving a ton of rope, or extra belief from the decision makers, after that 2019 injury. -
Somebody needs to make a video with that hit on repeat and set it to “Chelsea Dagger.”

Happy Birthday, Quinn Hughes!
SID.IS.SID.ME.IS.ME replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Canucks Talk
It’s true. While a player like Quinn should have many good years after this contract, the next six years will probably include the best (individual) seasons of his career. -
[Signing] Senators re-sign Brady Tkachuk
SID.IS.SID.ME.IS.ME replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
So basically the Sens dropped a year and came up around a quarter mill AAV (from their reported 8x8 offer). That’s a significant concession, but even still, it will probably prove to be a good deal for them. At ~57M, it’s comparable to doing a 7x3 and then a 9x4, which is probably on the low side of what they could have expected to pay on a bridge deal and future extension (which is apparently what Tkachuk wanted). Unless Brady flops, this should save Ottawa some money over the long run. And they definitely have the space to carry a higher cap hit right now (unlike the Canucks with Pettersson). Plus, they get contract certainty for seven more years, and won’t have to do this dance again until 2027-28 (assuming they keep Tkachuk in Ottawa for the life of this contract). -
So Florida has their season opener tonight and OJ apparently isn’t in their lineup (yet) or even a healthy scratch. Appears to currently be listed as “injured.” Hmm… It’s interesting. The Panthers released an opening 23 man roster earlier that included Juolevi, but after Nutivaara (injured in practice IIRC) was moved to IR, they called up both Kiersted and Priskie (two AHL Dmen) And Kiersted is expected to play 3LD tonight, in place of Nutivaara. Unless Juolevi has actually been shifted to IR for some reason, they’d have 24 active roster players (by my count), which isn’t allowed. So I guess OJ isn’t currently on the active roster, despite what’s been released officially? Maybe it’s something with Covid protocols? And they’re just waiting on negative test results? Or Juolevi had some delays actually getting to Florida? Otherwise, you have to wonder why he’s gone from officially listed on the 23 man roster, to being replaced on the active roster by an AHL call-up: Just makes me wonder if there’s something else going on. Like maybe OJ picked up an injury. Or possibly the Panthers “found” one, and are setting things up for an conditioning loan, to stash him in the AHL for a little while? It’s probably nothing. Most likely just some delay, but it’s definitely curious, and nothing is getting reported on OJ’s current roster status. Anyway, this is what their roster looks like in the most recent pregame reports I’ve seen today: 23 Carter Verhaeghe // 16 Sasha Barkov // 13 Sam Reinhart 11 Jonathan Huberdeau // 9 Sam Bennett // 74 Owen Tippett 77 Frank Vatrano // 15 Anton Lundell // 70 Patric Hornqvist 94 Ryan Lomberg // 19 Joe Thornton // 10 Anthony Duclair 52 MacKenzie Weegar // 5 Aaron Ekblad 42 Gus Forsling // 7 Radko Gudas 8 Matt Kiersted // 62 Brandon Montour 72 Sergei Bobrovsky 30 Spencer Knight Scratched: Eetu Luostarinen, Chase Priskie, Mason Marchment Injured: Noel Acciari, Markus Nutivaara, Kevin Connauton, Olli Juolevi

Yeah, Burroughs destroyed the much larger Bjugstad in that fight, which is always fun to see from a smaller guy. Especially when it’s the big guy starting trouble and the little guy finishing it. But it would be misrepresenting things to suggest that lopsided a fight is typical of Burroughs (or that Bjugstad is a challenging opponent). Burroughs is definitely tough, and he’s had 40+ fights in his career, going back to his WHL days, but he’s not a Rick Rypien type, who can go toe to toe with the biggest, toughest guys, and come away with an impressive W/L record. Still, he’s definitely a guy who’s not afraid to step up, if the moment calls for it. And one thing I’ve noticed from Burroughs’s overall fight card is that quite often his opponents are also assessed additional penalties for antics like charging/boarding/etc, and Burroughs is coming to the defence of a downed or injured teammate. That’s what you like to see. There are lots of clips where he’s going in immediately, without hesitation, to settle the score after someone took liberties with his teammates.

Don’t worry guys, Benning will just trade a pick midseason, if we need to add some toughness to the lineup. (Joking/not joking) Best of luck to Big Mac. Seems like a great guy and I really wish him well. But hopefully he and/or Gads find their way back to us on waivers later this season. Would love to claim them back. If they do manage to stay up and play their whole seasons in NHL lineups with the Flyers and Sharks, I wish them both success. They obviously weren’t (for right or wrong) going to get that chance here this season.

Maybe not. It depends on how they’re defining “unvaccinated.” Ylonen has apparently taken the jab, but he might not yet meet the “fully vaccinated” definition. It also depends on how they’re defining “NHL players” and if that’s only counting those listed on NHL rosters, with all other contracted players (demoted to AHL or otherwise) not included. Still, given the vaccination rates in the population, and the amount of hesitancy out there, having only four unvaccinated players (no matter how they arrive at that number) is pretty impressive. Of course, the NHL and NHLPA didn’t leave the players with many options (to their credit IMO).
