So, trades for our RFA's-what's realistic?
SID.IS.SID.ME.IS.ME replied to Got the Babych's topic in Canucks Talk
A few reasons. First, Pettersson’s value in three years might grow beyond what Vancouver can afford. We’ll have to see where the cap goes, and also what new contracts for Boeser, Horvat, Miller, etc might look like. But it’s possible the Canucks won’t have the cap room to keep this core together beyond three years. It it comes to that, they’ll need to consider selling off one of their high profile/high salary players, and they’re much better off having done advanced planning for this, and giving themselves as much time and as many options as possible (which includes selling Pettersson). Additionally, posturing themselves in a way that suggests they’d actually be willing to trade Petey, if his demands are too high, should help the club’s negotiating position. Especially if the team is doing well and the young core really wants to stay together and compete. I also think it’s not generally beneficial to wait long enough for the market to set new comps. I do think that Benning did well, given the environment, but he may have been able to do even better if he’d gotten out ahead of things, and the Canucks had been one of the teams setting the market, rather than having to react to it. There’s also the threat of offer sheets, so once you get into the off-season, the team needs not only to plan for enough cap space to complete an extension, but also display enough space and flexibility to fend off any hostile teams that may look to take advantage. Waiting makes life harder, and off-season planning more of a challenge. It’s much easier to tinker with the roster, and consider making final additions, if Petey’s extension is already on the books, rather than still pending, and having to account for this unknown while the team makes other roster moves. I also think Pettersson may welcome the chance to complete his next extension much earlier the next time around (assuming a fair offer is presented to him), rather than repeat this year’s experience. -

/thread? Glad the extensions are done and we can take some wind out the the sails of this current trade discussion. That said, I really hope the Canucks get going early on Petey’s next extension, and set a goal of completing the deal during the 2023-24 season. Even setting a fairly “hard” negotiation deadline at the TDL, and approaching the talks as “we get this extension done during the season or all options are on the table, including trades.” Not at all saying that I’d want Petey traded. It’s a last resort. But if the numbers aren’t workable in three years, then we need to have a Plan B to maximize return on that asset. Getting to work early on the next extension allows the team to also have maximum time available if negotiations turn south and they have to look to at a trade to recover as much value asset as possible. I also think that they could get a longterm deal could easily get done during the season, if everyone knows that the team plans to make a good faith effort (including very fair market value offers) to complete Petey’s next deal during the season, rather than wait for the off-season. -
Glad to see Pettersson come in 500K less than Hughes, rather than both at around $7.7-7.75M, as initially reported. It’s a small difference, but every dollar counts, when you’re taking about qualifying offers and the starting point of negotiations for the next extension. Hughes at $7.85M comes in just 350K over the $7.5M x 6 years I’d been suggesting months ago, so I’m pretty happy with that contract. Nice deal. Pettersson, I’d have liked more term, but after the Kaprisov deal came down, a 3 year bridge made more sense, given the Vancouver cap situation. Getting Petey locked up for a modest 350K over the Barzal comp is very good result. I’ve always said Pettersson was the superior player and should be viewed as having more value than Barzal, so getting him done on a very comparable deal, running a year later, and only 0.5% more cap percentage, is good value. Nice job by Benning (and also credit to the rest of the team working on these extensions). Probably the best result we could hope for, at least under the circumstances (and today’s not the day I’m going to be holding this GM’s feet to the fire for creating those circumstances ). I hope GMJB is already planning for the next round of negotiations with Pettersson. Ideally, they start hammering things out on day one of Petey’s third year, and a long term extension gets announced during the 2023-24 regular season, rather than things dragging on as late as they did this time around. (Now just need some news to clarify the Hamonic situation. Latest reports sound like he’s not going to opt out for the season. If he finally going to take the jab so he can play? Try to force a trade? Or is he retiring?)

Yeah, the conditions have likely changed dramatically, since Demers refused to waive his NTC for Vancouver in 2017. At the time, he was only one year into a newly minted $4.5M AAV x 5 year contract. Had he agreed to the trade, he’d have likely paid around $2M more in taxes in Vancouver than he has in Arizona. (As well as paying around double for his housing and at least 10% more money on most consumer goods.) That’s a pretty significant hit to the pocket book, just to join a struggling/rebuilding team. Easy to see why he chose Arizona (similar low taxes to Florida) over Vancouver. Today, however, he’s looking at a cheap one year deal to extend his career. The landscape has changed significantly and I doubt he’d refuse the Canucks if they offered him ~1M for one season. Lots of talk out there already that he may have to settle for around league minimum this year.

Are JP Barry's tactics affecting your opinion of Petey and Quinn?

Whenever I hear people talk about player agents ruining the game, I think about Drew Doughty’s deal. No agent. Represented himself. And got $11M AAV until he’s 37 years old. -

Yeah, if you’re a high profile player repped by CAA Hockey, you’re getting both Brisson and Barry working on your contract. They’re partners and co-heads of the agency. -
And he’s not just willing to step up and fight, but he wins more fights than he loses, and is capable of sending a message. That’s especially rare in a player who also has the talent to contribute on the scoresheet. Fighting is not as “necessary” in today’s game as it once was, but games still turn ugly every once in a while, and it’s good to have a guy in the lineup who can deal out the occasional beat down, rather than just show his bravery by accepting the challenge, but usually losing, or at best surviving a fight with another team’s tough guy. Not saying Gadjovich is “goon” or even a legit heavyweight, but he’s probably the closest thing we have in the system right now. I think he’s shown enough so far in camp and preseason that he deserves a real shot at making the team, and possible more of one than he’s being given. He’s looked rather good this year. The skating is vastly improved, to the point where it doesn’t really look like a weakness any more, just “average.” And he’s always had excellent hands in tight and really strong goalscoring instincts. Maybe he’s not yet a “proven” NHL level player, and certainly he has some room to improve. I just hope that he’s still Canuck property if and when he reaches his potential and shows what kind of player he might become.

Shh… back away slowly. You’re going against the narrative, and there may be consequences. Seriously, though, we really don’t know what the numbers are on either side. It’s entirely possible that management is just as much (or possibly even more) to blame for the delay as the players/agents. (Now save yourself while I’ve drawn their fire. )

What are the rules for a coach who’s also a couch potato?

Rathbone net front should make for an interesting PP2 look.

I think the problem was Benning saying Hamonic would be at training camp, and also saying that the team and staff would be 100% fully vaxxed. He would have been better served by saying that Hamonic had a personal/family issue preventing him from attending training camp and the team would not be providing any details or answering further questions, out of respect for the player’s privacy. He also could have easily said that every player and staff member attending training camp was fully vaxxed (which was true), rather than insisting the team would be 100% vaxxed by the time the season opened (which made it pretty obvious that there was an unvaccinated player). Benning created a situation where Hamonic not showing up immediately fuelled media and fan speculation. It was an unfortunate PR fumble by the Canucks GM.

Yeah, 2009. The twins were days away from testing the July 1st free agency market and Gillis and Gilman flew to Sweden to speak with them directly. Got the deals done with maybe a day to spare (I think they met on Monday or Tuesday and free agency was Wednesday that week). Interesting side note, J.P. Barry was the twins’ NA agent at that time (they also had a Swedish agent, if memory serves). Barry was on the same flight as Gillis and they bumped into each other on the plane, much to the surprise of both. Barry was also heading to Sweden, to prepare the twins for July 1st and hitting the open market.

You expect too much. I expect no link to show up by start time. Eventually someone will find it on Twitter, maybe ten minutes after puck drop. Stream will crash before end of first period. They’ll get it back up for the second, but with no sound. Then the sound will come on, but with a delay. Screen will go black for a couple minutes during the third period, and then they’ll finally have things working properly for the last five minutes of the game. Give or take.

From Faber at Canucks Army: “As for the height, I compared us and he is probably about 6′-6’1″ as we expected. I’m 6’3″ and could clearly see that I had a couple of inches on him. He is 100% not 6’4″ like EliteProspectssays. That coward J.D. Burke can’t get anything right…” The obvious takeaway is that Chris Faber is actually 6’6” -
Yeah, we’ll see. And I’m definitely not saying “Demers to Van E5” , just that I’d look at Demers on a cheap one year, if indeed there’s uncertainty around whether or not Hamonic will even play this season. Not that Demers is a clean replacement option for Hamonic either. But he’s at least a capable depth RHD and he does have some size and physicality, plus veteran presence. Could do worse. And if Hamonic ends up not playing, the cap savings (from replacing him with Demers or similar) could prove useful. If we could cobble together the defence for one year, with a RHD of Myers, Poolman, Schenn, Demers, plus the depth guys, and have an additional $2M+ to throw at Petey and Hughes, it wouldn’t be the worst result. Might even be able to lock up both with term.

If I were to speculate on Demers’ reasons for not waiving his NTC for the Canucks (in 2017), I’d say taxes were the #1 factor. He had four years left on a $4.5M AAV contract. Had he accepted the trade to Vancouver, he’d have ~$2M less money in the bank today. It’s not surprising he chose to go to Arizona (low tax) from Florida (low tax). I’d expect his 8 team no trade list was mostly made up of the highest taxed NHL teams. Today, however, we’re probably talking about a $750K one year deal. I doubt saving ~$75K on his taxes is going to be much of a factor (at least compared to $2M). EDIT: Canucks could also just step up to $825K to offset any issues.
