It should still be cheaper, just probably not quite as cheap as some were hoping/predicting. But if Petey and Hughes had both shown an upward trajectory in 2020-21, compared to their elite level 2019-20 seasons, they’d probably each be valued at close to eight figure AAVs on any longterm deals, and even bridge deals for both of them might have been somewhat challenging to fit under our current cap.

Just waiting for the other shoe to drop: “In exchange for this extraordinary concession to the West Coast market, the NHL has also rescheduled all games in the 2021-22 season to a universal, league-wide start time of 7pm EST.”

Yeah, nothing wrong with playing in Liiga. It’s probably the 4th or 5th best elite professional hockey league in the world. Average salary is around €80,000, with higher end players making €100,000-200,000, and the top/star players >€200,000. I don’t know what Jasek’s contract looks like, but he was recruited and signed to play 1C for Pelicans, so I’d expect his salary is in the higher range. Maybe he’s not getting top player money, but as a first liner, he’s probably among the 120+ players in that league who earn >100,000 euros per year. I don’t expect him to quit hockey any time soon, to become a firefighter or whatever, if he can make that kind of money playing in Europe. And if he keeps up his performance (currently leading Liiga in scoring), I’d expect to see him either re-signed by Vancouver next season or his rights traded, so another NHL team can sign him.

Canucks 2021 Rookie Camp

That’s great news! I’m gonna have to see if I can make it for Saturday. (Hopefully the Covid precautions don’t draw out the antivaxxer crowd for a “protest” at the rink. But Abbotsford has schools and a hospital, so probably the nutjobs will be too busy harassing kids and sick people. ) -
Hopefully that happens anyway. I’d like to see us trade both Pearson and Myers at some point, so we can apply that cap space elsewhere. Ideally it coincides with upward pressure from young players ready to take over those spots, and replace those pricier veterans’ lineup roles and contributions, but at a much lower cap hit.

Canucks 2021 Rookie Camp

Canucks’ new social media team team having some fun with us. Media gets one day in the building, then locked out for the other three. And now the in-house team gives us a squat statue vid. It would be a pretty legendary troll job if all @Canucks released on Twitter was a daily video dose of this one drill for the remainder of rookie camp. -
Kid’s got a tonne of skill. Anyone seeing enough camp video to get a handle on his skating? The book on Lockhart is that he had all the characteristics of a top level prospect, other than his skating. Not that the scouts say he’s a poor skater, he’s actually considered pretty quick. Just not “little guy” quick. Some reports say he lacks explosiveness, doesn’t have an elite “top gear,” and isn’t quite as dynamic as you like to see from an undersized player. But he also had his season canceled and hasn’t had eyes on him over the past year. Nobody’s really seen him play since his D-1, so he could easily have put in some work and made significant gains. If he’s now looking like a typical “water bug” type out there, and is noticeable, in the right ways, when it comes to his speed, acceleration, pace, escapability, etc, then he’s going to be pretty exciting prospect, because the skill and offensive tools are definitely there with Lockhart. I’m enjoying the flashes of high end talent we’re seeing in the rookie camp highlights. I just really want to get a better look at his skating.

It’s tricky to tell from the camera angle, but does #59 Viktor Persson look really tall compared to Ryan Johnson (6’1”), Woo (6’), and Kannok-Leipert (6’4”)? Persson is listed at 6’2”, but I think he might actually be the tallest guy on the ice. EDIT: I think that camp measurement on Kannok-Leipert might be another typo, and he’s not 6’4” but maybe around 6’1”, but still, Persson looks taller than 6’2”. -
Unanimous approval by FDA on question 2, recommending boosters for >65yo and high risk populations. Seems like a good result. They’re being cautious about doing a blanket approval of third shots, due to limited safety data for boosters (especially in younger people), and questions whether or not they’re even needed for everyone, as two doses still are highly effective in preventing serious illness, in most people. Also, an added side benefit might be that not doing 3 doses on the entire population of rich countries might mean getting more first and second doses into the supply chain for some of the poorer counties.

Depends on the rain. That middle of winter rain, when it’s below five degrees or so, I’d rather it just froze to snow. Especially when you get some wind and that sideways rain that soaks you pretty quick and chills you to the bone. Give me snow instead. Rain like today is fine though.

[Article] Offseason grades from the Athletic
SID.IS.SID.ME.IS.ME replied to The_Rocket's topic in Canucks Talk
I think their reasoning is that the trade evaluation is separate from the cap management analysis on the new players acquired. Unlike most of their compatriots at The Athletic (who IIRC rated the trade either a D-minus or F for Vancouver), Drance and Dayal think the deal itself was a good one for the Canucks, based on moving out the full weight on Player Name, Roussel, and Beagle; getting a high end asset in Garland back, and also securing nearly $6M of cap retention on OEL. Those parts alone were worth far more than what Vancouver gave up in the two draft picks (EDIT: sorry, three picks, counting the 7th rounder). Enough of an overall “sweetener”/value gain that even taking back OEL’s “negative value” contract becomes a net positive, and a significant enough one to rate the overall trade a B+. But looking at the 2021-22 roster and moving forward, they don’t believe OEL is anywhere near value for his contract, and that’s why, as a separate asset, they rate OEL a D grade, from a cap management perspective. I’m not saying I necessarily agree with their lettergrades, or even the methodology, but I think it’s understandable, and not really all that far off (especially if you’re going heavier on analytics in your evaluation). -

Pretty sure Luke Schenn is taking #2, just hasn’t been officially confirmed by the team. -
[Article] Offseason grades from the Athletic
SID.IS.SID.ME.IS.ME replied to The_Rocket's topic in Canucks Talk
Wow, that’s a lot of negative reaction to an overall B-minus rating on the Canucks’ offseason! I mean, the only really “negative” grades in the article are for Poolman, OEL, and lack of extensions for EP/QH. On Poolman they basically are only concerned about the 4 year term, and that’s hardly an unfair criticism. The AAV they only consider a minor overpay, but the term is high, and that’s fair point. OEL’s contract is a risk. That’s just a given. Arizona had to pay the Canucks to take it on, because it’s considered a liability. The negative value was confirmed by the trade itself. In a pure efficiency sense, you have to grade that as a negative, in terms of cap management, just by virtue of the Canucks taking on a contract that has been clearly defined as “negative value” in the market. As for Petey and Hughes, I’d have given the extensions an “I” (incomplete) grade, but that’s basically an “F” until the work is submitted, and then you update the grade. They chose to give a D-minus, for now, with a pretty fair assessment in the write-up. Overall B-minus seems... fine? And if the EP/QH extensions work out well, The Athletic’s overall grade (in a revised article) probably jumps to a B or B-plus (maybe even an A-minus if the deals are really good). Not sure why people are mad. -
Yeah, haven’t really talked too much about this issue, but it does give Hughes and Pettersson a lot of leverage, if one of them were to hold out past the season opener. Would make for a much more difficult LTIR planning. I haven’t looked at the specific numbers, but I’m assuming they simply can’t maximize Ferland’s LTIR, with the present roster, if they don’t have both Petey and Hughes signed? Would hate to see them end up in a Toronto/Marner situation (and the rest of the league knowing it) and having to scramble (and quite likely need to pay out assets to acquire another LTIR contract), just to create enough space in the reliefs pools to fit in an extension after the season starts. Camp is obviously the first deadline, mostly for practicality and wanting to have all the players available for testing and training. But the real hard deadline is clearly the season opener, because missing that one is a massive headache for the team, and offers a pretty big hammer for the players and their reps, should they decide to use that leverage, and weaponize the Canucks cap situation against them. Hopefully it doesn’t come to that. I haven’t seen anything to suggest the negotiations are hostile. Seems like the team and agency are working together, and the numbers are pretty clear (as far as what’s available under the cap), just taking some time to get it done.

Hopefully the Canucks don’t rush him into the lineup and ruin his development.

Was just going to post the same. Maybe true of his congregation? (Or maybe not, at least based on my childhood experience with church.) -
Yeah, definitely as far as last (regular) season goes, Zajac looks to be the better of the three (although there’s an argument for Galchenyuk having better underlyings, and he’s certainly on the more favourable side of the age curves). Staal seemed to have gotten old and slow very quickly, going from being a legitimate top-six player just a year ago, to being well in the sub-replacement level tier for most of this past regular season. I think he’s probably not quite as bad as that, and he had some good moments in the playoffs, but he’s certainly declined rather quickly. Still, for a 5C/depth player, probably any one of them could fit the bill. I definitely wouldn’t be against adding some veteran “graybeard” depth at 750K. Especially if they’re also willing to go down to Abby, if the roster situation demands it, and help mentor some of the kids. Not sure there’s a great chance of getting either Zajac or Staal to choose Vancouver (if they have other options), but we’ll see what happens.

Yeah, by that standard, he’s should definitely be getting into the USA Hockey Hall of Fame. Maybe once his contract expires and he’s officially retired, he’ll get the nod.
