[GDT] 2023 NHL All-Star Game
DeNiro replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in General Hockey Discussion
McDavid and Draisaitl going up against Mackinnon and Makar should have been good motivation. I think it’s true that if they’re not the stars they won’t try though. -

*3 goals Coaches challenge in an all star game is the most ridiculous thing I’ve seen. Deboer forgetting it’s about the players and not the coaches… -

Two conferences that clearly have built in rivalries and don’t wanna lose to each other. Wish the Central and the Pacific had that going. Those rivalries are weak though. -

“One last time, for now” That’s twice he’s mentioned the possibility of playing with him again. Might be nothing cause you never know what the future holds is all he means. But if he’s thinking of signing long term with the Isles, I don’t see any way he’ll play with Petey again. Might be him indicating future plans perhaps? -

Ovechkin and Crosby showing McDavid and Draisaitl how superstars should play in these games. -

I think I realized one of the biggest reasons I hate the all star weekend. They spend the whole time trying to showcase the “personalities” of these players. Problem is it makes most of them look even more boring, and then the few of them they pump up as having big personalities end up looking like cringey douchebags. Showcase the skill and lose the fluff. These guys aren’t basketball or football players, stop artificially trying to inject personalities into them! -

Petey had a hat trick. Deboer is a goof. -

I’m always quickly reminded why I hate these games. No one tries until halfway through because it looks cooler to not try? Even though it just makes for horrible hockey. Then they all try at the end and the game gets a little better. Would it kill them to play at that level the whole game? No ones hitting or checking, they can at least skate hard. -

The central are trying way harder you can tell. Probably cause they know it’s the only thing they’ll win this season. -

Two of the best players in the game playing like they’re in a Wednesday night beer league. Great way to showcase the game… -

[Signing] Canucks re-sign Brock Boeser
DeNiro replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
When you force 21/22 year old players into the lineup they absolutely need guidance from trainers and coaches. The players are ultimately responsible but the point is that their goals were clearly misguided. These players needed to get stronger and faster not just heavier. -
OJ was more than just injuries. He didn’t have the commitment to be an NHLer. We need to stop making excuses for that pick. Boeser was not a top 10 pick. Podz is looking good but it doesn’t change the fact he’s not on the roster. And players taken after him are currently starring on their teams. The other top 10 pick was traded away for players we can’t even dump for free.

Wonder if we’ll see Bo and Petey together one last time. -
[Signing] Canucks re-sign Brock Boeser

That’s one player who developed under his watch. The rest regressed after they came into the NHL. I would say he’s part of it. He’s the one that sets goals and targets for players in the offseason. When you have guys like Boeser and Virtanen coming back from offseason training bulked up and slower I would say there’s an issue. -
Even if that first can just fill a role on your team. Bottom pair D or even a bottom 6 energy/shutdown guy. Having guys completely bust out absolutely kills a teams build. We’ve had 6 top 10 picks since 2014 and only currently have two players on our roster to show for it. That’s absolutely brutal. Benning needed to be canned long before he was.

I would have been surprised if he didn’t have a quiet game. New team, new linemates, systems etc. Hasn’t even had a practice yet. Once he’s comfortable and can move up to the top 6 then hopefully he’ll shine.
