Edit- Rick Tocchet Expected To Be Next Head Coach
DeNiro replied to BertaNuck's topic in Canucks Talk
The timing and the process is what I have a problem with. I really don’t see the benefit of an in season coaching change. Get to meet the players and assess their play in person? Is that really necessary? You can do that in training camp. And to not know all of your options just seems short sited (which this management seems to be good at). Like what if a coach becomes available that you thought never would? Do you not owe it to yourself and the team to explore that? But yea I’ll give him a chance. I’m really more anxious to know who his assistants are to be honest. That to me will be the biggest indicator if management has learned their lesson or they’re doing more of the same. -

We have. Im not sure management has… Important for a coach to have input on player acquisition. Not sure Bruce had that. You need players that can play the way the coach wants though. Looking at our roster and I don’t see a whole lot of players that fit Tocchett’s M.O. -

As long as he comes with the directive of not winning games. Learn the systems, get the guys scoring and all that. But mostly just sit back and observe for next season. Which pieces should go? Which pieces should stay? What kind of players do we need? Etc. -

Hard to tell sometimes when our GMs are the ones travelling around watching players it seems. They say the Lekkeramaki pick was a collaborative effort but I have a hard time believing that Allvin wasn’t pushing extra hard for him. Maybe they wanted to make the new boss happy and just went along? I really hope they’re looking at upgrading their scouting department though. A decade of poor scouting is a huge contributor to why we’re so bad now. -

I 100% think Boudreau would be having more success had they hired someone like John Stevens as assistant. Even Green would have been set up for success had he chosen an actual NHL assistant rather than Baumgartner. Shaw was the best help he had and he didn’t even use him in the right role till it was too late. The assistants are so important and yet keep getting overlooked in this organization. Either they wanna give their farm team guys an opportunity or they’re just being cheap. But these are the results you get when you cheap out and don’t hire experienced guys with good track records. -
I mean Zadina and Cossa also looking like busts. Edvinsson remains to be seen. Seider and Raymond look like studs but even they’ve fallen off. Funny how when you look past the hype every GM is fallible.

[Rumour] Bo Horvat Trade/Contract Talks

We need centers more than we need wingers though. We have Podkolzin, Hoglander, Karlsson, and Klimovich stewing down in the minors. We can afford to lose winger depth as long as it’s for a potentially elite center. -

I hope they realize this time that the assistant coaches are just as important if not more important than the coach. Like Boudreau is a good coach in that he rallies the guys and gets them feeling good about themselves, but he’s not an X’s and O’s guy. Those are your assistant coaches. Guys that work day in and day out with the D, the penalty kill, and the powerplay. These guys are crucial to teaching players how to play the system and getting buy in. How they thought Yeo, Cull, and King were good enough for those roles I’ll never understand. That’s one of the biggest reasons they’re in this mess though. Tocchett can be fine if he can connect with the players and get them to play hard, but it has to come with experienced assistants teaching these guys the system. Looking at Tocchett’s past assistants and guys he’s worked with I really hope it’s Martin and Housley. These guys come with a ton of experience and credentials and could be a really good compliment. Housley especially could be a good mentor for Quinn. Hall of fame defenseman who made a career out of playing a similar style to Hughes. -

I kind of wish the play by play matched a little better. But I guess “He backhands it down the ice” could work. -

And then we expect different results. Teams like the Oilers and Avalanche pulled themselves out of the bottom by drafting 1st-4th not by drafting 10-15. -

This is the justification every year when we start to climb. People say well we weren’t gonna win anyways, or there’s no guarantees in the draft lottery. Even if we don’t win why wouldn’t you want a better prospect? Because moral victories? Getting the players to feel good about themselves in mean nothing games? BS. Our goal needs to be to put us in the best position possible in the draft. Only way to give this team the talent it needs to pull itself out of this pit. Too proud to lose for better picks but perfectly fine losing for the first 2/3 of the season… -

Exactly. Thats valuing Wright way too much that we have to add. They need to add on their side if we’re also giving up our best prospect. If we can get Wright, Borgen, and a 1st then I have no problem with Lekkeramaki being included. -

I’m worried this managements desire to be good soon will impact what they value in a trade. Targeting 25-26 year old players who contenders deem expendable might not be the best approach. If they can’t help a cup team win there’s probably a reason for it. I also hope they are very clear with teams with what their needs are. Don’t get fooled by a big offer with lots of average pieces that don’t fill any of our needs. We need a young RHD and a RHC, nothing less than that. If either of them are the teams best prospect so be it. Keep pushing for them. If they don’t wanna part with them tell them to take hike. Don’t waste time with teams that don’t have those pieces. -

People constantly have worries over Russian players and none of them come true. If you believe the war won’t be over in 3 years I guess sure you could have a concern. It’s doesn’t seem to be affecting our current Russian players though. I really doubt it will be an issue and any team that passes on him for that reason will be kicking themselves. -

I wish they’d at least pretend like they’re looking at all their options. Way too much Penguins nepotism going on right now. We’re gonna turn into the 2000’s Oilers pretty quick here. -

You do it in the offseason! Last thing we need right now is a coaching bump that hurts our draft position. It makes zero sense. Also how much searching did they really do? He did the same thing with Allvin. He already had his mind made up… -

[Rumour] Bo Horvat Trade/Contract Talks

To be fair that equation included a healthy Demko playing like he did last season. Not making excuses for them, but that would likely make the difference for us being a playoff team. -

I mean there’s a million hypotheticals you could worry about with any prospect. I’m really not worried about him fighting in a war as one of those hypotheticals. Like in America they don’t draft high profile people or people from wealthy families. He won’t get drafted. They’ll draft poor lower class people long before him. Its 3 years you’d have to wait. Any player you’re getting at 5 or 6 you’re waiting at least 3 years for. This concern is so overblown. When was the last time a Russian taken in the first round refused to come over? It doesn’t happen. He’ll wanna come to the NHL cause that’s where he’ll get paid. No different than any other Russian player. Its really not that big of a risk. We would look stupid to pass on a superstar because of hypotheticals. -

He will be the best player available at 5 or 6. Not taking the best player available has resulted in us drafting Virtanen and Juolevi over Ehlers and Tkachuk. I swear this is why you never hire a scout as a GM. They always think they know more or try to complicate things. If you just made selections based on consensus rankings you’d probably have more success. -

Based on Allvins comments about needing to hit home runs and not drafting third line players I would say yes. Being patient with a player like that could really pay off. Could get a superstar on an ELC in 3 years. I think you’ll see that pay off for a team like Washington who wasnt afraid to take Miroshnichenko. He’s gonna come over here ready to make an impact in a few years. -
