Funny because his strength is actually his play in the defensive zone. At development camp he said he would like to get better offensively. You always needs high points guys. We can get big hitters and shot blockers without a high first round pick. Those players are much easier to come by then what Willander brings.
-
Yep. When you break it down it’s easy to see why they made the decision to buy him out. We can build a much better team without his giant cap hit even in those two bad years.
-
3.25 is hardly top 4 money. It would be great if he could step up and play that role but we don’t need him to. We signed Cole for that role. The way I see it is they’re still looking at someone to pair with Hughes. Hughes Trade Cole Hronek Soucy Myers
-
We already signed one with the cap savings in Soucy. Im talking about the two years we get hit with a 4.7 mil cap penalty. We can find a cheap D man in those years that brings more than OEL did.
-
No the one who stuck them with that ridiculous contract should be fired…and he was. Ownership signed off on it because they saw how much their pushing to be contenders caused this whole mess. They did it to themselves so there’s no way they’re firing management for cleaning up something they helped create. I also don’t understand how people think those two bad years are going to destroy us somehow…Like you realize we would have had OELs full cap hit of 7.25 those years if we didn’t buy him out right? The other 6 years are fairly insignificant cap penalties. You’re talking about maybe the difference of an extra bottom pairing D man or bottom 6 player. If you can’t scout well enough to find those players for cheap you don’t stand a chance anyways.

Not mixed signals at all it was pretty clear. This team is better without OEL even with the buyout penalty. Teams that win in the playoffs aren’t doing it with players like him. Too soft and doesn’t excel at any one aspect of the game. Id rather take that cap hit and try and find a bottom pair guy making 2-3 mil that plays physical, kills penalties, is good defensively. Keeping a player that doesn’t fit what you’re trying to build just to avoid a couple years of cap penalties is a bad idea. Like you said yourself they are both bad choices but this is the best they could do with a bad situation.
-
You realize they needed ownership approval for a buyout like this right?
-
It proves that this team is better off without OEL regardless of the cap penalty. Nah there’s still a path to contention it’s just gonna take alot of smart moves from this management group. I get that you’re jaded and have PBSD (Post Benning Stress Disorder) but don’t worry everything will be fine.
-
If you can’t build a cup contender without an extra 4.7 mil, you were never going to build one. There will be a lot more that determines how far this team can go than that cap penalty.
-
If we don’t capitalize on Petey, Hughes, and Demko’s prime years we might as well blow it up. OELs contract was an anchor that didn’t allow them to build the team they wanted. Theres no reason why with proper planning they can’t plan around those bad cap years. There’s lots of really good teams that are contenders and don’t spend right up to the cap. The challenge now is to find value contracts and transition cheap ELC players into the lineup over the next couple years.
-
Yea I think they could have safely moved back and still gotten their guy. Could have snagged another high end D man like Strbak or Dragicevic. Oh well I like how high they were on Willander. They didn’t even wanna risk two spots. Shows how much they valued him over any player left on their list.

Interesting when looking at the players that have gone unsigned so far. Foote, Comtois, and Gadjovich. Could very well be that these guys just aren’t in demand but you gotta think at this point teams would be given a heads up if any of these guys were involved. I thought it was strange that Foote was let go by Nashville considering where they’re at. I hope he wasn’t involved. Last thing we need is more distractions involving one of our coaches and his son.

Can’t count the amount of times a really good D man has been available in the 2nd round and we pick a forward or an off the board D man… -

Not a fan of wannabe insiderzz with weak sources. Shes already proven she’s not a professional and holds petty grudges against former employers. Don’t know why people keep posting tweets from that scrub internet “journalist”. -

Wonder who she proposed we take in the 2022 draft… Jagger Firkus? Easy to see why she’s not employed by an NHL team anymore. -
