  1. One of the first tasks of the new coaching staff is teaching them how to get pucks to the net. Never seen a team struggle so much at that.
  2. Don’t know why they removed the white. Doesn’t look as good to me.
  3. Wish they would give him one more home game so the fans can show their appreciation. Maybe one last “Bruce, there it is!” chant?!
  4. I mean Boudreau was hired before Green was let go. I don’t think that part is that uncommon when it comes to mid season coaching changes. Unlike the media I don’t wanna see an interim here, especially if it’s Yeo. If you’re gonna change the coaching staff, clean house all at once. It takes time to line up all the replacements though, which I’m fine with. The more they delay the change the more losses which is what we need right now.
  5. I think his “success” under the Gillis regime makes him believe he’s a much smarter more capable hockey ops guy than he is. Problem is since then he’s done nothing but hurt this teams chances to build an actual contender.
  6. Yea I mean where there’s smoke there’s fire. Aquaman has a long history of being accused of meddling. He didn’t get that for no reason. This is just more bad optics. Whether he actually needed to sign off on the coach or it was just a casual meet and greet who knows? But it’s not gonna stop fans from speculating that he’s still calling all the shots. Either way I think fans were hoping that the hiring of Rutherford would mean Aqualini would be way more hands off. This doesn’t seem like an owner that’s hands off. Hes still putting himself in every part of the process.
  7. Doesn’t Aquilini have other businesses to run? Like why does he have so much time to fly around and meet coaches? Is that not why he hired Rutherford? Its pretty obvious the other brothers handle the actual business and they just gave the team to Frankie as his play thing. I don’t think he could run a McDonalds let alone a hockey team. I really hope the team starts losing money and the other brothers take notice. Maybe they finally say enough is enough and remove him as chairman.
  8. Will be interesting to see if they go full penguin and hire Jacques Martin too. Tocchett, Housley, and Martin would definitely be the defensive minded coaches they’re probably looking for.
  9. The thing about Tocchett is he played so long and has been around as a coach so he has a lot of connections. That is important when it comes to building. He’s played under everyone from Keenan to Bowman, and has played with current coaches around the league, and more importantly he’s played with legendary players that may be willing to come in as his assistant. So connections do matter. My bigger concern is that the building of this team is showing no creativity or signs that we’re trying to build something new. Seems like JR and co are trying to recreate the environment that existed in Pittsburgh. Like these people won as assistants surely they can win as the head people right? Except their success had more to do with the players on the ice, which needs to be the main focus right now.
  10. He was in Arizona for 4 years, thats usually the shelf life for coaches. Im gonna assume his contract was up and they wanted to do yet another rebuild with cheaper coaches. As for them falling off, that’s what happens with an organization that is unable to spend to be competitive. Again you can’t judge a coach in that environment. As for being cup adjacent, I sort of agree. However you can’t deny he played some role in that cup win. He was clearly responsible for some of their systems that won back to back cups. And surely he’s learned something along the way. We’ll see if his success as an assistant can be translated to head coach in an environment where they’re actually trying to win. Some assistants, like Yeo just don’t make good head coaches. It takes a very strong personality and ability to connect and I don’t think Yeo has that. He’s an X’s and O’s guy.
  11. All that matters is the players like him, or at the very least are willing to buy in to what he’s preaching. If he’s hated by the players and there’s an immediate tuning out, there’s not chance. The fact that he had players playing hard and buying in in Arizona tells me he knows how to connect to players on some level as a head coach.
  12. Defintely, and that’s all you can ask. I mean it’s either gonna work and JR will look like a genius or it’s gonna blow up in spectacular fashion. If it blows up, well I guess we’re going full rebuild. Which might have been the trajectory regardless of what coach we chose.
  13. I’m not gonna use his coaching record from Arizona as a fair example. No coach can work miracles with a team that has no interest in winning. He won two cups as an assistant so it’s not like he doesn’t know what he’s doing. Also one as a player. That’s more cups than our last three coaches have combined. My concern is more to do with playing style. If Rutherford wants this team to play like the Cup winning Pens he’s got a ton of work to do.
  14. I could see Phil Housley getting the call. He was Tocchett’s assistant in Arizona. Also assistant to Trotz for one season. Would probably be a good mentor to Hughes. Similar player in his day.
  15. No absolutely not! They do that and we’ve gone full Oilers! No more hiring ex player to fill vital roles. Hire the best of the best. The reason we’re in this mess is because JR decided to hire his buddies rather than objectively looking for the best GM available. They need to hire a president who doesn’t just mail it in and can make objective decisions. Until we do that we won’t have success.
  16. All of those things I listed are much more of a locker room cancer than betting on games. And that’s not the way you motivate rookies to play better. That’s so cringey and bush league. Its obvious Babcocks success was a product of him coaching a legendary team, not because of his coaching abilities. The fact that players who won cups with him hate his guts tells you all you need to know.
  17. Babcock? The guy who Franzen called the worst person he ever met? The guy who denied Chelios a milestone game because he was ego tripping? The guy who tried to call out a rookie and embarrass him in front of his teammates? Not sure you’re the best judge of character…
  18. Exactly. Bruce was successful when he had Shaw running the D. Having Cull run them makes him look like a crappy coach, which he isn’t. Same thing with Baumer and Green. Although I’m not convinced Green was that good. But yes Tocchett like Boudreau will either look bad or good based on who we hire to run the D and the pk. If it’s more of the same he won’t have a chance.
  19. Is there anybody you haven’t said that about? Also think about our owners character. You’re really expecting him to care?
  20. Well that was fun being a top team for a little bit. Great time to suck again when they’re hosting the Grey Cup next year…
  21. I’ll give him a chance even though I don’t think he’s gonna work with this group. I think they’re gonna need to overhaul a lot of the team if they want the team to match his style. If he has been hired I’m very interested to see who his assistants will be. That will be the biggest moves that will determine whether it works. We cannot be going with more rookies and scrubs like Yeo. We need legit assistants with track records of top special teams and defensive systems.
  22. Yep different situation when you have a legit shot at the cup. And I would imagine a trade involving any one of those prospects would require an extension in place.
