I’m not celebrating it but sometimes you have to take a step back to go forwards. I’ve been a fan long enough to know that. Too many fans want instant gratification and don’t see that building a perennial contender is a long process of success and failures. If you want to be winning in March when it matters then adding another elite young center will go a looong ways in accomplishing that.

I could see him matching that 107 point Bure season but 110 is just out of reach most likely unless he has another 5 point game in him. -

Any player outside of maybe Bedard and Fantilli are gonna take at least 3 years to make an impact in the league. What’s the difference? Absolutely I would wait that long. Believe it or not you don’t just stop building a team because fans think we’re a playoff team. Having an impact player on a cheap contract when we’re likely to have limited cap space is crucial. -

And clearly you’re the guru of the draft here. -

Anybody who knows anything about this draft knows that past the projected top 3 there’s no set order. There’s a strong case for any of Benson, Michkov, or Smith to go 4-6. I honestly wouldn’t even be surprised if Carlsson got bumped to 4 by someone like Benson. Either way this draft has a crazy good top 6. And we’d be lucky to get in that spot. -

No way you can possibly know that. If you knew as much as you pretend to know where he’ll go you’d know that scouts are worried about his three year deal in Russia and some rumoured attitude problems. Both of which aren’t concerns for me. Claiming that he’s “gone by 4” is laughable. Scouts that get paid alot more and know more than us think he has a high chance of dropping. You really think teams don’t strongly consider Benson and Smith ahead of him? Of course they do. -

I’ve already stated time and time again that Michkov has a real chance of slipping. Many top scouts believe he could step in and be an impact player in 3 years similar to Kaprizov. -

Teams don’t just go from non playoff team to contender though that’s not realistic. Even if we make it next season there’s likely gonna be a few runs before we ultimately break though. That’s true for even the best cup teams. I see this team being a contender in a few years IF everything goes well. By then we’re gonna need more firepower in the pipeline. -

Yes and another star to make us even more deadly. That’s all I’ve ever been arguing. It’s about adding not tearing down. Petey and Hughes are the best young players that this team has ever seen but there can always be more. That’s like Colorado saying we’ve already got Sakic we don’t need a Forsberg. Of course they did. Every great team has a very good one two punch. Petey and Miller are that now but when this team is ready to contend I see Miller as a good support player. We need that other gamebreaker that can step up when Petey is getting shut down. This draft represents the best chance we’re gonna get to get that player in that window. That’s all I’m rooting for. -

Sure good players have been drafted there. How successful has this franchise been at finding players in that range? I’ll give you a hint, not very… The reason we’ve got a good young core is largely based on drafting in the 5-7 range (Petey and Hughes). That’s the type of players we need to keep adding to this core and that doesn’t mean rebuild. That’s the false thinking that has gotten this team into the trouble it’s in. They get a decent team and just stop building the future thinking that they need to go all in. Ultimately they end up not being good enough and having no help for the future. If we can nab a player like Michkov he’ll likely be ready to step in and make an impact in three years. That’s about the time this team should be ready to contend if all goes well. Adding another star right as we’re beginning to peak would be invaluable. Enough to even put us over the top. -

Tank is still alive and well if we can land in that 6-9 range. At those spots we at least have a chance at the top two and if not then maybe a top player like Michkov slips. That’s what this has always been about. Some people can’t seem to grasp anything other than Bedard or bust though.
