I’d rather him off the books and off the team. A few games isn’t gonna change my opinion of him. He has low hockey IQ no matter what system he plays in. We need all available cap space for a legit top four D man and a third line center. We can’t afford the “luxury” of having a 6 million dollar d man on the third pair.

[Report] Tony DeAngelo suspended 2 games
DeNiro replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in General Hockey Discussion
Should be 10 games minimum for any intent to injure with a stick whether it be to the face, midsection, or other parts. One thing if it was just reactionary in the heat of the moment, completely different when a player has time to think about what they’re gonna do. -
Hey I was confused too. I was like wait how are we buyers right now? Why are we trading picks whose value aren’t even set? Why are we making a move that will improve our team and hurt our draft position? I understand their confusion but a lot of it is based around them believing that this team is a bottom 10 team. Management obviously doesn’t believe that. If they’re challenging for the 2nd or 3rd spot in the division next season nobody would be questioning the move.

I don’t think any of those professionals questioned the level of player Hronek is though. It was more so the timing for the Canucks being where they are in the standings. Its up to management now to build up a team that makes this move make sense. The idea that at 25 Hronek is done developing though it’s kinda crazy. And even if he stays at his current level isn’t that a pretty good D man? I think they’re probably hoping that this is his ceiling because if it’s not and those picks don’t pan out the trade could look much different.

I mean yea you have every right to believe that and I couldn’t fully argue against it. But after all it was Bettmans NHL that allowed the Oilers to draft McDavid. So you never know. Odds are we won’t win but I still want us in the best position possible that if we don’t win we’re still in that 4-7 range. Until those cards flip over I’m gonna keep holding onto hope though.

The odds are overwhelmingly in favour of getting a star player there. You can list guys like Yakupov and Stefan but those guys are the extreme outliers. Bedard is breaking records that have stood for decades and is on the same pace that McDavid played at in junior. When I say maybe I don’t mean maybe. He will be an elite player.

Except you don’t have to say anything about the draft. All you say to them is look we know you guys are studs and wanna play every minute, but for these last 19 games we’re gonna dial back your minutes and see what some of these younger guys can do. If these guys see that it’s about developing a supporting cast for them then they’ll understand. It shouldn’t be the goal to play them this many minutes anyways. Hughes looked completely depleted by the halfway point of the season. He needs guys that can take some minutes off his hands.

It’s true. Edmonton has the top two centers in the league and I’m not convinced that they’ll win a cup. That being said with the Canucks I think they have a Selke level center in Pettersson. Pair that with a next level offensive player and it could be a very potent 1-2. it’s all about balance, something Edmonton has never had.

Sorry but you’re a “keyboard warrior” too. Don’t pretend like you’re above people on here somehow. A professional organization that has done nothing but lose for a decade is the basis of what good decisions are? Don’t get blinded by the fact that Aquilini is still very much driving the decisions of this organization. He’s barely qualified to run a blueberry farm let alone a professional sports team.

I’d be more than happy with any of the projected top 5. Bedard would give us a potential generational talent that would give us one of the most potent 1-2 in the league. Fantilli would be the quintessential second line center behind Petey and might even make us a better overall team. He’s that great mix of size and two way ability and snarl. Carlsson similar to Fantilli would give us a good balance of two way ability and size down the middle and the Swedish factor makes it a perfect fit. And then Michkov and Benson are elite in their own right. Definitely a tier lower and the size factor could be an issue. Even though Bedard is smaller I feel like he’ll have no problem adjusting. These two might. I think even at 6 or 7 Michkov could very well fall. That’s why staying in the top 5 is key. That’s who my realistic hope would be if we don’t win the lotto.

Games now don’t carry into next year though that’s a fallacy. Getting into a rhythm when he’s about to be off for 5 months accomplishes nothing. All it does is raise the risk that he’s not healthy for summer training. Everything will start fresh come training camp. Learning to win and play hard now when there’s no points on the line isn’t setting them up for anything. Until the pressure of winning is actually on they won’t be able to start to actually build. Not to mention the roster will likely look much different come training camp so any chemistry or momentum will be reset next season regardless.

Systems and playing hard are great. Managing ice time and load management for Demko doesn’t change that. Of course these players want to play every single minute. It’s up to management and the coaching staff to keep focused on long term goals though. How would you feel if Hughes sustained a serious injury from playing 28 minutes a night? Or if Demko re-aggravated something from playing too many games in a row after coming back from a serious injury? I don’t see these games as accomplishing anything people claim they’ll accomplish. This team could be a much different team next season anyways. Training camp is where the real work will begin.

Gee what have been our most successful runs during this franchises history? When we drafted Trevor Linden 2nd overall and when we drafted the Sedins 2nd and 3rd overall. It’s not a coincidence that when you draft those players at the top of the draft they change the trajectory of the team. You can pretend that Hughes and Pettersson are all the star power we need, but looking at teams that actually win the cup they have those players and then some. Why with 19 games left would you actively try and distance yourselves from those players? So that we can all feel good and pretend like this wasn’t one of the worst seasons in franchise history? It’s insanity. But I’ll be here when everyone is whining that we don’t have enough star power to hang with the top teams. I’m sure these garbage games will make all the difference though.
