I said I don't know what his ceiling is, it could be anything. I'm not putting any sort of guess what it could be. Not "conflating" anything, you're just confused. If you wanna talk about Gaudette stop trying to drag on an argument about Juolevi.
-
Right now I wouldn't say his projected ceiling is a number 1, it's too early to tell. Hence the question mark. Not confusing anything.
-
Yep, but we already have an abundance of those. If we're drafting one top 10 we need to make sure he becomes a number 1.
-
Of course it is, most D-men's ceilings are. At this point he could end up anywhere from an elite number 1 to just a solid 3-4 guy. So much has to go right in a defenseman's development for them to become a true number 1.
-
Wow, plug is a little harsh, don't you think? I would say it's more a case of his ceiling being a big question mark right now.
-
Nothing to complain about with Gaudette. He's more than exceeded expectations.

Some people are just living in denial I think, I used to do the same thing. I'd defend the pick year after year until that player finally busted. Not gonna do that any more. Despite hiring a scout GM it appears this team still struggles with taking the best players available. Until they fire the scouts who have made bad picks for us for the last 10 years, nothings gonna really change.

Matthew Tkachuk had almost identical point per game totals in his draft year that Bertuzzi had in his draft +2 year. The era had nothing to do with it. There's players still putting up well over a hundred points in junior. Bertuzzi had a player on his team put up 124 points in his best year, Tkachuk had a player (Dvorak) put up 121 points in his draft year. I'll never understand why we passed on him. There's some very basic rules about drafting that any average hockey fan knows. If there's a London Knight forward in the top 10 you take them. Similarly if there's a Halifax Moosehead forward or a Kelowna Rockets D-man you take them. These are powerhouse programs. Benning overthought these picks plain and simple.
-
Except that for every Bertuzzi there's dozens of powerforwards that couldn't put it all together. Bertuzzi's junior numbers were also far superior to Virtanen's. Not many players with his junior numbers tend to go on to be top NHLers.
-
Everyone uses Bertuzzi as an example, but unfortunately Bertuzzi was a rare breed that doesn't come around too often. I hope Virtanen develops into the next Bert, but it ain't gonna happen. Bertuzzi had very underrated playmaking ability and brought a nastiness to his game that Virtanen just doesn't have. There are way more powerforward busts than there are success stories. There's a reason why they're worth so much, it's because the ones that actually develop into top players are rare. I just hope Benning doesn't get too focused on size and hitting going forward when it means passing on better players. Big guys that can skate can always be found in later rounds.
-
Not calling him a bust. I think he'll be an NHLer, but not as a top 6 scorer. Size and speed don't mean much if you don't know how to use them consistently and effectively. Passing on highly ranked scorers for project players in not something this team can afford to do right now though. Everyone on here knew Ehlers and Tkachuk would be top 6 scorers, where Juolevi and Virtanen end up right now is anyones guess.
-
Ehlers had a much lower chance of busting based on his abilities and draft year numbers. I think most people saw him as a sure fire top 6 player before the draft. Maybe Virtanen would be better somewhere else, but I don't see his centerman being the problem. I see his engagement in games, his knowing where to be on the ice, and his work ethic as the problem right now. Sure those things can improve, but right now those things remind me alot of Kassians game early on here. We need more than that out of a 6th overall pick.
-
Grabner was one dimensional, Hodgson couldn't skate, and Schroeder was too small. Ehlers had a much more complete game than them and is a great skater. He also put up very impressive draft year numbers that projected him to be a top 6 scorer.
-
Meanwhile Ehlers is top 15 in NHL scoring at age 20. Sorry but there's no defending this pick anymore. If drafting 4th liners with a top 10 pick is considered a success, our drafting has really gotten bad. Bottom line is Ehlers and Nylander represented what this team needed, which was highly skilled players that could help replace the Sedins production. For a guy that is a career scout, I'm amazed that he passed on things like elite hockey IQ and speed for a one dimensional player with size. Even if those guys don;t fit with what you're trying to build, they're always going to have more value in a future trade than a third line banger.

Would love to see Boeser work out with Horvat in the summer if he goes pro. Perfect young guy to show him how to train like a pro. Plus they could get a jump start on building chemistry.
-
And on the 11th goal Juolevi picks up a point! He's gonna be the next Lidstrom!!
-
I'm fishing for pluses by pointing out Juolevi didn't have any points? Trust me I didn't plan on getting pluses for that. I didn't say it was a big deal, just surprising. It would be like Edler going pointless in a game where the Canucks scored 8. I think that would be pretty unlikely. Which makes me wonder if Vande Sompel has taken his powerplay time. You're making a bigger deal out of my post, than I even made about Juolevi. If anything this just shows how sensitive Canuck fans are towards any level of criticism towards our prospects.
-
He does do that which is great. People seem to be under the assumption that I'm complaining about him not having points in this game. I'm simply saying I'm shocked that he is not on the score sheet. It seems like it would be a hard thing to do in a game like that.
-
Yes I have different opinions on different subjects. Crazy right? Sometimes it's criticism or what you call "whining", and sometimes it's pumping prospects tires. And sometimes it's somewhere in the middle. It's better than being someone who always hypes or someone who only ever complains. You seem to be fishing for pluses from other posters right now though, so I'm gonna stop. Try and stay on subject and talk about Juolevi
-
If you have followed what I post for more than a second you would see I actually do the opposite. I usually hype prospects more than anything, but thanks for coming out.
-
Wow, way to exaggerate what I was saying completely. Just pointing out that there's been 4 games this season that the Knights scored 7 or more and Juolevi had 0's across his stat line. That surprising to me when you consider the minutes he normally gets. Just wondering if Vande Sompel is getting some of his prime minutes. But go ahead and whine about my "whining".
-
Again the Knights put up 7+ goals and Juolevi doesn't show up on the score sheet. I'm not even sure how that happens. A game like this he should have at least 2 points if he's being played prime minutes. Meanwhile their new acquisition Vande Sompel is having a 3 point game. I guess he's getting Juolevi's prime minutes now.

Players drafted top 10 find a way to produce no matter what teams they're on. You don't think Ehlers would be lighting up the AHL right now? We need to stop, making excuses for this guy. I only hope they learn from their mistakes in the future. Hockey IQ should be at the forefront of players they draft. You can't simply be wowed by a players skating and physical play. Those kinds of players can be found in later rounds. We need to be taking elite offensive talent with top 10 picks. Tkachuk was my guy. Him and Boeser would have been great playing alongside Horvat. And yes Juolevi could potentially be that number 1 D-men we've been looking, but Tkachuk was a lock to be a top 6 player, something we also need badly. I don't think this team can afford to role the dice on potential right now. They need the sure things, and I don't think Virtanen or Juolevi represented that. That's ,my thoughts anyways, I hope I'm wrong about both.
-
Demko has as many points than Zalewski... What happened to that guy?
-
Yep, people need to stop defending this pick. If he wasn't from BC we wouldn't have taken him, and he probably would have gone outside the top 10. What concerns me is that Benning is continuing to make the same mistake of not taking best player available. We can't keep getting top 10 picks and failing to address our need of top 6 scorers. People can sugar coat the Virtanen and Juolevi picks all they want, but the bottom line is this team would be much better off if it had Ehlers and Tkachuk in the lineup right now. I'm just hoping Virtanen can make the big show at some point, but my expectations have been lowered quite a bit. I'll be happy if he becomes a good third liner.
