I think Friesen will get the nod if McCann goes. He's earned it. We've seen what Vey brings. I doubt his game has changed that much. He's too soft on the puck. Friesen on the other hand brings the same level of effort Biega does.

Starting in Utica next season should benefit him. I actually think Horvat could use some time down there, but obviously that's not gonna happen.
-
I can see the argument for McCann staying. He's producing and we lack center depth. But we don't need Virtanen on the team right. Especially not as a pressbox guy. He needs to be playing every single game to improve.

This mojo. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X7hMWHUg4Rw They're rushing him right now. And he's not gonna get any momentum going if he's in and out of the lineup every other game.

0's across the board tonight for Jake. No big hits or anything. I know he's just coming back from injury, but if he can't make an impact at this level right now, he needs to go play in the world juniors. We have other players that can swap in and out of the lineup if that's the role they want for him. After he comes back from the world juniors, they can slot him in again and see where he's at. If he hasn't got his mojo back, send him back to junior.

It was a backhander as he was falling: http://www.undsports.com/mediaPortal/player.dbml?id=4809701&db_oem_id=13500 He now has the most goals by a freshman in the first half of the season since Travis Zajac though.

Boeser with his 12th on a breakaway!

Most players in the SHL have an out clause for the NHL I believe. So yes, if he's signed he could come over right away.

Panarin is a shifty playmaker like Kane. Rodin has developed into a sniper not unlike Vrbata. He has obviously worked on his shot, because I don't remember it ever being as deadly accurate as it has been this season. If his two way game has been refined and he's NHL ready, I see him being a good replacement for Vrbata after the deadline.

Rough game for Demko. BC had a 3-1 lead and ended up losing 4-3 after a goal was scored with 22 seconds remaining. He stopped 39 of 43 shots though.

Big body guys that go to the net create more space for the skill guys which increases scoring chances. Replacing Higgins with Gaunce would be a good thing IMO.

Brisebois team won't be making the playoffs. They probably want him in Utica once his season is over.

Do you honestly think that's all they do? These rankings are produced by a large group of scouts that watch players numerous times throughout the season. They have more insight into these players than the average fan who simply calls picks bad a year after they're drafted.
-
I mean it was somewhat obvious. Benning clearly likes a certain type of player. Guys that play hard with an edge to their game. To me it was either between him or Ritchie in Bennings mind. Virtanen's speed and the fact that he's a local boy probably tipped the scales in his favor.
-
Why? He was ranked 6th among North American skaters. Clearly the scouts thought he was worthy of a top 10 pick. I'll take their word for it.
-
I'm not talking about players that are getting close to retirement. I'm talking about our young guys making names for themselves that other teams compare their future prospects to.
-
Until we have players that other teams compare their young players to we'll be dreamers.
-
We'd be lucky if either turned out anything close to Bergeron. Bergeron scored 30 goals and 73 points at age 20. I don't see that level of offense in Horvat or McCann. At least not until maybe their mid to late 20's.

The Comets have 5 games until the December 19th deadline for loaning players to the World Juniors. It will be interesting to see how long he stays with the Comets for.

I still think the NHL needs to add a rule where every team can have one player with exceptional status that can be sent to the AHL one year early. I think Virtanen would definitely benefit from playing in the AHL for awhile.
-
He's great at using his speed to get into the offensive zone. Where he's struggling is knowing what play to make when he gets there. That's something he needs to work on. Having him play in the AHL where the pace is a bit slower may be helpful. This is another reason I want him to go to the World Juniors. He needs to slow down the game in his head. Right now he seems to be rushing plays a bit too much.

Minus the shoulder surgery.

I want leaders that lead on and off the ice like the Sedins. I don't care how friendly they are off the ice. If these guys were such great mentors you would think our young guys would be benefiting from it. So far I see guys like Virtanen, Baertschi, and Horvat struggling big time. And the message I've seen sent on the ice is to play dirty when you're losing, not stand up from your teammates, and only play hard for a fraction of games.
-
Outside of the Sedins I'm not seeing much veteran leadership right now. Unless they're trying to teach them how to be passengers on a team. Certain guys need to step up or get out of the way. There's players who are hungry who will actually play hard for their ice time.

Boeser, Virtanen, and McCann can all rip the puck. Once these guys gain the confidence to be difference makers, they should be fun to watch.
