  1. McCann is pretty skinny. He's gonna have to bulk up quite a bit too in the next few years.
  2. Everyone knows Alf is from Melmac.
  3. The good thing is a big guy like Tryamkin should benefit from the smaller ice. It will give forwards less time and space to get away from him.
  4. I would say that in the case of most players, but you have to look at each player individually. You have to ask if they're physically and mentally mature enough to handle the NHL. In Virtanen's case I would say he's physically ready, but it's hard to say if he's mentally ready though. He may need more coaching still at the lower levels in order to round out his game. The thing about Virtanen is he can play a fourth line role with no pressure. Play a simplified game like Horvat did last season, and slowly learn the ropes as he goes. That may be the right route for him, it may not be. It's up to management and the coaching staff to determine that.
  5. It's funny how everyone focuses on his arms, when you're right it's more about his leg and core strength. That's what will make the difference. You look at smaller skilled guys in the NHL and it's not like they have big bulky arms. They do however typically have legs the size of tree trunks though. That's what Hunter should be focusing on.
  6. I think it's really something Canucks are trying to encourage. I think back to when Burrows, Bieksa, and Kesler, and Raymond, Hansen, and Schneider were all buddies on the Moose. It makes me happy to think these guys could all be the future core of our team.
  7. Well that depends on him. He says he wants to come over after this season. But if he has a breakout year and establishes himself as a top young player over there, his team may be willing to offer him a big contract. If that's the case he'll have to decide whether to take a big payday, or sign an ELC with the Canucks for less money. If he is serious about playing in the NHL, I would think he starts in Utica after this season and then they take it from there. There will be spots available on the Canucks blueline, but he'll have to prove he can transition to North American hockey.
  8. Well if Datsyuk is his NHL comparable then I think he'll need another 25-30 lbs at least. 190-195 with a good skating ability would likely be ideal.
  9. That would be unreal if he lit up the Q and was a 1.5 PPG player this season. That would catapult him up the depth chart pretty quick.
  10. Chara is the definite model for Tryamkin. Not only because of their size and where they were drafted, but the fact that both were considered long term project players. Chara definitely had similarities. A big guy with an awkward skating style that took awhile to grow into his body. He didn't really start to develop his offensive game until he was 24-25, and only recently had a career year at age 35. The Canucks brass have told Tryamkin they want him to play nastier ala Chara. He's not a big fighter, probably because players don't wanna fight a guy who's 6'8". I think as he becomes more comfortable playing in a men's league, he'll develop that aspect of his game. It's alot different fighting junior players than it is fighting physically mature men. We'll see if the KHL route pays off. Chara went the WHL route and then onto the AHL, and it took him a few years to adjust. Tryamkin is playing at an even higher level than the AHL right now. If that creates a more rounded player or not, we'll have to wait and see.
  11. I think that's what they're banking on. If he plays the way he does at that size, imagine if he can pack on 25 lbs over the next 3 or 4 years. Then we've got a player on our hands.
  12. He has all the tools for sure. The next few years will be critical though. The Canucks want him to be more physical and play the body more, and from the sounds of it, he's doing what they asked. His skating and positioning will need to continue to improve, as well as his offensive awareness. But I think he's being developed slowly in the KHL and taught how to play the right way. With a few good years of development, the sky's the limit for him.
  13. No, there's a different set of rules for players playing overseas. We'll hold his rights until he decides to come over (or not).
  14. He's not ready for the NHL yet. His talents are still way too raw. I'd rather him develop over there in the second best league in the world, and come to North America ready to jump right into the NHL.
  15. There's something about playing with better players that elevates a players game though. It's nice that he's going to be "the guy" on a bad team, but at some point it would be nice for him to be traded to one of the top teams. Get the experience of playoff hockey.
  16. Bure was also in amazing physical shape though, even when he was young. Zhuk has alot of hours to put in in the gym if he's gonna come close to being an NHLer.
  17. Yep. The one that looks like he's 7.
  18. Shinkaruk took most of the season in Utica to find his groove after going through hip surgery and being a bit behind. In his final 13 games he had 8G and 4A. If he comes into training camp in great shape, I wouldn't rule him out. Baertschi isn't just gonna be handed a top 6 role, he has to earn it. It's one thing to develop prospects slowly, but if they show they're ready then you have to give them an opportunity. Nothing worse than doing everything coaches and management wants and still getting sent down. That is one of the reasons Baertschi's development was slowed. Virtanen won't be given a free ride because of where he was drafted either. These guys are going to have to battle it out for the limited spots available.
  19. Everyone forgets how close Shinkaruk was to making the team. The thing holding him back was strength and conditioning, which was hindered by his offseason hip surgery. He's definitely a guy that could fly under the radar in training camp. He could challenge Baertschi for that top 6 winger spot.
  20. I know luck is part of the game. But the percentage of times that a play like that happens at that time in the game is very low. Just saying they're very lucky to have the lead right now.
  21. Okay, that's just lucky. Routine play the guy makes 9 times out of 10 and he throws wide.
  22. It's kind of baffling Korostelev fell that far actually. Good skater with good size and puck handling who put up decent numbers for the sting. They definitely got a good player at that spot. The Leafs had a good draft overall actually. Getting Marner, Dermott, Bracco, Timashov, and Desrocher. Smart picks later on especially.
  23. Good to see. He's gonna need a whole lot of this training to get to the next level. Right now he doesn't look like an athlete, he looks like someone's kid brother.
