[Report/Rumour] Elias Pettersson Contract Talks
DeNiro replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I doubt that injury will affect his future contract much. Hockey is a different animal though. Concussions regularly end NHL careers. All it takes is one dirty hit and a player might never be the same. -
[Signing] Maple Leafs re-sign Auston Matthews
DeNiro replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Just look at how TSN phrases this signing. Apparently Matthews is “ending Mackinnon’s run” as highest paid player. As if that’s some sort of victory for the Leafs. They’re so desperate for any sort of victory. -

Did the Angels make the worst gamble in MLB history holding onto their superstar who will walk for nothing? -

I wouldn’t laugh too much. The same thing could happen to us… Could have signed Petey long term for 9 million if we didn’t have incompetent management at the time. -
[Signing] Rangers re-sign Alexis Lafreniere

I mean they could still trade him. They’re probably giving him one more chance to establish himself as a top 6 though. -
Or he gave him the “courtesy” of making it look like he was killed and having him disappear…

[Report/Rumour] Elias Pettersson Contract Talks

I feel like a lot of this is just JP Barry calling the shots. Guy can’t do a negotiation without turning it into a big media circus. Guarantee they’re waiting out Matthews and his camp before thinking about signing. That contract will bring the ceiling for contracts up. -

Hey if he wants to make 12+ a season I say go out and prove you’re worth that. If he can up his level to the Mackinnon’s and Matthews of the league then I don’t think anyone will have a problem seeing him get paid. The risk for him though is say he only puts up 90ish points. No way is that getting you 12 million. Probably drops him back down to the 10-10.5 mil range. -
TSNs latest video has Poulin saying that the Canadian teams that make the playoffs besides the Oilers and Leafs (who they said were locks) were the Jets and the Sens. They didn’t even mention Vancouver, like not even as an afterthought.

A lil' bit of insight on our top prospect - Tom Willander

Not to mention a chance to play with the projected first overall pick. Can’t underestimate how much that factored in. -

Wonder if we could snag Pandolfo as an assistant here. Seems like a smart development coach with a strong pedigree and experience as an assistant already. Won a championship in his first role as a head coach too. Could be one to watch. -
(Report) Canucks 2023-24 Prospect Pool Overview - THN
DeNiro replied to RWJC's topic in Canucks Talk
Nope I don’t think we have the best pool not even close. But I also realize it doesn’t matter if you have the best ranked pool if you have quality prospects in every position that have a good shot at making the NHL. That’s only one part of the equation for building a contender though. Countless other things needs to go right. We’ve already drafted our foundational pieces in Petey, Demko, and Hughes. Pieces that all these teams with so called top ranked pools will still need to find if they want to build a top team. -

Nah you just need to realize that prospect pools are based on hype and junior players who most likely won’t become NHLers. Arizona also had a top pool based on Perlini and Strome. There is no way to project which teams will be contending in 5 years because so many other factors go into building a team. If it were as easy as having a top prospect pool a team like the Sabres would have been competing for the last decade. -

Zero truth to that. As I just pointed out Philly had the top ranked pool 6 years ago. How’d that go for them. Obviously having good prospects is important that goes without saying. But whether your pool is arbitrarily ranked 1 or 15 means nothing. -

I looked back at a ranking from 2017 just out of curiosity and Philly and Arizona were 1-2. Tells you what you need to know about prospect pool rankings. -
(Report) Canucks 2023-24 Prospect Pool Overview - THN
DeNiro replied to RWJC's topic in Canucks Talk
At the end of the day prospect pool rankings are pointless. No one can predict which prospects will make it and which won’t. And really that’s the only thing that matters with prospects. If a team has a bunch of hyped junior players all putting up 100+ points but none of them make it past the AHL what does it really matter? A prospect pool should be a ranked by how many players from that pool actually graduate to the NHL. But no analysts will actually go back and analyze that because it’s all based on hype and way too early projections. Would be interesting to go back to their pool rankings from 5-6 years ago and see how many of the top ranked teams actually had their prospects graduate. -

Same agent the Sedins had. He’s known for stretching things out as long as possible.
