  1. Who's to say they will? Just because you get 1st overall picks doesn't mean you'll be a good team. The players still have to gel, and teams need great role players to win. You can get great players late in the first round too. Just look at Perry and Kesler.
  2. Ducks didn't really do it. Perry and Getzlaf were later first round picks, and Niedermeyer and Pronger were acquire through a signing and a trade.
  3. So will he still watch every Canucks game? That just seems weird.
  4. At least we don't have to wait long to get excited again. Hopefully Gillis will be busy tomorrow.
  5. To be fair, Oilers fans would likely be having the same reaction if they didn't sign him. People are just disappointed because they built this guy up in their heads as a Bobby Orr, and now their just venting.
  6. If losing guaranteed a cup, the blue jackets would have several by now. The fact is, nothing guarantees a cup no matter how much talent you have. Alot still needs to go right. They could struggle to find a number 1 goalie for years, or all their D-men could be busts. At this point they're still very far from getting a cup.
  7. If you've watched Schultz play, his game is pretty similar. He'll struggle trying to fend off 200+ pound forwards. Connauton put up similar numbers to Schultz at the same age in college hockey. And he's been seasoned in the AHL for the last couple seasons, playing against much better talent. Connauton will surprise alot of people.
  8. The fact that the Red Wings (the best organization in the NHL), were the first ones out on Schultz, should say it all. You don't guarantee ice-time to players who don't deserve it. That just sends a bad message to everyone on your team. We haven't had highly touted prospects outside of Hodgson, and he was a prima donna. It's not AV's fault that the Canucks drafting up until recently has been pretty poor for the most part.
  9. 3.8 mil is cheap? The fact is, if we gave him top 4 minutes, he would be earning 3.8 million. Whether we deferred it to the following season or not, it's still alot of cap space for an unproven player. Edmonton has a ton of it so it makes sense for them. I would rather have Garrison at 4.5 mil, than Schultz at 3.8.
  10. The thing is, the Oilers needed Schultz. The Canucks don't. It should be fun seeing him play top 4 minutes on Edmonton's horrible d-core. Looks like another last place finish.
  11. Oh well. We'll save our cap space for proven players.
  12. Yep, so he's right on track to make the NHL in the same average time frame that it takes 75% of prospects to make the NHL.
  13. Nobody is saying it will. But my point was when Gillis says he wants his team to get bigger and stronger, bringing a 5'8" player into our top 6 kind of goes against that. And if we do do that, it kind of limits the areas in which we can upgrade in the size and toughness department.
  14. All of those teams you listed had big players in their lineups. They all had awesome forchecks. They all had third and fourth lines that were tough and produced offensively. They all had deep defence. They all had good goaltending. And all of their stars showed up in a big way. You say that they all won in different ways, but I would say they all pretty much won the same way. It's the same formula for every cup winning team. The only thing that changes is the style of play.
  15. Exactly. There's no substitution for size and toughness. Sure a smaller team can make it through to the finals. But when a skilled team like Vancouver met a team like Boston, they didn't have any answer to their size and grit. You've gotta have those weapons in your arsenal to be able to win different ways and be prepared for different opponents. Every single cup team since the beggining of the NHL has won the cup with the same formula: Hard work. I have no doubt Schroeder can work hard, the only thing he's going to have trouble with is battling 230 pound defenceman in the corners for the puck.
  16. The formula for winning the cup has never involved having a bunch of small players on your roster. You need size, you need toughness, and you need fearless players. Even the wings had a bunch of sandpaper mixed in with their skill.
  17. Adding Schroeder to the roster kind of goes against Gillis saying he wants to get bigger and stronger. I guess we can always upgrade in other positions though.
  18. Just because you're a great player and have leadership abilites does not mean you would make a good GM. There's alot more to being a GM than that. It takes alot of knowledge plus alot of negotiating skills to be a good GM. Gillis didn't just get lucky and win the job for GM. The guy is a lawyer and was a player agent for a long time. He's got a vast knowledge of how the inner workings of NHL organizations work. Linden does not.
  19. Well when you go to a bar, it's kind of expected you're gonna drink alcohol. Otherwise why even go?
  20. Shredder with a bomb tonight. I think he could really give a boost to our powerplay if he ever gets the call. He's a great passer, and he's got a heavy shot. Shreds goal is at 1:16
  21. Gillis did say he would give Schroeder a shot at some point this season. I don't know why he'd say that if he didn't plan on it. Maybe he figured we'd have more injuries, who knows.
  22. CDC's reaction: Kassian has a two point night: OMG Kassian's awesome, keep him on the second line AV! What a great trade! Kassian goes pointless the next night: Drop Kassian to the fourth line, he can't handle the pressure. Hodgson would have scored on that penalty shot.
  23. When our stars are slumping, you can't look at a couple rookies as the reason we're losing. Kassian is not going to win us games, to think that is to expect too much.
