I only want 1...Edler due to shorter term commitment. Myers to me is Edler 2.0 just in the right shot variety. So hell no to the idea of having both especially Myers locked up to at least edler $ for at least twice as long. Let another team overpay! When your about to sign off on Jim just think about L.E deal then get cold feet and back out haha!

What results do we have. EP looks stellar, he is also a high end pick, Jake...drafted just as high, seems to be a 3rd liner with a lower hockey iq that as of now hasn't shown he can play with the top 6 guys or hasn't earned the coaches trust to be put in that spot. Boat load of top end talent? Who do we have waiting in the wings that is NOT on the NHL roster...Podz? 2 years away then who? I dont see any high end talent in the A ready for a call up pounding on the door?

Our Goaltending stood on its head almost all of last year. Dont know how much more they can improve when they have a subpar D core infront of them

[Signing] Jordie Benn signs with Canucks

LE is not going to terminate his deal. Best bet is after July 1 he gets traded for another dud contract similar to the Gagner - Spooner deal. What about trading LE for Backes with a small sweetener or retention by us or Frans Nielson from Detroit? Or for James Neal and we get a mid round pick from Calgary? We add something and take Turris from nashville, they save 1 or 2 years of the same cap hit? Okposo from Buffalo, we add something? % retained for Victor Rask? for Z. Smith, helps Ottawa reach cap floor? Oh ya, guess I should mention Lucic if Edm retains 1m or gives us a prospect or 2nd round pick for the additional year. Should be able to move "Moppy" after his bonus is paid tomorrow, retained or full salary to help a team reach cap floor. -
If the rebuild is over, I sure dont hold my hopes too high on this team being competitive, we severely lack depth/skill in all areas still imo
-
we have waited years, JB has never addressed it, why get desperate now...to save his job!?
-
What dumb GM would give an aging Edler 8m!?!? We kind of overpaid in reality, gave him a 1m raise and full NMC. JB had Edler bent over knowing he wanted to stay, should have played hardball with him imo said here is 5m, 1 year NMC 2nd year 10 team NO trade list. Move on if you dont like it. In the end, thank god the Edler deal is only 2 years! Nice player, but its time to move on and create a full on new identity. our key D are still Edler and Tanev, same as when JB arrived...Here is hoping Quinn can have an impact next year and OJ can hopefully become a top 4 for us soon, if he can stay healthy

[Signing] Jordie Benn signs with Canucks

Might be a decent leader as well. Plus he can grow a nice beard...seems like many of the younger millenial generation can't do that for some reason haha! -

Definitely can be used out on the PK for sure -
Buffalo has gone out and trade for some RHD since the TDL. I know his plus minus is bad but that whole team is a wreck. He has put up solid offensive #s, he needs a steady 2 way D partner...could that be fellow countryman OJ? I would not anti up a ton to acquire him, especially after we have committed a 1st in the JT Miller trade. I would have thought making a trade for say Risto with a conditional 1st would have been higher on our team needs than a winger but we went that route instead. The Canucks have many holes still before they can be considered a competitive team in the NHL. D is the hardest position to improve, I would have really wished we targeted that via trade rather then potentially overpay Myers. I think with Edler re upping that will squash any chance of Gardiner coming here.

[Signing] Jordie Benn signs with Canucks

It could be a savvy signing, depending on the term and cap hit. Cheaper replacement of Hutton maybe? He had a decent year offensively, I sure hope it wouldn't cost much to sign him...like what he brings but like Edler we are just looking for fillers for the short term. in 2 years we are hoping Hughes and OJ are able to step into and do well in top 4 roles on our team. -
Not to hate on JB, but not sure why he deserves better. He took over a team that was over the hill and needed a full rebuild, we never got that. We needed to stock pile draft picks and trade away dead weight or older players, for the most part we did NOT do that. We spun our wheels trying to compete and gave out some bad UFA contracts when we should have stayed the course and rebuilt. We drafted some talented players, to then turn around and trade them before truly getting to see what they could bring at the NHL level or as they developed in a lower league. Trading picks for other teams dead weight sometimes worked out for us but in the situation the Canucks were in they should have done the opposite. JB has some talent when it comes to scouting and that is where he should be, when it comes to trades or contract negotiations he has not done well. I am disappointed that since he took over we have still lacked to improve our D, even a couple of our so called Lotto picks are TBD or might not live up to the hype of their draft selection. Other than the high 1st round picks, maybe add Gaudette but he is still raw in the NHL we have LACKED any success from rounds 2-7 to have made the leap into the NHL and be an impact player. Many teams have had players in those rounds that have made an impact and are core or soon to be core pieces going forward. I like Jim, but don't think he is suited to be the GM. Maybe elevate him to Trevor's old job, he can still have input on scouting and drafting. We seem to have a young, promising future GM potentially in Judd Brackett. Maybe give him the rains or move him into the AGM role and bring in an old Vet GM to run things for a couple years? No GM is going to make all the right moves to please all the fans. I just think since he has arrived, he has traded unnecessary picks, targeted some unnecessary UFA and given up on some young players too soon. If he has just been a puppet to the Aquilini's then I feel sorry for him. I think a change is needed at the helm, keep JB around but shuffle him into a different role

its a no brainer move for Schenn if its a cheaper contract being offered to him and likely 1 maybe 2 years term. Pays way less tax in Tampa, plus goes to a team who while being ousted in the 1st round...they have a much higher chance of making a push for a cup and at worst playing playoff hockey next year. Luke isn't a spring chicken, go with the best contract and best chance to win. I think it was a nice showing for him here, but would he be able to play that way over a full season? He was basically on his way out of the league until we got him...maybe we saw the best of Luke in that short window of games?
-
That's why our D is still dreadful right? He has not gone out and made an impactful trade to acquire a reliable D capable of playing in the top 4. I guess you will be happy when he overpays for an overhyped Tyler Myers? We were better off trading for Subban, Miller, Ristolainen or sign a different D to fill in as a top 4 than overpaying Myers who will NOT be worth his contract
-
aside from last year he has been a consistant 40 pt plus player, closer to 50ish. Can be a net front presence on the PP, stands up for teammates. I dont want to overpay him but I think he could be a nice filler piece while providing leadership, scoring and grit. I just hope we dont go after anyone for a big $ or long term contract. We have enough negative $$$ or dead cap hit as it is, dont need to add to it.

1 word- Soft!

I would like Simmonds to play on that wing, but because he didnt score 20-30G in his contract year everyone thinks he is washed up. I think due to his down year he wont command the term or higher $ that he might have. Could be a good player for Jake to watch as well, brings an element of physicality that we all know we need. Ferland is the other choice, but I would be hesitant, who knows the crazy term or $ he might want. Lee is also a guy I wouldnt want to go long term with and with the JT Miller trade I don't think the LW position is an area we need to address. A D would be ideal or a veteran RW like Simmonds on a 2-3yr year deal might be a great fit for our team. I have always been a Simmonds fan, just my 2 cents but I think he will want to go to a contender vs a younger team like ours but you never know. Hope JB would at least call to gauge his interest. Think he would do well on our PP and fit nice with our young top 6

the cost wasn't horrible. Ideally you try to get him for less considering Tampa was trying to shed salary to sign Point and maybe Pavelski. The issue I have and many probably do is we have been a basement team for a while, our Goalie last year played unreal, can he do that consistantly though? The big pick is the * attached to that pick. If we don't make the playoffs next year, which I don't think is going to be easy then its an automatic 1st in 2020. If we get a key injury or 2 that pick could be a lotto pick ala Ottawa Senators this draft. That...is why this deal has some are uneasy over that deal. The Canucks have needed to improve their D since Jim got here, trying to over pay Myers is not going to fix it. In my opinion, I think with Tanev's injury history we should try to sign him to a short extension, maybe he takes a discount or same salary as he makes now? I would rather have Tanev here for a 2-4 more years than Myers for 6-7 years at 6-7m per. I was hoping we could maybe swing a deal like Hutton's rights for Burakovksy's before July 1. Could have been a complimentary winger in our top 6/9. Just like what Colorado is hoping for.
-
With Miller gone, Ristolainen is the only real D I see us strongly considering. We need a point producing D and a right shot aint bad either! We dont need anymore lefties, maybe a veteran bottom pair guy on a short term deal. Personally I think we should have targeted a D with that "disposable" 1st round pick and just went and signed a UFA winger for scoring depth. I like JT just not the price tag, considering we really need D and have since JB took over and he hasn't really done much to address it...via trade anyway.
-
we should be targeting Risto imo, might have a nice Finnish tandem in the not so distant future with him and OJ. We are clearly trying to go fro it or as I call it our GM trying to save his job so might as well trade more picks or assets to get a top 4 D who can put up points...only needed that for ages

[Buyout] Canucks buy out Ryan Spooner
86Viking replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
1 down many duds still to discard off the team, thats what happens when you sign a bad UFA, trade him for a project and it doesnt work out. Stay clear of Myers at 6m plus please JB! -
why did colorado pay this price? Andre was out of favour and very likely not going to get qualified by Washington.

[Report] Ben Hutton to become UFA
86Viking replied to BertaNuck's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I dont care what our D situation was this past season, our GM should have known he wasn't willing to pay Hutton his arbitration rate and he should has moved Ben at the TDL for a draft pick. This screams PISS POOR asset management, only cements it in stone that JB is not the right guy for the job. I am glad the owners have note extended him, he doesnt deserve it. He is trying to save his job with the JT trade and who knows what else in FA on July 1. Best of luck Ben, your not worth 4m imo, your a great #5 fringe #4 D in the NHL.
