[Report] Canucks fire Jim Benning, name Stan Smyl as interim GM
DefCon1 replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Canucks Talk
Our D is pretty slow and we deploy pylons like ChaseOn, Hunt and Poolman. There is no way a cup contending team has those guys on their team. I thought everyone saw what we lacked when we went on that Florida road trip, we werent even close. -

They are an easy re-up, as they wont cost much. Highmore will sign for 800K, same with Lammiko. We should re-sign Motte unless JR can get a 1st round pick for him. One player that Canucks should trade in TDL is Pearson and the other is Dickenson. -

The return HAS to be more than a late 1st pick which is lower in value than what we traded. Kt has to be a 1st, blue chip prospect and another good prospect just to outbid other teams. Miller is a 1st line forward with term and a low cap hit. There is no player like him available and he is also in his prime. The value of Miller should be a high premium. I take a 1st, Schneider, Ottoman/Lunkvist. That should be the asking price. Any less than that, should be met with stern NO. -

The question will be that if we are making a cup contending team, would choosing Boeser over Miller be a correct choice. If its about cap space, Boeser will be cheaper but not by much but will his contribution ever be the same as Miller? Miller has been our best player so I hope they are not trading him for small pieces as we need building blocks. If Miller was to be traded to the Rangers I would definitely want Schneider, Ottoman, 1st as the main pieces coming back and maybe a roster player to even out the salary. Anything less, then they should forget about trading Miller because his value to the team is really high to get only fringe players back. If it had to come between choosing Miller over Boeser, I would choose Miller since Boeser is a streaky and inconsistent player and doesnt have all the tools Miller has. -

So let me get this straight. You are not high on JR who won the cup back to back recently with the Pens as a GM and has 3 cups with 2 different teams. But on the other hand you defend Benning who hired Weisbrod, let Brackett and Malhotra go and had loyalty to Green and Baumgartner to a fault. He is the reaso our team doesnt have any depth on D and still deploys an offensively inept bottom 6. The reason why we will miss the playoffs again while also have nothing in our farm team. He did draft well but then when you dont make playoffs for many years and end up as bottom 5 to 10 team, then you will also get to draft better players. Your whole premise of defending Benning is based on the fact he made several good moves but you dont acknowledge the fact that we are atill a bottom 10 team. -

I was actually pissed we got rid of Tanev and foreshadowed a much worst defense without him. Looks like I was right. In the end I rather have Tanev playing 65 games vs. Hunt or Poolman playing all the games. -

Cmon bro, he was our best Dman and fans wanted him gone due to him being injury prone but the last season we had him, he was healthy all season playing with Hughes. Another dumb decision by Benning to not sign him. Now we have Mr. part time Hamonic who plays 5 games per season. -

Yes I mean them, Rachel and Emilie seem really smart in terms of analytics. -

were you also concerned about Tanev staying healthy before we gave him the boot? I think his injuries were a result of some bad luck. He seems like a tough player. -

such a waste of cap space when Benning could have kept McCann, Dahlen and Forsling instead. -

Well good thing he has many smart people around him and JR at the top guiding us. Its not like Benning who only had Aquaman at the top to ask for advice while being saddle by someone even dumber than him as AGM. -

Its tje first time Canucks have a cup winning president building the management from the ground up. So I have really high hopes. -

We have smart people in management now instead of dimwits like Weisbrod who couldnt fax the proper papers to NHL head office leading to Flames getting fined. I mean Benning and Weisbrod was just another version of dumb and dumber. -

Meanwhile Benning spends our 9th overall on gems like OEL and trades them for the likes of Gudbranson and the likes, netting us bottom 5 to 10 finishes. I rather have JR -

No thanks, he drafted good but he destroyed this team with his trades and signings. He is only good as an amateur head scout -

Having someone like Dickenson play in OT ks a huge mistake. He cant even score on clear breakaways. Dude has worst offense than Marek Malik or Alexander Daigle. -

Myers and OEL have terrible foot speed and can barely keep the puck in. Myers sometimes gets aggressive and shoots but still they are no Hughes that can move the puck up the ice and distribute the puck properly. And after those 2, it gets pretty sad. -

Feels like Green and Bummer had inputs in how Benning shaped our D, specially when traded a mobile defensman in Schmidt to get even slower and got the likes of Poolman, Schenn, Hunt and OEL. Our D is the slowest in the league even when including Hughes. Those two clowns destroyed the Canucks D and Benning aided in that. -
