I can see Canucks dumping Ericksson and 2nd pick this year to Seattle or one of the rebuilding teams to gain cap space while also trading their 1st pick and a prospect for an impact D with similar or less caphit as Eriksson. Then add a 3rd line C through FA. Sutter and Edler should not be signed if Benning is serious unless Edler signs for 1 or 2 million per year. I want to see a defense like this: Hughes-Seth Jones/Cernak Schmidt-Myers Rathbone-Edler Hamonic Addition of Seth Jones or Cernak and Rathbone will significantly improve the defense.
-
Seattle could just tell them to give up a 1st and a 2nd in order to get McDonaugh. Or they could trade Cernak to us and get Juolevi, our 9th pick and rights to Edler in order to replace Cernak while keeping their 1st and 2nd to replenish their prospect pool. TB is at a good point to get great assets while most of their players have value and keep being dominant for years to come.
-
Yeah I think with this years draft being a crapshoot and lack of scouting due to pandemic, its best to give the 9th pick for a top NHL player similar to Miller trade. TB would probably need to replenish their prospect pool at some point to keep preserve their dominance and also helps them with cap space down the road. Maybe Canucks can give 9th overall, Joulevi and rights to Edler.
-
Can we trade our 9th pick plus a prospect for Cernak? Or give our 9th plus schmidt or myers for seth jones? We need a 1st pair impact D that can play defense. Benning should do everything in his power to get that RHD.

[Rumour] Washington May Look At Moving Kuznetsov
DefCon1 replied to Chickenspear's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
No thanks, we have Miller, Horvat and Petersson as centers. No need for Kuznestov. Canucks should target wingers since they only have Boeser, Podkolzin and Hoglander. We need one more top 6 winger to complete the top 6 and have miller or Horvat as 3rd C centering Pearson and Lind. Its either have that setup or look for 3C. Kuznestov doesnt fit the Canucks needs. -
I forsee another Myers type overpayment, 6×6 contract to make sure we always have some cap problems long term
-
will probably re-sign sutter again for 3 mil and 3 years because of his foundational plays. Then Re-sign Edler for 4 million and 4 years for that Vet experience. The rest will go to Hughes and Pettersson. To show fans that he is creative, he will sign Highmore to a 3 million 3 year contract.
-
Hoffman is too expensive, not sure we have the cap for that and Appleton will probably re-sign in Winnipeg. Although if we had cap space this offseason I like your idea. Still I would go after a better player than Hoffman like one of Tampa Bays forward that could be had for cheap via trade. If money wasnt an issue, a trade for Palat, Johnsson, Killorn or Gourde would be great. Imagine Palat next to Pettersson. But unfortunately we dont have much space until next offseason when we can unload Erikssons corpse and get rid of Luongos ghost.

I would love Benning to target a C like Danault this free agency for the 3rd line. It will make this team more competitve with Podkolzin coming in and Hoglander improving even more. Miller-Pettersson-Boeser Hoglander-Horvat-Podkolzin Pearson-Danault-Motte Highmore/Lockwood-Graovac-Gadjovic Out: Sutter, Beagle, Roussel, Boyd Vessey Now each line has size, speed, tenacity, grit and toughness element. Also bottom 6 lines would be able to score goals and grind it out in playoffs. Hoping Benning does target an impact 3rd C in free agency or via trade along with a reliable defensive top 4D.

Weisbrod will single handedly destroy this organization similar to how he destroyed the Flames organization. I still remember the big mistake he made when he was offersheeting a player back when he worked for the Flames. The sooner they get rid of this guy, the better it is for Canucks. Remember this Weisbrod guy is the same one that drafted Jankowski lol

Expansion draft: A golden opportunity for the Canucks
DefCon1 replied to Rudo's topic in Canucks Talk
I actually think it is smart to trade the 1st this year because its honestly a crapshoot with what covid has done. Next year the scouts would be more accurate in their scouting compared to this year and I bet there will be many great overagers next year. This was the year that I would actually rather had the canucks in playoffs just because its such a crapshoot draft year. -

Yeah you are right, maybe Palat or Gourde will be targeted by Seattle. Am just saying as examples but didnt know Killorn was that old. -

I would target a younger player that has a more reasonable cap hit like Killorn. They can eventually land players with higher price tags through trades that might give them additional pick. For example why get the 6 million dollar aging McDonaugh when you can get Killorn, Eriksson for 1 year and Canucks 1st round pick, 9th overall. This is the strategy used by Vegas when they drafted. Getting lots of picks and underrated cheap prospects. You dont go after aging vets unless there is picks and prospect added. At least that would be my strategy if I was Seattle. -
Now Official - Canucks Lottery pick from 9th position
DefCon1 replied to grandmaster's topic in Canucks Talk
I would pick Yzerman but do you think Aquaman will? Will Yzerman be a yes man? I mean it really depends on what Aquaman wants. -
Now Official - Canucks Lottery pick from 9th position
DefCon1 replied to grandmaster's topic in Canucks Talk
I suspect they will trade the pick if the players they like are taken before the pick. Only way they might not trade the pick is if they win lottery or the player they like who might be NHL ready soon is available to them. If None of that applies, they would probably trade at draft table for a top 4D, Think Devon Toews or Cernak. -
Expansion draft: A golden opportunity for the Canucks
DefCon1 replied to Rudo's topic in Canucks Talk
I think the canucks need a reliable top 4 D. That is an absolute must and there will be lots of them this off season due to expansion draft. Some teams will try to trade the players that cant be protected for cheaper than what the usual price would be just to get something in return. I would look at players like Cal Foote, Manson, Mayfield, Devon Towes etc. All the above might soon be available for trade due to lack of draft protection and this is the area where the management said they will be aggressive. I suspect in this crapshoot of a draft that there is lack of player info because of pandemic and lack of scouting, we will trade some high picks to get the players we want. If we can trade 1st for a player like Cernak or Devon Toews I would do it. A 2nd and prospect like Gadjovic or Joulevi for Reinhart could be done too. If cap is the problem, trading Myers or Schmidt to get Reinhart instead of trading prospect or picks can be achivable imo. There definitely needs to be major changes for this team to right the ship and this is the feeling I get from management. They lost key players last offseason and they will lose more this season in sutter and Edler. So we need impact NHL players instantly to replace them. People who dont want to trade picks and prospects probably didnt get the message that the management wants to compete as soon as next year not 3 to 4 years down the road. -
Expansion draft: A golden opportunity for the Canucks

Seattle will target the best and cheapest options than they will target pricier options in Free agency. They will not get the most expensive TB player exposed, they arent stupid. In fact watch them weaponize their ample cap space to poach even more players that might accompany draft picks. Its better for Tampa to get high picks or prospect from Canucks just to add to their prospect pool and bring more ELC type players in to replace lost players. Hoping Seattle to take an aging Mcdonaugh instead of a player like Cal Foote is just playing the guessing game. They can take the cheaper TB player and wait for TB to offload another player to meet the cap and get that player too. -
Expansion draft: A golden opportunity for the Canucks

Ben Hutton and Forsling are mainly depth players, not really top 4 D. Only players drafted that have top 4 D qualities were Hughes who was picked in top 10 and probably Rathbone. The rest of D he drafted were either depth players, bottom pairing D or AHL D at best. Benning even has problems pro scouting the right type of D by getting players likle Del Zotto, Gudbranson, Schenn, Myers, Benn etc. I mean we could have had JT Brodie vs. Schenn. But forwards, he has had success in pro scouting by acquiring players like Pearson, Miller, Motte, Toffoli even Highmore. -

DefCon1 replied to Rudo's topic in Canucks Talk
I still think he drafts better forwards than Dmen...with Pettersson, Boeser, Hoglander etc. Also they said they want to compete next year which means trading picks. I mean with this management its the wrong strategy but we have missed playoffs for many years now, I doubt this years draft will make us competitive, we eould have needed either lots of picks this year or maybe if we were still rebuilding. From management point of view, the rebuild is already done so I dont think they will wait 2 to 3 years again for players to develop which by that time, JT miller and Horvat will be close to or hit their 30s. We have already drafted Podkolzin, Hoglander, Boeser, Horvat, Pettersson, Hughes, Rathbone, Joulevi, Lind, Gadjovic, Demko not to mention busts like Virtanen. I think that is enough young players to work with. Now is the time to surround them with veteran talents and take the next step forward. We really cant be continuing to rebuild just through draft because players lile Horvat and Miller will eventually get tired and move on to another team. The fans are already pissed off and Aqualini is not the type of guy that will accept perpetual seasons of no playoffs. Something has to give since we have been at it for 7 years albeit half assed but still thats a long time. -

DefCon1 replied to Rudo's topic in Canucks Talk
Yeah but we can weaponize our protection slot to get TB players for cheap vs. having them picked by seattle for free. Target which is the best TB player that might be exposed to Seattle and offer something for it. Benning did it with Miller, I think he can do it again. A pick and a prospect for TB is better than nothing and Canucks have said they want to compete next year so am guessing they will take advantage of this expansion draft to poach players for cheaper price than any other year.
