Expansion draft: A golden opportunity for the Canucks
DefCon1 replied to Rudo's topic in Canucks Talk
Benning has been great in drafting forwards but I doubt he can get a cernak in 2nd round. He is not that great in picking good D. Plus I dont think they want to wait for players to develop anymore. -
Expansion draft: A golden opportunity for the Canucks

Assuming we dont have a player to our liking at 9 or 10, we could trade our 1st round pick this year for Erik Cernak of Tampa Bay. He is a top 4 stanley cup winning defender at 6'3, 233lbs while with a cap hit of 2.95 million for 2 more years. It would be another JT miller type trade and he fits right in with what Canucks need. Hughes-Cernak Rathbone-Schmidt Hamonic-Myers Cernak will not only replace Edler but he will be a huge upgrade on Edler. Also this would allow lightning to get a high 1st pick rather than either losing Cernak or Cal Foote for nothing. Tampa needs to protect Hedman, Sergachev, Cal foote, Cernak, McDonaugh. They need to expose 1 or 2 of the above to Seattle. While Canucks can protect Cernak, Schmidt Myers or Joulevi while Hughes and Rathbone dont need protection and Hamonic is UFA. -

hoe about we sign McDonaugh thrn, instead of Edler? -
I go BPA but if the players are equal go for positional need. If we ever get 1st overall pick, I would get Power or Clarke.

Honestly I rather have Gillis than Benning. Benning did draft well but he was also in position to draft well by getting high picks. Gillis drafted Horvat at 9 and I would think if Gillis had to rebuild, he would be more successful than Benning because he would still get the talents by picking high but would surround them by actual talent through great trades and free agency signings. Gillis was very efficient in using the cap, maximizing the cap space to add valuable key players. I just dont see Benning ever creating a contender even if he drafts well because he is bad at negeotiaing, over values players that dont have high skills and overpays in trades or focuses on acquiring players that either dont fit the team or they are at the tail end of careers. Numerous examples of this like Eriksson, Gudbranson, Myers, Roussel etc. His biggest flaws are loyalty to his players to a fault like Virtanen. We could have traded Virtanen in the off season for someone like Benett or even a 2nd round pick but now we would be lucky to even get a draft pick for him.

[Report] Canucks sign Travis Green to contract extension
DefCon1 replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Canucks Talk
Funny thing is Aqualini saying we will make the playoffs next year while making ZERO changes except maybe not signing our best goalie coach we have had in Ian Clarke. Bring back Edler, Sutter and Baertaschi too so we can pick top 10. Maybe that is the plan, trying to get high picks. -
oh god no, he will probably trade for lucic and sign Leivo for 5 million per for 4 years...Benning special and call it a day. I really hope he stays put and doesnt sign any free agents and lets Edler and sutter walk. Dont want a bunch of overpaid bums handcuffing the team again. He doesnt sign Toffoli or Tanev for 4 mil per but now he want to be aggrrssive this season and knowing his track record I rather he do nothing then do something which puts this team back another 5 to 10 years.

Then they would win the cup with our coaching staff while Aquaman and Benning would be holding the bag lol.

Now Official - Canucks Lottery pick from 9th position
DefCon1 replied to grandmaster's topic in Canucks Talk
Lets hope to win instead of saying we will never win lol. Its a 5% chance so there is a possibility to win it. Its not like lotto 649 yet people still buy tix. -
Covid19 should count as the biggest injury
-
put Hughes next to Mcdavid and Leon and he would have 80 pts this season. We missed Petersson for half the season and the other half Petersson wasnt that good. So Hughes had Boeser, Miller and Horvat as the only offensive options lol
-
Positives: Rathbone, Demko, Hoglander, Boeser, Podkolzin and 9th pick

[Report] Jim Benning to return for next season
DefCon1 replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Canucks Talk
Well all the teams in playoffs have DEPTH, players in bottom 6 that can score a goal or two. We have a bottom 6 made of washed up vets and waiver wire pickups plus a player that is accused of sexual assault. Out of all the bottom 6 players, I would keep Motte and Gadjovic and maybe Graovac. The rest can go. We need a 3rd line Center and a 3rd line winger. Also need 2 top 4 defenders assuming we trade schmidt and not sign Edler. -

I rather keep the picks at this point rather than give up picks for 1 year of bad contract. That should have been done last year to keep Toffoli and maybe Tanev. Too late now. -

I dont see Benning as the guy who can put the finishing touches. He isnt great in identifying NHL talent, but is great in drafting. We can win a cup but under a different GM not the one who lets a 28 goal scorer walk for $4 mil/year. -
