  1. No, it's not a good contract. It's a deal that works for player and team due to circumstance/context. But he's definitely being paid over market value and silly term.
  2. Don't think that would be a problem at all. I think plenty of teams would happily take on his only 2 remaining years if they have the right fit for him. The return may not be earth shattering but I think he's easily moveable. The real problem is having the replacement plan in place. Making that trade for a Marino, Schneider etc and having a guy like Lyubushkin lined up to sign.
  3. I think Marino could play with Hughes or OEL. Let chemistry figure that out. I also think Marino could easily still develop in to a top pair D, just like Tanev did, being age 24. Even if he's isn't there yet Thankfully this team didn't need to be at that "finish line" next year anyway I'd be for moving out Myers, trading for a Schneider/Marino (or similar) and adding Lyubushkin (Manson-light and cheaper) and let the pairings sort themselves out. Schenn has shown solid ability to play with either Hughes or OEL and would likely be fine with Rathbone/Dermott as well. Marino, Lyubushkin and Schenn gives us solid defensive D on the right to complement all our lefty pick movers, however the pairings fall.
  4. Sorry to continue shoot holes in all of your posts... But Tanev actually played about a minute more ATOI in Calgary then he did in Vancouver, even during Vancouver's rebuild. Was Tanev a top pairing, elite defensive D at 24? Marino wouldn't be the only piece in a potential Miller trade.
  5. Tanev almost never, plays anywhere close to 25 minutes. He's a +/-20 minutes D, who's first pair and a really good defensemen, can PK etc who pairs well with an offensive guy like Hughes. Even if he's not a "25 minute" guy. Marino is basically a younger clone. Feel free to adjust your perspective. It's ok.
  6. Nice. Glad to see all the panicky Pollyanna's wrong about Juulsen extending as well.
  7. Marino is a younger Tanev clone. Is Tanev "2nd pair"? I'd be just fine with him as part of the return. I don't think you grasp what type of player Marino is.
  8. Tanev has an ATOI of exactly 20 minutes. 19:44 with Vancouver, 20:59 with Calgary. Marino can play the same role.
  9. Sure, but let's not kids ourselves it's a "good" contract. He got an extra 3 years of term and upwards of $5m+ his value on this contract. It works for him ($$$ and security) and it keeps his AAV low for Tampa while they're still contending for a few years. It's not a "good" contract.
  10. Sure. I like Schneider. And if there isn't that chance?
  11. Weren't people JUST and STILL whinging on about Benning's tendency to signing guys to an extra year.l? Paul signs an extra THREE and a lot of the same posters... "Great deal!"
  12. Meh, not sure Jones qualifies to be honest. His defensive play is just ok at best, and he has been trending the wrong direction in that regard the past few seasons. He sure wouldn't be the guy I'd be targeting to play opposite Hughes. He feels like a less physical Subban but without the heights of the original, and an even earlier fall off then PK had. Hawks can keep him, and his inflated contract.
  13. Higher end 3C guys. Who's saying I don't like anything about Paul? Again, he was at the top of my list of who I hoped we'd target this summer. He's a REALLY good player in that role. But 3C's, no matter how good, tend to sign between 3-5 year deals. Not 7. They clearly overpaid in term to get the AAV down and get him more overall cash to stay. He got probably about $5m more overall in that deal than he was going to get in the open market.
  14. We need good players period. Especially right side, defensive D. Again, he'll probably be more like Tanev. A +/- 20 minutes guy to play with Hughes 5v5, play PK etc. How did Tanev look with Hughes? You're unlikely to get a 25 minutes, RH'd #1D type for Miller or anyone else. Teams don't trade those guys
  15. Young, Tanev type. Not super "sexy" but a damn good player.
  16. I don't think anyone is arguing he's not an excellent role player and 3C. He was long at the top of my list of guys we should sign this summer before he broke out on Tampa. But these guys usually get 3, maybe 4 year terms, not 7.
  17. I hope people remember this deal in the Miller thread. "What team is going to give Miller a 7 or 8 year deal?!" Any team that likes him and is looking to win now and doesn't care what his cap hit is in 5+ years. See: Nick Paul SEVEN YEAR extension.
  18. There's still Roy, Tierney, Sturm (and a couple other guys). I'd already largely moved on from Paul anyway after these playoffs. Almost no chance we were getting him after his showing, and certainly not on a reasonable contract I'd LOVE if management can wrangle Roy out of Vegas though. PERFECT fit.
  19. No Severson for me. He's "ok" but also not really what we need from a D and a bit older than I'd prefer. In that case I'd FAR prefer a package from PIT with Marino, Poulin, Blomqvist etc. Sharangovich, Holtz, Bahl as a sweetener piece... Those are pieces I'd have interest in from Jersey.
