[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks
aGENT replied to Podzilla's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Bang on. I want a good (and maybe more importantly, cohesive) defense. If that includes some good, big, grittier guys (it probably should)... Great! But they need to be able to pay hockey as well. But there's more to building a good and cohesive D core than just size, or even ability. Myers is a big, 2nd pair quality, RHD. Which sounds great on paper/individually. He's got size AND (2nd pair) ability! But the problem is, he's not complementary to either of our top 4 LHD (who aren't, and shouldn't be going anywhere and are superior players). -
Amazed nobody in our media has asked the question given management's comments on signing Euro's etc...

Not if we can acquire some better fitting, cheaper and younger pieces we don't. -

I &^@#ing loath those oversimplified jfresh charts but if someone doesn't think guys like Marino or Lyubushkin are solid shut down D.... -

With a plan in place to replace him? Absolutely. Good player but an ill fit (and expensive for being one) on our D. Doesn't fit well with Hughes or OEL and $6m is a lot to pay a guy you can't play in your top 4. Fact is we have a plethora of puck moving D on the left who need "simple", solid defensive guys on the right. Not another 2 way/puck moving guy. Added bonus that those guys are cheaper and easier to find/acquire. We could trade for a guy like Marino and sign Lyubushkin and be spending about the same cap, while having a better, more cohesive D core that's younger and a better mid-long term solution than Myers with only 2 years left is. -

We could be paying Marino and Lyubushkin together about $500k more than we're paying Myers alone. And have a better, younger, longer term D core. How terrifying -

Yup, I was disappointed he went to SEA before free agency. Would have been a perfect fit. Would have FAR rather had him than Hamonic + Poolman. But that's EXACTLY the your of D we need. -

They play a too similar game and OEL ended up "babysitting" Myers, being the safe "defensive" guy on that pairing, which neutered his offense. Why are we neutering the offense of a very good, top pair capable, 2 way D? Playing Myers with OEL limits our ability to get the best value out of OEL. Period. -

How is a right side of Marino, Lyubushkin, and Schenn/Poolman more expensive? Marino is already under contract, we trade a Miller/Boeser/Garland for him (or someone like him). Lyubushkin is a UFA and should come in around what Poolman costs. That D is younger, cheaper, better defensively and a better fit with the players we have on the left. And being younger, they're more likely part of a mid-long term solution vs expiring in 2 years, Myers. How is that remotely lateral? -

Swap any one of Hughes, OEL or Rathbone to the right. If we can add Hague, we should add Hague. -

Again, he's a perfectly fine, 2nd pair, 2 way D with size. Myers the player, in a vacuum, isn't the problem. His fit with the other two guys, on the opposite side of the top 4 is the problem. He's a poor fit with both. And if he can't play in your top 4 with your other top 4 D... -

It's not really about the return more the cap space and building a better, more cohesive D core. But I think folks will be surprised at the return Myers gets if he's moved. The thing is, while I'd certainly LOVE a 1A RHD, we don't really need that to improve our D. We're chock-a-block full of puck movers on the left. The right side just needs some solid defensive guys to play opposite of them. We don't need an "all around" D like Myers. We need defensive guys like Tanev/Marino (skating) or Manson/Mayfield/Lyubushkin (physical) D. Those guys are indeed cheaper (and younger) than Myers. So no, you're not. -

And I ask again. It's that a realistic fear? Does anyone think this management would move him, without follow up moves, and a plan to replace him? It's a silly concern. -

Miller + Ferland for Roy, Hague, Dadanov and a pick for helping them out...? -

Exactly. Good player but bad fit. That and he's set to expire in just a couple years. If we can move him for assets, while getting younger, cheaper etc and hence have a succession plan for him expiring in a couple seasons AND make a better, more cohesive D core... I don't know why so many are scared of this? -

It seems that many don't understand that any Myers move doesn't happen in a vacuum. Of course you need other D coming back somewhere. Do Rutherford or Allvin strike you as guys who would just willy -nilly move Myers and then sit back and cross their fingers that it all works out? So why does the "can't move Myers" crowd keep using that as a counter point? This is right up there with the nonsense we see as points to keep Miller. Clearly moving a Miller/Boeser/Garland for a guy like Marino and/or signing a guy like Lyubushkin, Manson etc would need to be in the works. By moving Myers out and replacing him with some of these guys, we save cap space, get younger, create a more cohesive/complimentary D core, and we start actually having a succession plan for him leaving in two years anyway. -
OEL is a WAY better defenseman and his contract isn't really an issue. Defensemen tend to play at a high level until their mid 30's, when his contract is set to expire. I have no idea why so many want to wish away one of our two, top pairing capable D.
-
Jim, is that you? Trying to cram his square peg in to the round holes we need, isn't the answer. Again, this isn't about him being a "poor player". He's a perfectly fine, 2nd pair D. He's just an ill fit with any of the other top 4 guys we have to play opposite of him.
