[Discussion] Acquiring Nicolas Roy for 3C
aGENT replied to aGENT's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
How about this...? Obviously we'd need to move Miller (and possibly Myers) first to facilitate the cap space. Then we take on Dadanov, Hague and and Roy for Poolman, Dickinson and Hoglander. They get a few cheaper replacement players (and Poolman may even be able to go on IR if it helps them), including a promising young Hoglander (that is still waiver free as well if they need it). Hague and Roy are probably around $3-$3.5m each on extensions and Dadanov is $5m so we're taking on $11-$12m (but better fitting players) and sending back about $6m for a net $5-$6m add on our end/saving on theirs. -

I think the value has to be close to a second, or they just make you offer sheet him and take the 2nd. Maybe even slightly more than the second as that benefits you as well by likely being able to get and extend the player for a lower cap hit than you probably would in an offer sheet scenario. Keeping the deal more "fair" to VGK also means you're not making an enemy that will turn around and offer sheet you when the opportunity arises (see: MON vs CAR), as well keeps them open to other, future trades. In other words, we certainly shouldn't be paying market value, but we also shouldn't try to outright screw them either. What goes around, comes around. -

I don't rate AMcD much differently than Klimovich. Surprised you'd freely hand over one vs the other. -

Hence why I'm suggesting a trade as an alternative. I think of rather keep Klimovich as well. I think there's a trade there that keeps the price reasonable given the risk of offer sheet. We only need to offer them something worth a bit more than the 2nd they'd otherwise get in an offer sheet. And if we can help them out with a guy like Dadanov as @Phil_314 eluded to... That's the nice thing about this. Given the risk of an offer sheet and their cap situation, guys like Hague and Roy are ripe for the plucking and for below market value. Personally I think something with Rathbone (plus maybe a mid-late pick), while talking Dadanov back, would likely be enough to nab Hague AND Roy. -

I don't think he'll be an instant hit. Even after this year of college, he likely has a year or so in Abbotsford. But he's got a world class shot, great attitude etc. Needs to improve the skating though. I think he can definitely be a (cheap) solid middle 6 contributor in a few years though. Right when we're (hopefully) contending and could use that cheap, quality depth. -

*Oof* that seems a bit rich (unless he didn't intend to sign, which seems unlikely at this point). Think I'd rather surrender the 2nd. -

Yeah... Hague is pretty tempting too. Another LD, sure, but that ability and size...*drool* Wonder who they'd want...? -
While there are certainly some decent UFA options (Paul, Tierney, Sturm) for our 3C hole, Roy seems to be a really good fit with his age, ability, size, being right handed etc. I feel like he'd be an excellent fit. Now given Vegas' cap issues, he's certainly ripe for a predatory offer sheet, but I wonder what the (friendlier) trade value would be instead of that 23' 2nd round pick (for up to $4.2m offer sheet)? Given the reality of a potential offer sheet, it shouldn't be much over that amount though. Thoughts?

[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks

Any of Boston, Calgary (depending on what happens with their UFA's), Carolina, Colorado, Florida, Los Angeles, Nashville, Islanders, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Tampa Toronto, Vegas, Washington and Winnipeg could/should all have some level of interest. Some as a rental (like Colorado), some as a medium term solution they'd like to extend. And if you're to believe the rumours, you can add New Jersey to that as well. There will be no shortage of suitors. -

If we were able to sign him until then, it would really get the cap hit down... -

I doubt EVERY team would offer that much, but it only takes one team to offer him something like $8x8. And I'd imagine multiple other teams will offer him $55-60m, easy. His agent will be using the Zib and Hertl contract comparables (and he's easily worth more than Hertl) . Even if you optimistically nix a year due to his age, you're still looking at $55-60m territory MINIMUM. That's just not something that works for us. And it's not a discount I realistically expect Miller to make. Ergo... I mean, I'm not on the trade Miller train because I don't like him as a player. -

I think there a good few teams who would give him +/-$60m. Probably even one or two that might offer him +/-$65m. I don't see Rutherford and co having any interest beyond 6 years personally. And likely would prefer 5. But even 6x$8m is "only" $48m... -

Honestly don't remember where I saw it. Think it was another thread Saw something that they were interested in some of Fiala, Miller etc this offseason. -

I have no idea if they have interest in Miller. Their local media has stated they do. So maybe they do. Nope, there's plenty of teams who would view him as a solid, medium term investment. As I and others have told you many times now. Nope. Nope. -
[Rumour] Devils open to trading 2022 1st-round pick
aGENT replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Particularly moving out Miller, even if we manage to find a good 3C, land Kuzmenko and money-puck some fill ins and/or land 2nd OA or similar, yes, it's entirely possible the forward group takes a small step back. Though hopefully things like said 3C freeing up Horvat for more offense, progression from guys like Podkolzin and Pettersson, Brock having a better year, bringing in those money-puck guys etc replaces some of that offense. But it also depends on what other moves are made. Can we move Myers out for futures and replace him with a less expensive but better fitting Lyubushkin? Does moving Miller bring back a guy like Marino (and other pieces)? Those things all nibble away at our cap outlay and trickle in picks and prospects to help restock those cupboards. That D is also likely better at both moving the puck forward and keeping it out of our end/net for a better goal differential. Tldr: you'll have to look at the totality of moves, not just single ones in a vacuum. The goal is to build a better, more cohesive team, with an actual identity and quality depth. -
[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks
aGENT replied to Podzilla's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
F's tend to peak around 28. D tend to be closer to 30 and with a slower decline and later at closer to 34 rather than 32. Goalies can be a bit all over the map, but good ones tend to play well in to their mid 30's Most of our core isn't peaking until Miller is mid way through his next contract and declining, so no. -
A guy like Lyubushkin shouldn't be prohibitively expensive. And/or hopefully our new and improved scouting and analytics departments can unearth an under the radar "next Manson" "next Marino" or "next Lyubushkin" or two as well.

Late 20's is when F's tend to peak (+/-28), so not really that surprising. It's not late 20's early 30's that concern people. It's mid 30's (usually a moderate drop around 32-33 and a cliff around 34-35) that get people concerned about long term deals in that age range. -
Again, it's not that it won't make Gudbranson look good. It will. But is it putting OEL in the best position to succeed? Are you getting the most out of OEL in that situation? He's the one getting paid $7m, we're better off getting the best out of him that we can, and putting him (and Hughes) in to a position to succeed. IMO, that's partners like Marino, Lyubushkin, Manson... Maybe Miller out of BUF (though he's more of a ?) etc.

aGENT replied to Podzilla's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Because the world isn't the literal place you'd like it to be MLL Grey areas be everywhere hombre! "Technically" players/agents/teams can't "negotiate a deal" prior to the UFA period. But you're a fool if you don't think those parties are having "informal discussions" (AKA under the table negotiations) prior to. Including with potential trade partners if they're permitted. The premise that Miller can only/strictly be a rental at the draft due to an inability to negotiate is simply naive. -
Similar problem with Myers and OEL. OEL is then covering for Gudbranson and then not getting used to his full capability. He's too busy covering and playing D to let his natural offensive ability shine.

We'd also need the appropriate partner, which we don't have, and aren't likely to have, on our 3rd pair. We also don't really need more depth D. Same issue I have with the "bring back Stecher" folk.
