I think you misinterpret my stance. I'm not arguing for the moves used to acquire him (nor do I have any desire to re-beat that dead horse). I'm simply stating that Gudbranson, viewed through the correct lens (a complimentary player with intangibles), and put in a position to succeed with an appropriate partner, isn't the problem. Acquiring him (cost withstanding) wasn't the problem either. I've long been critical of Benning acquiring players he apparently had no intention of actually putting in positions to succeed. IMO Gudbranson is just another of those incidents.

To be fair, he was always supposed to be a complimentary D, with intangibles. Not the guy driving a pairing. As we saw in Florida or now in Calgary (and yes, briefly here with Edler), when put in a position to succeed, with an appropriate partner, he can clearly contribute to a team (while bringing those intangibles). Benning seems to have a had a major blind spot with actually fitting cohesive pieces together. We still see the remnants of that on our D core with Myers being a bit of a square peg given the rest of the makeup of our top 4. He's a BIG RHD that can skate, put up complementary offense, play decent D, clear a crease etc, etc. Which in its own is a "good player", but if he doesn't fit with your other two top 4 D...

[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks

I love Farabee But him and Provorov are probably near untouchable off that list. Never hurts to ask though! Still, Konecny, 5th OA and Frost wouldn't be an awful return either All depends on how desperate they are to turn things around I guess. -

I've tried explaining it to him. Good luck. -

Miller + Myers ($1m retained) for Marino, Kapenen, Blomqvist, Poulin and their 1st. Then sign Lyubushkin Hughes, Marino OEL, Lyubushkin Rathbone, Schenn Dermott, Burroughs (Poolman in IR) -
Combination sophomore slump and that, IMO, he probably would have benefited spending time in the AHL refining his 2 way and systems play.

He is what he is. A slow, complimentary offensive D with a good shot, that struggles in his own end. I'd imagine with Colorado's speed, firepower and depth, he's going to struggle in this series. -

You spell JT funny. -
Bingo. And yes they are. Pretty much have to draft them. That's why I'd be game to move up in to the top 5 to get Necas/Jiricek, but I digress... Well exactly. While it would be GREAT to have a legit, all around #1D to pair with Hughes, both he and OEL are capable of driving a pair. Until/if we manage to unearth that, we can "get away with" some simply good complimentary, defensive guys there as a next best option. Hence my desire to trade for Marino and sign Lyubushkin. Yeah, if we can get say Kapanen and a 2nd from PIT or something like Dellandrea and a 2nd from DAL, while clearing cap and creating succesion from a soon expiring Myers, we're laughing IMO.

Kid's realizing his potential. Good for him but it looks like we missed that boat. -
Yeah, I'm concerned he's going to be in high demand and require at LEAST that mid $4m territory. Same thing I'm concerned about with Nick Paul. I was REALLY hoping he'd be our prime 3C target...but his play on Tampa these playoffs, is likely doing good things for his retirement fund Perhaps once we've moved Miller/Myers, we'll be able to leverage that cap space to get Roy out of Vegas instead. Marino to me feels a lot like a young Tanev (who we all know paired well with Hughes). Yeah, not the size I'd ideally want, but pretty much everything else. And if he had the size, he both wouldn't be available and would cost more cap...so silver linings Something around Miller for Marino, Blomqvist, Poulin and their 1st would be great. If they want Myers back, $1m retained to balance cap, we could take back Kapanen (and maybe a 2nd?). As for Schenn, I'd LOVE if we got some top 4 guys ahead of him (Marino-Lyubushkin) and paired him with Rathbone personally. Hughes, Marino OEL, Lyubushkin Rathbone, Shenn Dermott, Burroughs (Poolman IR?) ...could be a legit D core.
-
That's why I'd like Lyubushkin. Less of a fighter than Manson for sure, but plays solid D and plays physical.
-
My only thing against Stecher (besides the size) is that we don't really need more bottom 4 guys. We have Rathbone, Dermott, Schenn, Poolman and Burroughs already. That cap space is needed elsewhere IMO.
-
Don't even need to get rid of Poolman (though I'm not opposed). Trade one of Miller/Boeser/Garland for a Marino or similar. Sign one of Lyubushkin/Zadorov/Manson. Hughes, Marino OEL, Lyubushkin Make up the bottom 4 out of some mix of Rathbone, Poolman, Dermott, Schenn and Burroughs. Yeah, I like Manson a lot but he's likely looking at $5m+ (or at least high $4's)...
-
I don't think we want to go there #drama
-
Thanks for doing the work @JamesB. As I've been saying for a while now, OEL is not REMOTELY the problem on our D. In fact he's probably our best overall D man. Maybe folks will stop wishing him away with the data you've posted. Also, like I've been saying for months... If we can manage to move Myers, even with $1m retention, and replace him with a less well rounded but better defensively, younger, faster and cheaper D (like Lyubushkin and/or trading for a guy like Marino), we're likely a more cohesive D core. AKA better.

I don't know how "likely" that is. They might, but it might be for some size etc instead of a RHD. But otherwise Garland, new 3C, Kapanen wouldn't be an awful 3rd line. That's a lot of speed, 2way, and PITA ability. And either Garland or Kapanen can fill in in the top 6 with injuries. Trade for Roy from Vegas or sign one of Paul/Tierney/Sturm for said 3C. -

You spell Boqvist and Poulin weird. If we can send them back one of Dickenson. Poolman or Myers...then yes to Kapanen. Miller, Myers ($1m retained) for Marino, Kapanen, Blomqvist, Poulin and their 1st. -

To be fair, the kid has all the tools. Beyond the injury issues, what he really seems to lack is the drive required to make it and stay at this level. He just doesn't seem interested in doing the work. Which is extremely unfortunate. -

Easy enough to accomplish. You simply get a Miller trade done while simultaneously agreeing to the other trade with the trade assets. You just don't send one in, without the other. -

As usual, nothing is that black and white. What if we turn around and use some of those futures to nab guys like Roy or Hague from Vegas? More than one way to skin a cat... -

To be fair I don't think it's an intention to "bend things to his viewpoint". He just may be the world's most literal person. At times I've seriously questioned if he's a bot I don't think his parents encouraged "imagineering" -

Exactly. Strictly, they're not allowed to "negotiate" but they can certainly have "discussions". There's a reason so many deals (with highly complicated structures, bonuses, trade clauses etc) are signed literally minutes after free agency opens. They didn't just magically sort through all of that in 20 minutes...
