[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks
aGENT replied to Podzilla's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Sorry, nothing to do with emotion or "fan favorite". Younger, more likely to extend at a reasonable cost, team captain, better on faceoffs, doesn't pout, elevates his game in playoffs etc, etc... There's a million reasons to keep Bo here. -

I mean it's certainly possible. And like with Miller, if he's not willing to sign a reasonable extension, I'd certainly expect we'd move him for assets, rather than have him walk for nothing. That said, I fully expect we'll see Horvat extended at a reasonable rate and term. -

At the expense of OEL' s offensive game. Because they're an ill fit. My ignore button finger is getting itchy again. -

No, he's just an ill fit with OEL. They both play the same type of game (OEL at a higher, first pair level). We'd get more out of both if we had a "McNabb" or "Tanev" to play with either of them. Myers would be just fine on a second pair with a guy like McNabb. He's not remotely a "third pair" level defender. Our defense is just poorly constructed, with ill fitting parts. It's no more a reflection of his individual ability any more that it was of OEL having a "down" year playing with him. -

I keep having to write this but...It's not really about "replacing" him. He's a perfectly fine, veteran, top 4, RH'd, 2 way with size D who can skate and put up decent secondary offense. Nothing wrong with that at all. Just not remotely a fit with the players we have on our left side, and particularly in our top 4 (where he really needs to play given his ability and cap allocation). But if he's not a fit there... Fact is, we already got a better, higher end "replacement" in OEL. Both guys need a solid, defense first guy to play with. Even if they're technically not as good of players overall, they're actually a better fit. And as a bonus, they're also cheaper. -

While I overwhelmingly agree with your overall sentiment (as usual ), have to say, that "Benning trying just to get us to the playoffs" wasn't an issue with where we were in our cycle. As a team mid/coming out of a rebuild, that's exactly what we should have been doing. Progressing towards/striving for, playoffs. That said, where we are now, I wholeheartedly agree that it's time to "get serious". We've got the young core pieces, the time is now to cash in on vets with value and build around that core to bet better than just a team that "hopes to get in/anything can happen". We've been on that wrung. Time to reach higher. -

Trade one of Miller/Boeser/Garland for a RHD, sign Lyubushkin as a UFA. -

We do have Silovs, MDP (and Martin's only 26) FWIW... That said, I don't disagree. I wouldn't hate something around Marino and Blomqvist out of PIT (another team people shouldn't be ignoring as a possible Miller destination). -

[Signing] Oilers sign Evander Kane
aGENT replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Yeah, while I fully agree we could use a guy or two who play like Kane, I don't want him anywhere near this roster other than when we're playing whatever unfortunate team decides to give him more than one year of term this summer. -
[Rumour] Devils open to trading 2022 1st-round pick

Not under 25, but I hope we can also include Horvat in there. He can be our "grizzled vet" C when we're hopefully contending in a few years. -

I personally think it's somewhere in the middle. We're more than one or two shrewd moves away, but we don't need to tear it down and tank either. We need to move Miller for multiple, younger assets. I'd personally look at moving out Myers and replacing him with a younger, cheaper, defensive guy like Lyubushkin as well. Those are the big starter moves that clear cap and get some youth and assets in to the organization but there's still a lot of work after that. Still need a 3C, more grit, more PK capable depth guys, more speed and size... Need to continue to fill the pipeline with college and euro UFA's. Need to continue to draft and (better) develop more pieces, maybe even acquiring extra picks here and there. And even then, that likely only makes us a decent playoff team in the next couple years. We're going to need some luck and loads of further work and shrewd moves over that time frame to become a legit contender. -
I second that emotion. Panthers need stop playing like domestic pussy cats.

Fine, rotating 6th Absolutely! Love Schenn, especially at that price! I REALLY like Manson as well, other than that he's older and will likely cost a fair bit more. He's probably going to command close to Myers $ unfortunately. Likely right around $5m+/-. He is good enough. He's just not a fit on our D, with the other guys we have in the top 4. We simply can't put him, or the other guys, in positions to succeed, with him on the roster. -

Yeah, in an ideal world, Schenn should be our #7 that we can sub in for injuries, playing bigger/slower teams etc. IMO, we need to move a Miller/Garland/Boeser for a guy like Marino (or Marino), move out Myers, and sign a guy like Lyubushkin in UFA and we'll be golden. Hughes, Marino OEL, Lyubushkin ...and then make up the bottom 4 with some mix of Rathbone, Dermott, Poolman, Schenn and Burroughs. -

Haha yes, at times he can play like a solid #2, other games a #4 (or even #5) I'd say that averages him out to around a #3. But sorry, I don't really buy the "overpaid" thing. A #3, UFA aged, RH'd D, with size, that can skate and put up decent 30+ point complimentary offense... That's $5m and up. Easy. Is he a "bargain"? No. But he's not overpaid or if he is, it's a few hundred k at best, and not worth all the whinging it gets on here. Like Poolman, his problem is definitely fit/team need, not quality of player or contract value. Not really odd, just not the makeup of our team. We have offensive puck movers on the left. He needs a stay at home guy. Like I said, him and a guy like McNabb would probably be a GREAT 2nd pair. Yup, as I said earlier, he's making too much to play on our third pair and he doesn't fit with our other top 4. Poor fit. Not fitting doesn't make him a third pair D, or overpaid though. -

Hate to break it to you, but $6m isn't exactly high end dollars for a D these days. And with a defensively responsible partner, Myers would likely be considered "carrying the pair" with the offense etc he'd be putting up. Put him with a defensively responsible lefty like McNabb for example and that pairing would probably be a VERY good 2nd pair. Again... He's a fine player, he's just an ill fit, not put in a good position to play his best. And we're not moving Hughes or the better OEL...ergo... -

Myers isn't overpaid, again he's just an ill fit. He's a poor man's OEL. That's fine if you have a defensive guy on the left to play with him but we don't, we have a better OEL, who plays a similar game, at a higher level. You can't have two guys who both want the puck and lean towards offense on the same pair. It's either a defensive mess, or you get what we mostly far this year, OEL's offensive game neutered while covering for the inferior Myers offensive game. Good players but bad fit. -

aGENT replied to Podzilla's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I've said it before and I'll say it again. It's not about Myers being a "bad" player, I agree he takes FAR too much flack in this market. His problem is that he's simply an ill fit with the other pieces we have, doesn't fit particularly well with our two best D in Hughes/OEL (so not a good fit in our top 4) and is too expensive for hence playing on the third pair. Not a bad player, just a poor fit. This team needs more Marino, Lyubushkin and Manson types to complement the puck movers we have on the left. If management can figure out a way to swap Myers for guys like those, while also clearing some cap... Win, win. -
You're absolutely right. Precisely why so many of us think a trade is a far more likely, and realistic outcome.

Just to update everyone, @theminister has graciously offered to help update the team sheets with some of the executive being besieged with work and life. Much thanks to him and updates should be coming along shortly.
