[Rumour] Bo Horvat Trade/Contract Talks
aGENT replied to HOFsedins's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Yup. In a perfect world, maybe he's a bit faster and/or we don't have all of him/Boeser/Chiasson/Schenn on the roster... but there's nothing wrong with what Pearson brings, for his cap it. People who thought otherwise when he was extended, don't know WTF they're talking about. -
Congrats to Joel on his AHL debut!

[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks
aGENT replied to Podzilla's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Doubt we'd get both. Probably one of the two and Chytil,a first and maybe a secondary guy like Othmann, Robertson, Barron, etc. -

I'd rather just draft one of Nemec/Jiricek with the pick. -
[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks

To be fair, not "people"... just crazy, old aliens I'm personally fine with Chytil coming back as the "cap" portion of a trade, with some lingering upside. He's young, has a good two way game that works on a 3rd like and is a good size with great skating. And he's got good puck skills (hasn't translated to the NHL yet), but that "what if" upside is there. Nothing wrong with that for the cap coming back. But no, he's not the main piece. -
It would 100% be Canuck-luck for Miller to have a season ending injury a couple weeks before the TDL. I also think this TDL cost was (rightfully) high given, we had zero pressure to move him this year and the team was playing well/fighting for a playoff spot. I'm not shocked nobody paid it. Has little influence on the right thing to do next.

McAvoy too. This is the thing. There are in fact good teams who would be more than happy to make room to extend him. Not just teams that view him only was a rental ( though they'd be there too. But they're all going to be bidding against eachother regardless. That's the rub. They're lacking in the pieces we'd be looking for. I'd love Carlo but I doubt they have any desire to give him up. Lyssel and a first is a decent start to an offer but it's lacking a main piece. Debrusk is "ok" as cap coming back but his value is at best, largely neutral/aka not good enough.

I don't see this stretching past summer, or at the very least, early season. Too much risk he gets injured or has an off year, tanking his trade value. The closer to the TDL, the more leverage his agent and opposing teams trading for him have and the less we have. Too much risk we're battling for a playoff spot and either risk pulling the rug out from under the team by moving him, or losing him for nothing (which CANNOT happen). Never mind that this team in no way needs a season long "what's happening with JT?" soap opera from the media and fans. One way or another, this is dealt with this summer/early fall IMO.

Myers, after a good season and with only 2 years term left, might actually have some value to a team not looking for long term commitment. They're unlikely to find a better UFA for cheaper and/or only 2 years of term. Not saying we'd get an amazing return but I think he'd certainly be moveable without paying/getting some return (and the cap space). Dallas, with an expiring Klingberg comes to mind (and Myers is originally from Texas). Washington with an expiring Schultz etc? But I'd only move him if we're finding some other legit top 4 D elsewhere.... Like: Do we get a young RD guy back from moving Miller? Do we move one of Boeser/Garland for a guy like Marino? Can we sign a cheaper, better defensively (but less all around) D like Lyubushkin? Getting some of those guys for cheaper might even allow us to retain $1-2m on Myers and get a legit return... Beyond that, I'd be looking to sign at least one of Paul/Tierney/Sturm with our freed up cap space. C depth please. I'd also entertain bringing a guy like Richardson (or similar) back at near league minimum. Again, C depth please. Hell, Sutter on a PTO (then league min if he's fit) next camp too if he's up for it/over long Covid. I think he'd owe us that. Then between the youth added and cap space saved from moving Miller, Myers and one of Boeser/Garland... We can be ready to pounce on getting the "next Miller" or a "Toews for a 2nd" deal in the next year or two.

Demko isn't the problem. Being overly reliant on him to actually win games is. Having a good goalie is great, you need to put a team in front of them though. Agree Podz arrival in the top 6 is a boon. Would still like to see more there and in especially, our bottom 6. Good speed, not great. Same goes for our bottom 6, and D again. Having all of Boeser, Pearson, Chiasson, Schenn... Makes for a slow team. Better now absolutely. Getting a veteran guy like Richardson has surely helped. We need more guys in our bottom 6 who are actually good penalty killers including that 3c. No, we really don't. Trading Miller would inherently multiply assets and increase depth, while also freeing current and future cap space. Miller is great now, but paying +/-$9m to and eventual middle 6 player, right when the young core is peaking is bad math. I also hope to see management bring the strength they had in Pittsburgh and finding undrafted college/Euro etc guys along through their farm system. We can't rely on JUST the draft, especially if people want to hang on to guys like Miller and we're already Agree, but what $? Without moves we don't have the cap to target a 3C. Any D we draft is likely at least a year way. Even if we manage a top 5 pick for a guy like Jiricek. Schenn as admirable as his play has been, should not be in our top 4. Either way he expires next year. Myers the year after. Both are at ages we shouldn't likely be extending them, certainly not at meaningful cap hits and certainly not to be playing top 4. We basically have Hughes and OEL. That's it. We're a couple seasons from having Poolman, Juulsen, Woo as our right side D. That is not a contending D. But you need cap space to make those improvements, either for trades, or for UFA's. That cap space disappears fast paying Miller $4m more to regress in a few years. Agree that the young core is great and we absolutely should build towards their prime, which is 2-7 years from now. Most of those years will be with a regressed, $9m Miller. That's bad math.

I don't think we're going to do it either. Like at all. That's ENTIRELY my point. There's no realistic contract that the team could/should offer him, that works for Miller. Ergo, the only (realistic) option is to trade him. Some of us already arrived at this blatantly obvious conclusion months ago. Some are still desperately clinging to the notion that Miller is going to give us a $10-$20m discount and/or that we should in fact sign him to something like and $8.25 x8 contract that would be an albatross the last half, right when Petey and Hughes are at their peak. It's actually astounding to me how in denial so many are of what appears to be very obvious and straight forward

Corrections. Years 1 to 2 $10m Years 2 to 4 $7.5 What freaking 3C is making $6m?? GOOD 3C's make +/-$3.5! Hell, say $4 with inflation or even $4.5 hoping he can play at a middle 6 tweener level still. I'll even round out up to $5 just to illustrate how silly this exercise is. So years 5 to 6 at $5m (and no we absolutely should not be signing him to any longer than 6 years, 4 would be my ideal/preferred, if equally as unrealistic as your numbers here) Grand total of $45m or a $10m to $20m discount on what he can get on the open market... Good luck! Lol
