It's still middling. I've been fine with us aiming for "bubble playoff" team the last couple years as we were coming out of a rebuild. But now's the time for some serious decisions that will dictate the path of this team for the next 5+ years, as the young core enters it's prime. It's time to get serious. IMO doubling down on clinging to said mediocre roster, with more cap spent on it, and probably young assets burned to clear some of said cap, and a reduction in organizational depth in both ends doing so... Is not the way to go.

Good players get traded, pretty regularly. I don't think he was saying SPECIFICALLY, PPG American C'S with brown hair and the initials J.T. -

I think Sanheim has played right side IIRC as well (and might be a better fit with OEL) And I still think we need a more defensive leaning, 2 way guy for Hughes. Him and Sanheim together on a pairing could be an adventure in our own end lol. But he's a solid piece regardless. If nothing else, maybe we can flip him for the right D we need? I do love the idea of "lesser player" + that pick from Philly though, whoever the player is. And if that pick nabs us Nemec or Jiricek... -

The teams play has been admirable under Bruce. However, we're still overly reliant on Demko, lack speed and grit throughout the lineup, have a dog's breakfast for a right side D core, and no succession plan for the players currently playing top 4 there, who expire next season and the one after. We also lack a 3C/players more capable on the PK. Along with little cap flexibility to address any of that. It's great, that Bruce helped get the boys to play at "eleven" most of the time since he's arrived and get them back in the (bubble) playoff picture where a lot of us assumed they'd be (a bubble playoff team) in the first place. But it doesn't change any of those issues. This team isn't good enough (to be a legit contender), has major structural and succession issues, and none of those things are getting fixed with mild tinkering around the edges. Truly better than their early record or not. -

Was Sautner ever supposed to be more than a "Biega" type? And Brisebois had/has a "maybe" 3rd pair ceiling. Some times guys just aren't good enough. Full stop. Would it be nice to have a few more guys coming through our development system to the big club? Sure. But to be fair, we haven't had a lot of high ceiling guys go through Utica/Abby. Most of our better players came through college/Europe pipelines after we drafted them, and straight to the NHL. So not having many develop to the NHL club via the AHL isn't surprising. That tells me we need to do more/better on finding and signing undrafted college, Euro etc scouting to actually fill the AHL club with, instead of the veteran AHL journeymen that the previous regime seemed to favour. Those guys simply aren't likely to become NHL players. Thankfully that's something that new management was quite good at in Pittsburgh. -

Only issue I have with Konecny, is that he's basically a more expensive Garland. I wonder if we could get Sanheim instead? (Provorov would be better but probably unlikely) ... -

I doubt we're moving Boeser personally. With his season and contract issues, we'd be selling low and wouldn't get the value IMO. Garland + Poolman would be nice but depending on Poolman's health, that's probably not enough value for PIT. -

I don't think we can or should offer him $60m. I think we'd be looking at like $8's for 6 years (which still makes me uncomfortable) or around $50m. Which I think he could easily get from a better team, with a better chance at the cup, and potentially less taxes/more take home. -

I think Kapanen could be a solid middle 6 guy and brings the speed and PK abilities we'd be looking for. But he's very much an add on and not the main return. He might even pair very well with Horvat or Pettersson as well. Marino I think could pair very well with either Hughes or OEL though. -

It's possible. I think it's less likely be takes the discount required that he could get on a better team elsewhere, potentially with lower taxes as well. But it's certainly possible. -

You gamble pretty much all the time. Your constantly looking to move pieces for other pieces that you hope will improve your team. Whether that's long term (rebuild), mid term (retool), or short term (contender). It's near constant risk and gambling. Trying to guess which teams are going to be the ones to make an "illogical" gamble, trading for Miller is therefore difficult. Could be a contending team with an unexpected early exit from the playoffs. Could be a team like Washington, Boston or Pittsburgh with expiring cap elsewhere and closing windows. Could be an up and coming team like Carolina or New York looking for a piece to push them over... We'll know when we know. -

Sure. But your should be able to get lower risk, higher ceiling players for Miller. As well as additional pieces. All while not saddling the club to a bad, long term, high cap contract. -

This is a bit of a silly question though. There's probably a bunch of teams who "might". It's just simply not a "logical" move. Yet teams make "illogical" moves like that every year. Suddenly they trade for a guy they're forced to clear cap etc to retain. Happens all the time. And it's because you don't win cups making logical "safe" moves. To win a cup you inherently have to gamble and take chances. You can't fence sit your way to a cup. You gamble and attempt to make high leverage, high risk moves to push yourself to the top. -

Yup, even if we only get a collection of forwards and picks back for Miller (which would be fine too IMO), we could still probably package one of those forwards and say Rathbone for pretty darn good, young RHD from a team with a surplus. You're going to scare @JM_ with your "magic beans" talk but yes, this is another solid option of getting an eventual better player. You need to have good scouting and a bit of luck but that's how these trades work. -

Kapanen has more skill and less grit than Hansen but "ish". Marino is basically a young Tanev. Time will tell if he continues develop to be as good as "peak Tanev", but we could do a lot worse than "Tanev-light". -
[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks
aGENT replied to Podzilla's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Oh I have no problem moving Rathbone for value. I struggle to see where he fits unless he or Hughes switch sides. But Garland is arguably worth more than Marino and Kapanen isn't exactly soaring in value right now either. He's struggled this season and has had consistency issues. Maybe if we're also getting Poulin back or a pick or something but otherwise, it feels like too much value going out. -
[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks
aGENT replied to Podzilla's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Yeah, I don't know that I'd be giving up Rathbone for that. But I agree that Dickinson has negative value and there's little chance we'd be getting Marino and Kapanen for that either. Honestly, given Boeser's sub par year and contract situation, I question whether he has the trade value to get that done. Maybe if he's extended at a lower hit first. Otherwise it might be Garland that has to go to make a package like that work. -

I think a contender could happily offer him $8x 7 / $56m, lower taxes, and a better chance at a cup. Apparently it is that different Or at least one side of your mouth is attempting to argue it is Nils has "proven himself" to the the tune of 25 games at the NHL level FWIW. -

[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks
aGENT replied to Podzilla's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
That's not necessarily true. There's limited offensive minutes/usage behind Fox et al. Similar reasons Rathbone hasn't been playing here. Lundqvist would instantly be our best prospect, and at a very shallow position. It's not anymore "magic beans" than Schneider would be. That's just silly. -
[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks
aGENT replied to Podzilla's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Much lower? No. And FWIW, I posted numerous times that I'd happily take Lundqvist in a package for Miller as well, at the TDL (or this summer). He's arguably just as good (possibly even better) of a prospect than Schneider. Even if not the "perfect Hughes partner". We still need good, young, cheap, mobile D on our right side, even if we'd still be searching for a Hughes partner after. I'd take him+ in a heart beat. Mll did a great job of illustrating that Miller could take the discount we'd require and go play for a better team and pay less taxes, or chase money on a similar or better team, with better short term cup aspirations, as superior alternatives to what we're offering as a middling, non-contention team with major structural and succession issues, that would need a $15m discount. -
[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks
aGENT replied to Podzilla's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
One. You guys are hilarious... Another "nobody is going to want an every position, every situation 1+PPG forward... But we should sign him for eternity and eleventy-billion dollars" argument. Two, I have no idea what Miller wants to do. He could chase money and a short term cup window like Karlsson did or he could take the discount we'll be asking for, and go to a team that already has a better shot at a cup (and possibly, also lower taxes). What's least likely though, is him taking that discount,t to stay here, on a middling team, with major structural and succession issues. It's it possible? Sure. Likely...? Probably not. But this notion that other teams wouldn't pay him as much, or more than what we should be offering him, and/or with better chances at a cup, and/or lower taxes, is ludicrous. There will be teams lining up to talk to his agent, if he gets to free agency. +/-30 year old players sign these deals literally EVERY year. Like clock work. Don't try and fool anyone that this time is somehow "different". It's not. -
