It shouldn't be hard to sell Bo on actually building a proper team and a proper defense around him, while getting younger, cheaper and faster. That said, the same thing happens that would happen if you can't sell him on your amazing stagnation and regression plan. You're forced to trade him. This team with the same defense and Miller back, after shedding assets, to clear the cap to ice a worse roster than this year, isn't "competing next year". You need to get out of your head that this team minus Miller, but with a far improved D and faster, younger forwards couldn't be near/just as competitive next year and FAR more competitive long term.

If you don't move Miller now, you risk it even more because your allocating even more cap space to the same, middling team, and on a player bound to regress. Keeping Miller doesn't get us any closer either. In fact, using all that cap on him, pushes us further away. It's the opposite of smart management.

Best? I mean that depends on the team. Teams like Boston or Pittsburgh might. Rangers, probably not. Thankfully their "second best" are as good or better than the Bruins/Penguins best prospects And you still don't get it do you? It's not about replacing Miller. It's about getting assets that you can use to fill other holes, either directly, or as trade assets, while not committing top cap space to a depreciating asset. It's not remotely about "magic beans". Most of the "trade Miller" faction don't think the trade assets are likely to be organizational "saviors", despite your side constantly straw-manning it. It's about setting the team up to be successful in the future and having the cap space to be able to make moves like the one we made to get Miller, when it's time to do so. Adding depth to our youth so there's a succession plan without having to resort to the whims of overpriced UFA's. And again, in that plan, you still have $9m of cap space even if literally none of those assets amount to anything. Like not even one 4th line grinder (which is far, FAR less likely to happen than Miller regressing). Pure speculation... No, we've had reports of players the Canucks are interested in, suggestions of who teams made available etc. We also have frame works of similar past trades to refer to. So no, it's not just pure speculation. And even if it was, welcome to a discussion board. And yes, obviously nobody was willing to overpay for Miller at the TDL. And? We've already gotten reports of "groundwork being laid"... I'm guessing there's already a framework of " here's what we'll pay in the summer" on numerous guys, Miller included.

Any D we draft this this year is highly unlikely to be ready for top 4, let alone top pair minutes in two years. I already included Woo (Poolman, Juulsen and Woo) Your plan is to cross your fingers and hope for an over priced UFA (or two!) in a couple years to one, be available two, want to come here and three, have the cap space for while paying now 31 year old Miller $9m+. All while still having an at best, highly mediocre right side for the next two years... Again, agree to vehemently disagree. That's a $&!#e plan. Sorry.

[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks
aGENT replied to Podzilla's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
If he's is bad as you claim he is, he had even less trade value at the TDL. Probably would have had to pay or take a bad contact back. If his value is in fact that low, we may as well just let him walk. -
We'd also like to congratulate Mads on making his NHL debut, and his first win!

[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks

We would take him to arbitration before it gets to that. There's almost zero chance he's going to see his QO. -
Who's playing on that right side in 2 years when Schenn (1 more season) and Myers (2 more seasons) are gone? And realistically, as admirably as Schenn has played there. He does not belong in the regualar starting 6 on a cup contending team. We're currently 2 years away from Poolman, Woo and Juulsen as our starting, right side D. Agree to disagree (vehemently) that is doesn't need remaking.

[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks

Boeser will have more trade value after even a 1 or 2 year extension (either via negotiation or arbitration), at under his QO, than the almost none he would have had at the TDL. -
If it was up to me it would look something like: -Trade Miller for Lundqvist, Chytil and 1st (maybe try and squeeze one of Kravtsov/Othmann/Barron/Robertson as well, perhaps with retention etc). Or a similar package from another team. -Trade one of Boeser/Garland + Poolman for Marino and Kapanen. -Sign one of Paul/Tierney/Sturm for replacement C depth. -Bonus points if we can move Myers and replace him with the cheaper, defensively superior (if less well rounded) Lyubushkin this summer. Yes, we'll likely need to find/draft/develop/sign a legit 1st line W'er at some point in the next couple years as we'd be down a couple top 6 F's (and both Kapanen and Chytil are likely more mid-6 than top 6) but we'd be a TONNE younger/faster/cheaper so we're in a position to acquire the younger "next Miller", when this team is closer to contending. Kapanen, Pettersson, Boeser/Garland Chytil, Horvat, Hoglander/Podkolzin Pearson, Paul, Hoglander/Podkolzin Dickinson, Lammiko, Highmore Lockwood (Hell, I wouldn't even be opposed to bringing back Richardson or similar as 13th F rather than having Lockwood sit in the press box half the year). Hughes, Marino OEL, Lundqvist Dermott, Lyubushkin Burroughs, Schenn That's a FARRRR better defense that should both help reduce GA, and get the puck forward, to help our lesser top end but younger, faster and deeper F group. Hopefully that, and natural progression of guys like Petey/Hogs/Podz and that added speed can recoup some of the scoring losses you'd expect from losing a guy like Miller and one of Boeser/Garland. No reason, that roster can't still be a bubble playoff team next year. Then new management, needs to money-puck that hell out of finding college/euro FA's, make some good draft picks, develop those (and the guys we already have) and look like hell for "next Miller" when the opportunity arises to that we have the chance to push guys like Kapanen, Chytil etc down the lineup as guys like Pearson, Dickinson etc expire.

Local Boston kid with a bunch of family there as well. Pretty much the fantasy we all grew up with Well, I guess it could have been in the Stanley Cup final to make it the true "childhood fantasy"

[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks

Don't see any way this makes it past summer. The team doesn't need the distraction and they can't afford the numerous risks to his value if he's not a long term fit here. Extended (unlikely, given the lack of team/player contract overlap) or traded. It's resolved this summer IMO. -
[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks

Nope. I expected a slightly better return if we'd moved him at the TDL, but not this coming summer. This summer I'd be happy with something like Lundkvist, Chytil, a first and maybe one of Othmann/Barron/Robertson/Kravstov if we can swing it (or similar value from another team). I was never expecting something like Laffy, Schneider, Chytil, Othmann and a first +++, like some people. That's just silliness. If we had a better season, nobody would have been looking to move him at the TDL. Is that even an argument? I'd still be looking to sell him this summer though. Same. Don't see a contract that works for both player and team. There just isn't any overlap there. Miller is going to be looking for a +/-$65m contract. Divide that by how ever many years you'd like, to find your AAV. And we shouldn't be signing him for longer than 5'ish years. That math simply doesn't add up to him staying. -
Congrats to Marc Mclaughlin on his first NHL goal!

Problem is, those other teams can do that too, on top of the lower taxes. -

Other players are signing similar contracts under the same circumstances. Why would you think Miller will be any different?
