Then we simply move him for said lesser return in the summer. -

Sure. But that's kinda of the thing with managing a hockey team. You have to look past what you have now. And regardless, I'm far more inclined to pay Demko then, than Miller now. I have no idea why you've made that your arbitrary mental speed bump. -
We have very little we HAVE to move this TDL. Pretty much Motte. Maybe Halak if we can find a taker/he'll waive. Chiasson I suppose, if we can add a 6th or something for him. Beyond that, we don't have much to sell right now. Boeser I suppose, if you don't think he'll sign a reasonable extension (I do). Miller isn't likely happening until the summer... But I'll be thrilled if Colorado or New York decides to actually pony up this TDL. Maybe we do Myers this summer depending on other moves (getting a young RHD back for Miller for example). Would love to see us move one of Hamonic/Poolman as well but that likely doesn't happen until next TDL, with Hamonic expiring. Maybe we can move off ill fitting Dickinson while he perhaps retains some of his Dallas value? Unlikely though. In other words, don't expect any blockbusters.

Meh, it's early still. Have a drink, relax and enjoy the show. Besides, we have very little we HAVE to move this TDL. Pretty much Motte. Maybe Halak if we can find a taker/he'll waive. I'd take an extra 6th or something for Chiasson as well. -

[Signing] Bruins re-sign Hampus Lindholm

To be fair, by the time this is a problem, their window is likely slammed shut and they're rebuilding anyway. Aka: who cares? Precisely why "retirement" contracts make sense for some teams (contending, window closing... Like Boston) but not others (rebuilding/coming out of rebuild... Like us)... For those playing at home... Is a bit rich for a defensive D, but he's arguably the best one out there currently. -

If we're rebuilding when Hughes is 26-27, we &^@#ed up and none of this matters either way. Our window should be a good half decade longer than that. -

Miller is about to be an inefficient player in a couple years. IMO we need to do both if we have any hope of contending. Who has suggested it's a guarantee? There's no such thing in sports. This is pretty far in to scare crow territory for you JM. But again, the "worst case" risk of going the trade route, is that literally none of the trade returns turn in to anything, but you still have $9m of cap space to fill holes. I honestly can't fathom how people don't see that as FAR less risky than the worst case scenario of extending him. -

Why do you keep doing this? Not being a contender =\= tanking. Like at all. We have too many good players, least of all Demko, to tank. Nevermind the likely Miller trade return, never mind subsequent moves this summer. There's zero reason we can't be a bubble playoff team again next year. No hockey team has ever gone from tanking/rebuilding to contender in one season. It's a ridiculous premise. As is moving Miller = tanking. As is asserting Bo is not going to stick around (how can YOU state that with certainty?). And yes, we DO need more changes than just Miller. We have an entire right side top 4 D to build (and an eventual OEL replacement on the left). We need to shed some of Hamonic, Poolman and Dickinson. We need a 3C. We need players capable of playing/excelling at PK. We need more grit and speed. We need more/better prospect winger depth to cycle through as other support/role players price themselves out (as Motte likely is). We're not a contending team as presently constructed. -

State what with certainty? I discussed probabilities based on readily available, overwhelming, statistical analysis. The best case scenario with re-signing Miller is that he plays at/near his contract value for most of it. Based on statistics, reality is likely something less good than that. How less good will vary on a crap load of factors. Nowhere in there an I claiming anything "with certainty". Especially that Miller is "certain to not be one". I literally stated that "being one" is a possible (best case) scenario. No, they're GM's of contending teams where his contract likely becoming an anchor doesn't matter as much, because they will likely be out of, or exiting, their contention windows by the time his contract becomes a problem. You do grasp the the difference right? A contending team with say 3-4'ish years left in their window now, is in a vastly different spot to the Canucks who aren't entering their window for 2-3 years. His contract being a problem when they're rebuilding, is a LOT different than his contract being a problem when we're pushing to contend and need cap efficiency outside of/to support the core. Once again, we're not trying to replace "today Miller", we're replacing 4+ years from now Miller (plus filling other holes!) who is likely, in a "good case" scenario, scoring at a 50-60 point pace. If you don't think that's easier to do with both a trade return from moving him, AND spending less than $9m... I'm not sure what to tell you. -

Now who's banking on young players improving? Who's playing D on this future team? Hamonic and Schenn expires next year. Myers the year after. -

What level of narcissism is required for the same guy to keep coming in to the same discussion thread to complain about people discussing a polarizing topic (while adding literally nothing to it)...? Still far less risk than the odds of Miller even playing up to his $9m contract, let alone surpassing it. Which, if you're being honest, are the only two "good" outcomes. Every other (and more likely) outcome is varying degrees of bad. The odds Miller can't live up to that contract are high. The odds we spend that $9m worse, are low. And it doesn't have to be UFA's, not sure why that's in your head... Look how many good players were had for cheap in trade because good, cap strapped teams can't afford them in recent years. Including how we got Miller in the first place. The odds NONE of the trade returns, turn in useful players, is low. Picks are picks. I don't think anyone is assuming they're large parts of the deal. And they (or the players picked with them) can also be used as trade currency. -

How the cap is used is largely up to new management. The cap = opportunity to use it better than we currently are. Maybe even to trade for the next Miller! Why do you assume it would be on "useless free agents" or extensions? Who are we "uselessly" extending? Petey? Podkolzin? Would be difficult to be worse than spending $9m on a 50 point player... Literally addressed this s few pages ago. Even if literally none of the trade returns become even a 4th line grinder, you still have $9m in cap space. *Opportunity. Nothing more. I've seen literally no one saying picks WILL provide solid depth. I mean it's likely. Players generally continue to get better and peak around 27-28, with a few years before and after, of high level play ("prime"). There's just so much hyperbole straw here, I'm getting hay fever. Nobody has said useless. He won't likely be playing at a $9m level. Probably half that. I don't think I've seen anyone make that development argument either. We won't be able to afford the quality depth around them, or fix our other, plentiful holes and succession issues, required to make is a contender. -

No, it's not. Moving Miller isn't about "replacing" him. You can't just replace "today Miller". Most of us concede there will be a short term "step back" (though I still believe we could maintain being a bubble playoff team with the right return and subsequent moves). You use him to fill our other (and they're plentiful) holes and succession issues. Not to mention the cap crunch we find ourselves in and not spending $9m on a 50 point player in 4+ years, in the meat of our contention window.
