  1. They're not mutually exclusive. IMO we need to move both groups to actually make a go of this core. And no, you can't replace them with cheaper players and actually expect to get better. You can certainly get more value out of a player with Dickinson's cap (who's been an ill fit). And I'd certainly prefer combining Hamonic and Poolman's cap on one, better, player and a cheaper/ELC 3rd pair guy. But if you think a 2nd pair, low cap "Burroughs" is going to get us to contender status... I don't get how this is so hard to see? Why would we spend $9m when we could get that player for around $5 as av UFA, or even cheaper if we can ELC/RFA that guy as his trade return or acquire him, like we acquired Miller in the first place!?
  2. Player Name had 30 goals and 63 points the year before we signed him and a solid track record before that, even flirting with 1ppg a few years in DAL. If anything, he'd arguably been a more consistent producer than Miller over his career (albeit without the high peak Miller is enjoying this year). The parallels there are not as far off as you'd imagine.
  3. I have yet to see anyone suggest Miller isn't a good ("special") player NOW. That's not the concern here. People keep stating "we can't replace what Miller brings" etc. It's not about replacing what Miller brings NOW. It's about replacing what Miller brings 4-5 years from now, when we're (hopefully) at the peak of contending. Do you guys honestly think that either via trade return from him, or cap space from not signing him, that we couldn't replace the likely 55'ish points he's producing at that point? And likely for nearly half of the $9m we'd need to be paying him. And in a player who at that point is younger, likely faster and with with way more miles left on him?
  4. Problem is, being this is an outlier/peak season, It's also not probable that he remains top 10 in scoring. And that's BEFORE age related decline comes for him (likely in 3'ish years), further sapping his production and value under a new, $9m x 8 contract.
  5. No move is without risk. That is not an argument I've seen anyone make. Moving Miller is less risk. Re-signing Miller at something like $9x8, in a best case scenario, you get something close to a 1ppg player for the duration of that (LARGE) contract roughly at/near it's value. That's also the least likely outcome. Every other outcome of that decision ranges from "meh" to "godawful, Player Name-esque anchor". Guess what happens in the highly unlikely, worst case scenario, where every single piece we get in return for Miller is an absolute bust? Not even a 4th line grinder in the bunch. You still have $9m in cap space and the mountains of opportunity it represents. And if we're sticking with parallels, the trade return from moving Wheeler out as well... Not that they would have, as they were already in a contention window, unlike us.
  6. People putting too much stock in a couple games IMO. Management knows what this team is, what it lacks and what it needs. A couple of games doesn't really change that. IMO, it's all about what offers are, or aren't, on the table. If we're not getting value, we have no urgency to move anyone outside of Motte (and even then I'd let him walk if all we're getting is 4th rounders or something), just for the sake of moving them.
  7. We can trade him for more now than what we paid for him. That's exactly the type of moves Benning should have and did make. Now we need to follow it up with another proper move by selling high on him.
  8. Numerous teams will likely line up to offer him $9x7 easily.
  9. I wanted to move him for pricing us out long before the Hertl tweet or his recent bump in play under BB. So like last spring...?
  10. Boeser and Garland are both young enough to contribute to that window. Their question is more about fit, cap hits etc. Miller, absolutely. Motte too if he's not willing to re-up in the $1.5-$2 range. Dickinson, if he still has any of his previous value before we acquired him... Hamonic and Schenn expiring next year? Potentially. If not now, next TDL. Myers and Pearson expiring the year after? Ditto.
  11. No, we've been rebuilding. As in building a new core (Hughes, Petey, Demko, Horvat) for the last 8 years. We need a small retool around them. Cash in valuable vets to build around their contention window.
  12. It's definitely the right move, and let's not lump all of us fans together As for ownership, they hired the guys who immediately came out and basically said that was the plan. Have to think they're on board for a little mini-reset.
  13. Kadri situation AND MacKinnon getting a raise situation. Miller works so well for them, for so many reasons. Too big of a concussion risk. I want Newhook and Barron.
  14. I'm all for letting the boys see what they could do up to the TDL...but anyone with eyes should be able to see that this team isn't built to contend yet. So get at. Get building.
  15. The more teams load up... Have to think someone gets desperate enough to back up the asset version of the Brinks truck...
  16. League Announcement: After a brief leave of absence due to health concerns, the league is excited to have GM @Rush17 back at the helm of the Columbus Blue Jackets. The team was reportedly so excited to have him back that they're having a heck of a night and have leap frogged some pretender team out West, up in to first place overall!
  17. No, they don't. Still doesn't mean we should be extending him for $9m in to his late 30's and screwing up our contention window. Florida's going to have a lot of fun with that contract once Barkov's raise kicks in next year and Huberdeau and Weegar are both due the year after. With Bob's contract on the books, they're going to have a hell of a time keeping that all together. Just as we would if we were to sign Miller to a $9m deal. PRECISELY WHY WE SHOULDN'T DO THAT.
  18. There you go again, trying to replace Miller No, we don't (can't) spend $7m trying to sign a Miller-Lite. We spend $2.5m-$3.5m signing a Tierney, Paul or Sturm 3C to help shore up our C depth, have a guy that can PK and shoulder some of the match up load, hence freeing up Bo a bit for more offense. The young core will have to continue to improve and slowly "replace" him over time. "Waiting" for what? With the right returns and subsequent moves, there's zero reason we can't still be a bubble playoff team next year. "Bo, we're going to sign a really good 3C to take on more match up and PK and help free you up. We've also got a couple of young, fast, skilled D we just go back in trade to improve our transition game out of our own end and get you forwards the puck more. Speaking of forwards, we added a couple young, fast W'ers to contribute in the middle 6, one or two of whome we think will fit really nice on your wing. Sound good?"
  19. A $9m 2C, likely trending to 3C. Prospects, picks... players capable of supporting the core on cheap ELC's. Not going to happen with you trading all of them away and not acquiring any. A few months of struggling, in hi sophomore year is not that concerning. You don't dump players like that. Karlsson and Lockwood are your succession plan at F....? And D? No $9+m does that. Again, this is not about "replacing Miller". YOU are too fixated on that. Petey is largely going to have to do that internally, over time, anyway. We can't/shouldn't pay Kadri $7m any more than we should pay Miller $9m. Stop looking for quick fixes. What are you, a millenial?
  20. Neither do ones with boat anchor contracts, no depth, no succession plan etc. Nobody's suggesting we don't need players like Miller.
  21. He won't likely be a 1C for most of that contract. Not with your plan it isn't. Using what little succession players we have to dump contracts is a BAD idea. Petey, Hughes, Demko and whoever else we add between now and then (ideally a couple of whom are on D) with a side helping of Horvat, Hogs, Podz etc. Not being able to retain quality depth around the core (see: EDM), not having cap to acquire the next Miller, not having cap to retain RFA's needing raises, not having cap to sign/trade the put you over the top guys when we're actually contending. That's silly IMO. Actually gets harder with him IMO.
