[Signing] Sharks re-sign Tomas Hertl
aGENT replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Their play has been admirable. Doesn't change the obvious holes, structural and succession issues, or cap we need to move out just to retain some of these guys needing new deals. The team is now playing above the expectations of the bubble team they were expected to be. IMO, some if that is playing over their heads, that we've faced a lot of backups, 2nd in back to back games (and likely not opposition's best efforts some nights) etc. Some of that is them playing well (and having Demko). In no way though do I think a veteran exec like Rutherford has confused himself in to thinking we're better than we actually are though or that mid term, there's not a LOT of work to do to sort this roster out, fix the holes and succession issues, retain key youth and the right vet/support players, add key support players, get faster etc... All under the cap. We shouldn't be signing him to the deal required to keep him here. Period. If he's even interested in staying in the first place. Ergo, if he's not staying, we need to move him for as much value as we can. -

Disagree vehemently with this. If we know he's not in the long term plans, we HAVE to get assets back for him. No ifs, ands or buts. -

No, we're not good enough, even with Miller having career seasons and likely at his peak. And paying for those peak seasons, while he regresses to a middle 6 player, isn't how we get better unfortunately. People seem to be stuck on "not wanting to pay stars" or "hit 30 and it's downhill". That's not what this is about. It's all about timing, windows and opportunity cost. I have zero problem with players in their 30's. I'd have happily seen us sign Pavelski this summer to the short term extension he just signed in Dallas. I have no problem paying Petey, Hughes or Demko on their upcoming extensions, through their primes and in to their early 30's. I do however, have a major problem extending Miller at $9x8, through his declining years, years before our contention window. It's not personal, it's not about him as a player, it's just simple math. OEL is not remotely similar. A similar deal would see us signing Miller from 25-33'ish, at a lower hit (RFA, pre-peak years) That's simply not reality though. Petey and Hughes haven't even entered their primes yet, and Demko is just starting his. Again, even post-Miller, with the right returns and right subsequent moves, there's zero reason we can't be a bubble playoff team again next year. There's no need to "waste" any of their windows (which are barely open a crack at this point). Besides, they probably need a couple warm up laps in the playoffs before we do any real contending anyway. -
[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks

You can't carry the Miller situation in to next season and certainly not next TDL. The closer to the TDL, the more leverage buyers have. Therefore, likely the lower the return. You also risk him having a down season, getting injured etc. Then there's pulling the rug out from a team (hopefully) battling for a playoff spot and then risking him walking for nothing if you don't move him, because of it. The exact reasoning folks don't want to move him now. The main reason this even came up this season was because originally, we weren't fighting for a playoff spot. Like remotely. And he was having a very good season, with his value never higher due to his play, and having two, bargain cap, playoff runs under contract. Figure out this summer if he stays or goes (and I honestly don't see a contract that works for both team and player given his contract comparables, age and our window/age of the core). So goes it is. Pull the Band-Aid off. Probably at the draft. -

I'm not overly concerned about OEL. D tend to play at a higher level later. They generally stay pretty steady until 34, where forwards tend to drop a fair bit at 32. Personally I'd rather just have OEL to worry about in 5 years for a year or two than Miller in 3 years and worrying about him for 4+. -

Agree, those are the only two options. One way or another, this needs to be dealt with by summer. I have zero tolerance however, for anything like a "Hertl+" deal though. We are in no position to be signing Miller for anything resembling $9mx8. Not with where our contention window lands and his age. Save that cap for players this good, when we're actually contending. Hence my thinking trade is the only realistic option. -

Then Petey needs to play better. Consistently. Moving Miller isn't a death sentence. The team doesn't fall off a cliff. With the right return and subsequent moves, there's zero reason we couldn't be a bubble playoff team next year, just like this year with Miller. I have mutual interest in re-signing Miller as well. At $7.5m x 4-5 years, I'd LOVE to keep him around. IMO, there's no realistic deal that works for the Canucks extending him, that also works for Miller. And that's if he's even willing to extend here. It's a non-starter IMO. -

Starting in 2+ years. As already stated by management. And yes, that largely revolves around our two best, young players, not named Demko. And neither will already be 30 when they sign extensions FYI. It's not about not paying guys when they get expensive. It's about not paying those guys when it doesn't remotely fit your window. If Petey and Hughes were 28 and 27, I'd be all for extending Miller. By the time his contract is a problem in that scenario, our window is shut and we're rebuilding anyway. AKA who cares. Hughes and Petey will be at their statistical "peaks" in about 4-6 years. Hopefully with a good few years, before and after, of performing at a very high level. EVERYTHING this management does, should be focused on building as much quality and depth around those 6-8 years as possible, ideally peaking at around year 5 +/-. This isn't about a fear of commitment either. We do want to commit, to the young core, and do a proper build around them for once. -

Yes, exactly. Repeating the same mistakes, not building properly. Shuffling the other deck chairs doesn't clear enough cap. You move most of those guys and you're bringing in similar money just to replace them. All while also spending assets we need to move guys like Dickinson or Poolman. There's no way getting around it. You keep Miller at +/- $9m and we have to spend young depth and picks to make the cap space to do that, we then lose more depth over time by paying more money to cling to the current, hole filled, bubble team we have now. By all means, barring a Godfather offer, he's not getting moved this TDL. But there's no question that we should be moving him and not committing $9m to an eventual 3rd liner, this summer. -

Problem being, you likely have to be more patient, not less, if we retain Miller. IMO, extending Miller is pretty much a death sentence for this current team. No cap or assets to fill those holes and stagnating and mediocre bubble team until we give up and tear it down, wasting years of the kids windows. -

You don't just "replace" Miller. You move him to help fill our plentiful other current and upcoming holes at 1RD, 2RD, 3LD, 3C, LW etc with younger, cheaper, faster players than we currently have in those spots now. You do that, while clearing cap so that you have the opportunity to trade for the "next Miller" when he becomes available, and better fits with our core's window instead of paying $9m for a 3rd liner, in the meat of that window. -

[Rumour] Canucks and Laffs (Liljegren)
aGENT replied to AngryElf's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Even if we use him as an acquired assets to flip now or later, that's a solid move if we can swing it for a pending UFA. Maybe Colorado is inclined to include Barron or the Rangers Schneider, if we can send them Liljegren back.... -

Hell, even if he's just an acquired asset to play and perhaps flip later (or now). Maybe the Rangers are more inclined to include Schneider or Colorado Barron if we add Liljegren to a potential Miller trade... -

3d chess move.... Move Motte for assets you use to move Dickinson. Re-sign Motte in July -

I don't think we likely see him moved this TDL (barring a Godfather offer) but I'm doubtful a deal that works for him, and the club, exists. If he's even interested in staying at all. -

I think you need to look at what most late 1sts are... I'd rather have Kapanen and hope he rebounds to something like his previous 60 point self. -

Not sure Lockwood will be ready next year, he still has a fair bit of work to do on his systems/defensive play. But eventually, yes, perhaps. Yeah, I mean if we can move off Dickinson, I'd consider paying Motte at $2+ instead, but really, you need to keep guys like Motte under that $1.5-$2m line for it to make sense. After that it's time to develop/trade/sign college/Euro or regular UFA's you hope can grow in to that role. -

This. Demko is 3 years younger, a goalie (who tend to play well, longer) and under contract for 4 more years.. You seem to be conflating "playoff team" with "contender" I think we could continue to be a bubble playoff team next year, and for the next few years. I think we're 2+ from being a contender though. IE: mentioned in the same breath as teams like the Canes, Panthers, Lightning, Avs currently are. AKA one of the best teams in the league, a perennial, deep, playoff team. -

Yeah, we're like 3+ years away from that point. Miller will be 32 in 3 years and likely taking a nose dive. -

You need to try to find the "next Motte" either via trade, a college/euro UFA etc.
