  1. Feels more like a summer move anyway if it were to happen. An older team like DAL already losing a righty in Klingberg might be interested in his short (2 year) remaining term at that point. And he's originally from Texas...
  2. If he shot right, I'd half consider it... But he doesn't...so meh
  3. Yeah, it depends a lot on what Boeser wants to sign for IMO. Personally, I think a reasonable extension gets done. But if he's wanting his QO.... Marino IMO is at least mid pair (maybe more as he enters his prime). Kapanen is struggling for some reason (confidence?, fit?) but easily has 2nd line upside if he can get back in to form and has more speed, PK ability etc. Joseph is basically on a similar trajectory to Marino, just a couple years younger/behind him. Poulin is a pretty safe bet to be an NHL'er...just a matter of what ultimate ceiling he develops to. Nothing overly flashy or exciting but we could do a lot worse. And we do need to flesh our solid, young, cheap depth (with speed). All/any of those guys would do that.
  4. Love Motte, but he's not likely returning a top 4 capable, young RHD, unless we massively fluke out/get a 2nd/3rd pick back that flukes in to one.
  5. To be fair, that was a combination of poorly communicated (Benning) and poorly understood (fans/media) "hype". I think Sutter very much was a solid 3rd line, do everything C who could pitch in complimentary offense, occasionally fill in on the second line, play D/PK, shelter kids etc and was a major "culture carrier" (the exact type we likely missed, earlier this year). Sounds pretty "foundational" to me, but it's certainly no star, or even a bonafide top 6 guy.
  6. Joseph is good. A little younger but roughly on par with Marino but a lefty. Pretty much instant upgrade on our current 3LD and would be a decent long term, potential OEL replacement for the 2nd pair behind Hughes. Poulin is a bigger PWF type with a good shot, decent play making etc. Probably more mid 6 player... But who knows until he becomes what he becomes. That's probably the biggest thing against the Penguins assets. They're likely mid pair, mid 6 players instead of the potential top pair, top 6 ones. There's some outside chance they get there, but it's more likely they just good players vs great ones. They're all relatively safe bets to be NHL players though.
  7. Yes, and I listed some players they'd be able to send back.
  8. Sutter coming back would be HUGE. Not only for the comeback but the guy is a major culture carrier.
  9. Scanlin and McLaughlin (maybe Mann) should be our main college targets IMO.
  10. You asked for a list, I gave you one. I'm not suggesting that's what we should take (OMGZZZ... BEST OFFER EVER!). Though we could probably do worse
  11. Yeah we have loads coming off the next few years... Hamonic, Myers, Pearson etc. Some of will go to Horvat, Petey, likely small raises too Hog/Podz etc. That cap though is reason we need to flip guys like Miller for young, cost controlled pieces. So that when we are actually contending again in a few years we have the depth around our stars, the cap to pay our stars, and ideally some space left over to add the "next Miller" from a team who can't afford to keep him.
  12. No I think we can continue be a bubble playoff team next year, even without Miller, with the appropriate returns and supplemental moves. A cup (not playoff, cup) contender is likely a few + years out though. Miller or not (and IMO actually harder with). Horvat will need an extension before either of those scenarios anyway. Being that's it's mostly just Pettersson. And he shouldn't require that big of a raise over his current deal. If he takes off, it's only a $1-2m raise to get to the money we're talking about paying Miller. We're not good enough now, with Miller, to be in a contention window.
  13. Management has already come out and said they plan to get younger, faster and cheaper, possibly taking small steps back to build a long term, consistent contender. Ownership who hired them then, would presumably be on board.
  14. Agreed. The vast majority of the risk is in extending him. At best, you're paying market value ($$$$) for a really good player (which there are certainly worse things than, but it's not exactly "amazing" under a cap system either). Basically every other outcome is varying degrees of downside from meh to
  15. If in say 4'ish years, we had his $8.5m cap space to spend, what should by that point be, another late 1st, to acquire the "next Miller"... that would be the goal. Just like how we got him in the first place. We shouldn't still be building/should be contending at that point and would be looking to spend futures to acquire some key "over the top" pieces.
  16. Basically what coconuts said. Too much, too long, right in the meat of the young core's contention window with a very likely, declining player. The likely opportunity cost of extending him is just too big. Even if NONE of the assets we get back, work out to even be depth NHL players (HIGHLY unlikely IMO), you still have his +/-$8.5m cap to fill roster holes.
  17. And if he signs a 4-5 year extension at +/-$7.5m, so will I
  18. I think it hilarious that the same people calling me a rose coloured, optimistic homer the last few years (including being excited when we traded FOR Miller) are now declaring me a negative pessimist
  19. I think the plan was that we had a little "mini-window" (playoff, not "contender") there with the young core on their ELC's. Worked out for one year and got them some valuable playoff experience that season. Now however, is the time to cash in some of the valuable veteran pieces he brought in, at their peak value, to support that core in THEIR upcoming prime/contention window. BUILD.
  20. Can't see, after all the comments they've made about building a contender, acquiring assets, younger, faster, lower cap etc that that would be their angle. Like at all. More likely table setting for potentially bringing back expiring cap in any potential trades to acquire those younger, faster, cheaper players, picks etc.
  21. I think we'd be looking for something like Boeser + Poolman for Marino + Kapanen/Rod and either a pick or prospect for giving up the best player. The cap works, the player swapping works etc.
