See, this is nonsense. Other than perhaps true, all around #1D (which there are less than 10 of in the entire league), ALL D will perform better with complementary partners. It's not about "propping players up". It's about putting them in position to succeed. Every player has flaws FYI. They're not robots.

[Report] Tanner Pearson to miss the remainder of 2022-23 season
aGENT replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Canucks Talk
Not including Demko (back soon presumably), we should have $9.25m of available LTIR overage (Poolman, Pearson and Ferland) and according to Capfriendly, we're currently using $4,721,546 of it. So we should be able to absorb +/- $4m (depending on how well we're maximizing our LTIR anyway). -
[Report] Klingberg submits 10 team trade list

They both do, but yes, they're very similar players. Can't believe how many people wanted him here given how poor of a fit Myers is on this roster. -
I mean sure....and if the Rangers want him great. But most teams have some sort of expiring cap coming off as well. It's basically a league min contract. I SERIOUSLY doubt it's any sort of major impediment to trading him to a team that thinks he might help them win a cup. Potential overage or otherwise. I mean that's just silly.

OEL needs a defensive leaning partner (as does Hughes). Part of the problems is us putting him in a defensive/matchup role (unsupported) vs his more natural two way OFD role as is. Having more than a couple F's who aren't allergic to paying team defense wouldn't hurt any of our D (or goalies) either.

[Rumour] Bo Horvat Trade/Contract Talks
aGENT replied to HOFsedins's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Good player but who's he playing with? Where's he getting minutes? He won't have a "Carlsson" here on his right to complement. Long term we have: Hughes, _____ OEL, _____ _____, Bear? I'd love a "Fehervary-light" type guy to play that 3LD spot...but I can't see the actual Fehervary happy in a 3LD role there. -

Canucks Management "NO-SHOW's" at STH/Memebers only meeting.
aGENT replied to RU SERIOUS's topic in Canucks Talk
If we'd done the right thing, it's hard to imagine a scenario where we didn't get more in trade for Miller than what we paid to acquire him. It's always the "right time" to add value to your franchise. That's exactly how you build a winning team, adding, multiplying and utilizing asset value. Unfortunately this management appears to be intent on squandering that added value, and extended it to a (albeit below market value) retirement contract that has basically zero chance of outperforming it's cap hit long term and doesn't fit this team's timeline. Though we still have a 5'ish month window to rectify that.... -

Oh I get that his cap (and the trade that brought him here) are both lightning rods. I just think people take a FAR too simplistic and myopic view of it, and are ignoring the plain reality that his NMC means he's likely staying here whether they wish it or not. So we best learn to work within that reality. And yes, EXACTLY re: the "atmosphere". Last year I was even more so dumbfounded by the amount of fans who wanted to move a slumping Pettersson (coming off injury, missed camp/preseason and a team playing like complete dog shite). This market is relentlessly unforgiving to players regardless of surrounding circumstances, out of the individual players control. And it's awfully difficult to get a "true" read on individual player ability under current conditions. Same on Miller. Wanted to move him for a better 2way player (even at the expense of worse offence), a pick, a prospect and cap space. Even if we weren't better THIS season with those things, it pushes the team in the direction it needs to move. Here's hoping they figure that out before his extension kicks in... The club needs to start showing what their actual plan is, and actually making progress towards that. Fans can unite behind that if we have a road map and destination to cheer for. Right now, we're without either. TDL can't come soon enough.

Why doesn't it? It's a team sport. Schenn's about the only D living up to/surpassing his contract on this club. Even the far more talented Hughes is having a pretty "meh" year, particularly in his own end. Who are all these other D on our team, having amazing years, unlike OEL? There's very few players on this entire team who've looked good this year. If you don't think that, or fit, chemistry etc matters on a team sport...not sure what to tell you. This roster is an un-cohesive mess, with no identity or ability/personnel to play D. That's not an OEL issue. And they're not robots. Some guys are going to have a tougher time than others giving the proverbial "110%" in an increasingly hopeless season.

And if you hadn't deleted major portions of my post , you'd note I think there's a strong chance he'd actually contribute closer his $7.2m hit in a properly constructed D (and forward) core, and with F's who weren't allergic to playing D/supporting the puck and if the team had anything resembling structure, or an identity. D, even ones with injury history, tend to play at a high level until 34-35, with a less steep drop off compared to F's. Again...problem.

I'm guessing both the dearth of top 4 D in the org, the desire to build off the bubble run and there was likely hope we'd eventually acquire an appropriate partner for him (Marino this summer probably would have worked, if we'd cleared the cap by simply moving Miller as we should have). But that's just a guess. And actually putting cohesive, complementary pieces together was never Benning's strong suit (which likely also explains some of it). There is however a route to build a quality D core with OEL on it. Hughes, defensive leaning D OEL, defensive leaning D Defensive leaning D, Bear But thus far, two management groups have all but gone out of their way to do the opposite. We need 2, top 4 right and one 2nd/3rd pair left D in the molds of Tanev/Cernak/Pesce/Marino/McNabb etc And regardless of what anyone thinks of the trade, he's here now. And that NMC ensures he isn't going anywhere. Best to start planning on how to build the D around the pieces that will be here, rather than stomping feet and wishing him away. And again, he's a solid, top 4 D. We could do a lot worse. It's certainly not a problem worth all the shrieking in this market about it. OEL is a problem on a roster full of PROBLEMS.
-
I don't think anyone is on a "OEL is Jesus" side. Like you said, he's a solid top 4 OFD (with a bit of 2 way ability). He's not even really overpaid based on current market prices for UFA aged D ($7.5m-$12m for first pair D). Pretty much high end 2nd pair-low end 1st pair D money. Which is exactly what he is (at least when healthy). But he's not REMOTELY been put in position to succeed here. We have no legit top 4, defense-first D to partner him (or Hughes) with (Schenn's been great but he's a 3rd/spare pair on a well built D, and he's only 1 guy) and as you said, OEL's miscast as a primary shutdown/match up role. We'd be far better off having a defense first, high-end 3rd pair guy to take that role (given that with his NMC, OEL isn't going anywhere).

No, probably not quickly. But I am interested to see what they do with Miller/Horvat/Kuzmenko/Schenn/Boeser/Garland/Myers/Pearson over this and next year. Who we get back, how much cap they clear, who we add with that cap, what kind of futures etc will all tell the tale of how they do or don't fix this roster, give it an identity and find chemistry with the guys we want to keep.
