Actually, IMO we might have seen him on Bo's LW with say one of Burr, Hansen, maybe Baer or Granlund on their off wing. But then we wouldn't have Juolevi in a couple years
-
We're also only 2 points from 28th. Sergachev is higher risk/reward. Would have loved to get him too. MT and OJ were basically equal quality according most scouts. MT was ranked higher because forwards are more predictable and require less development time. That's it. Again, you can't have all the players.
-
Are we really though? I had us pegged as a bubble playoff team (which doesn't really mean much at the end of the day) if we could stay relatively healthy. We have not remained anything close to relatively healthy. It would have also been great to get MT, sure. He's a good player. And Jost and Keller and Sergachev etc etc... Short of trading for like 10-15 first round picks, you can't have 'ALL' the players.
-
Were we going to be cup favorites with MT this year? Nope. So I'm not sure why that really matters. I'm FAR more concerned about 3 years from now personally, so that works out just fine IMO.
-
How do you know Benning didn't expect MT to breakout? Would he have broke out to the same degree in the Canucks? Perhaps Benning was thinking more about the team in 4 years vs this year? Is there something wrong with a solid #2D who thinks the game well, skates well, passes well and constantly pushes the puck the right direction and helps nullify offensive forays while maintaining offensive pressure? Sure an elite #1D is nice too but you need a #2 as well. Also: https://www.mckeenshockey.com/prospects-blog/mckeens-2016-top-30-nhl-draft-rankings-apr-2016/

2017 NHL Draft - Chicago, Illinois June 23-24 2017
aGENT replied to hyper00's topic in Prospects / Farm Team
Yup, we need more skill for sure. We're looking 'ok' on D (though Liljegren sure wouldn't hurt there either) but at forward we need some extra pieces for sure. Pretty sure that's the plan though. Boeser, a key, top 10 skilled forward likely in this draft, perhaps a trade and maybe a nice UFA in a few years and our top 9 doesn't look so bad added to Horvat, Baer, Granlund, Eriksson, Sutter and eventually, likely some mix of Gaudette, Lockwood, maybe Zhukenov etc, etc. -
2017 NHL Draft - Chicago, Illinois June 23-24 2017

Correct me if I'm wrong but this smells a bit like 'Benning only acquires meat and potatoes' nonsense I sometimes see on here which is both absurd and entirely inaccurate. And not all 'skill' players are created equal. I'd also include Liljegren in that skilled player list. -
I thought I remembered seeing one or two as well... but sure. Did you find some 'not credible' ones? Numerous scouts also said that Juolevi could go as high as 4th and that they were all basically 'interchangeable' and their draft order would highly depend on what aspects of those players teams saw as most attractive, who was drafting more for near-term returns vs long term etc. Numerous scouts mentioned Van could take OJ and that it would still be a very solid pick at 5. Players 4-8 were basically a 'tie' and most scouts said as much. And that's all that really matters vs winning some silly internet argument about how they were 'technically' ranked based largely on forwards being easier to predict and translating sooner. If anything, given that these scouts etc were all saying OJ could go as high as 4/5 despite being a longer term/less predictable D should give some insight to how well regarded he was.

From your own article: It's a draft that seems to have "layers" or "clumps" of prospects to pick from. For example, the first layer beyond the Big Three is a four-man grouping that includes three different types of wingers — Tkachuk, who is strong from the top of the circles down; Dubois, who has a strong 200-foot game; and Nylander, whose skill and hockey sense are considered elite — and the one defenceman Juolevi, who's viewed as the best all-around blueliner in the draft. They might not have had him 'ahead' of Tkachuk (due almost entirely to fowards being easier to predict and usually making the NHL sooner) but most of them made mention of how that next group were all basically interchangeable. It was not remotely 'off the board'. Because it's not about today.
-
Probably. That line would look good though IMO.
-
Be nice if we had the Utica equivalent of a 'Horvat' and a 'Hansen' to play with. Fast, skilled, north/south, hard working guys. Maybe next year (Gaudette and Lockwood)?
-
Trade a D, expose Hansen, protect Baer and Granlund. Unfortunately but manageable, lose Guance. And the only way Juolevi gets 9 games next year is if one of the top 6 is injured to start IMO.
-
He'll likely look a lot more like Tanev as his top end than Edler. He's really not like Edler at all IMO. Likely a lesser, 3rd pair version of Tanev with an outside shot of being a REALLY solid #3, defensive master like Tanev as his ceiling. Excel in his own end making smart plays, skating well, transitioning play forward and eating offensive forays for breakfast. Not overly physical or offensive but smart, tidy and moves the play the right way. Ain't nothing wrong with that.

Yup. It's unlikely to happen this year just like it's unlikely to happen most years. The GM's with the top 3 pick generally want an overpayment and it's generally not worth the cost (you lose more than you'd gain, even with a good player). We probably have a better chance of winning the lotto pick (come on #2!). But I would certainly explore it on the off chance the price could be 'reasonable'. Our 5-10 pick and an ED eligible player +/-... -
A lot, actually. As though he's had the opportunity to develop more than a handful of legit, top caliber players yet...
-
But Green can't develop talent!
-
Oh yeah, for sure I'd prefer another year of junior to rushing him to the NHL. AHL would be better though.
-
And probably junior unfortunately. I think he'll need more time, being so comparatively young, to gain more strength. He'd likely be best served in Utica though.
-
Is the WD whining an improvement over the Virtanen whining?....Maybe?
-
OJ-light IMO. Plays a similar style with good positioning, passing, smooth skating, good IQ etc. Doesn't have OJ's ceiling but could be a solid bottom pair, maybe 2nd pair in his prime if things go well.
