I'd prefer we nab a PMD myself to play with Edler myself Oldnews but otherwise your post is spot on re: the cap. Sedin, Sedin, Jensen/Burrows #6pick/prospect/UFA/Burrows, Kesler, Kassian Higgins, Horvat, Santorelli Matthias, Richardson, Burrows/prospect Sestito (spare) Hamhuis, Bieksa/Tanev Edler, Niskanen Garrison, Bieksa/Tanev Stanton, Weber (spares) Lack, Markstrom IMO, we have ready/close to ready forwards to play that 2nd line LW spot and any of Burrows/Higgins/Santorelli could fill in there if none of the prospects are ready/we can't find or squeeze a UFA under the cap. We do not have a good PMD close to ready (if at all) in our prospects however. I think it's a smarter buy. Now if Kesler does want out, then by all means we should target Stastny. But he'd slide right in to Kesler's spot in that case.

In fairness Michael Bay tends to make action/sci-fi "popcorn flicks" which Pi was in no way, shape or form trying to do.
-
Thank Gordie I'm not alone! Well terrible might be a bit strong but I thought Pi was way, WAY over-hyped for what it was. "Pretty" visuals alone do not a good movie make.

There is no evidence that we could have gotten a substantially better return for either of them. I actually think we got a good/fair return for both, all things considered.

It's actually a sign of many things including that. Way too many people trying to make it out like it's all one person's fault. Many things contributed to this miserable season. It wasn't just the players, the coaches or the previous three GM's. It was all of them. (As well as a few issues outside of the team's control.) -

[Confirmed] Jim Benning signs as new Canucks GM

That's certainly your prerogative. FYI those other threads have tons of info/opinions beyond "drivel from scouts I've already read". Certainly a lot more than you'll find or should be in a thread about a possible replacement GM (ie: not prospects/draftees). -

How is that hypocrisy? You can't fire the players and by in large it's not the core that should or will be traded/bought out. The problem is we need MORE quality players, not less. The coach did a bad job as well. They can fire him. Nope. No hypocrisy. -

Yup, the team's core IS aging. No one is denying that. That's why they need youth to come in and contribute. That still doesn't excuse the coaching errors. There's already youth on the way and presumably more coming to correct the first issue.... -

I think you missed the point. The team did not play well. Players were miss used, over used and under used, tactical errors were made etc, etc etc. If it was purely a matter of simply not enough talent to get the job done and the team was playing well and simply lost a lot of close games, hence missing the playoffs...that's one thing. I'd be more "ok" with that. Looking completely disorganized, with an abysmal defensive system, abysmal puck possession, blatant disregard for any research on playing in the West or scouting your competition etc, etc. That's bad coaching. That's HOW we missed the playoffs and it's on the coaching. -

Goodness, you and CHT... Somehow saying a lack of depth, injuries, cumulative issues with our last 3 GM's, a reduced cap AND yes, coaching decisions, all leading to this horrible season is somehow in your minds equals "pinning it all on the coaches" Do you guys even bother to read posts or just start formulating your one note responses based on ...what exactly? Coaching decisions lead to some of those injuries. Not using our best offensive players in predominately offensive rolls exacerbated our lack of scoring. Those are coaching issues and PART of the reason this season was a festering turd. Tort's is the guy responsible for that. Period. That does not mean he was the sole and only reason. So quit feigning that everyone is saying that Torts is 100% to blame. He's not nor have I actually seen anyone type anything remotely close to that. That is not a good reason to not fire someone. Gee Torts, you're not the only one who f'd up and did your job poorly...back to work with ya! -

No there isn't. That said, with better coaching decisions I believe this team's in the playoffs again. Even with the injuries/lack of depth. They likely wouldn't have done much given those injuries and lack of depth though. So perhaps it's best in the long run we got 6th pick instead Still have yet to see a cohesive argument as to why Torts shouldn't be fired. "You can't fire a guy after one year/fire the coach every year" seems to be the best anyone can come up with. I'm sorry but yes you can if they both, don't do their job and don't fit your future plans/vision. He seems like a guy I'd love to have a beer with, I even liked some of the things he did/brought as coach. But overall he did a failing job with the team and doesn't appear to fit with the new managements vision moving forward. Bye. -

For the record: -I didn't tell you to put anything anywhere. -T.L. was right, there are numerous threads on the subject -I think I'm pretty funny, T.L.'s a barrel of laughs at parties as well. -

The team struggled the last two years largely due to key injuries (Daniel, Kesler etc) and a lack of depth (youth) to support them. This year that depth was even further challenged by the cap drop and hurt even further by poor coaching decisions. The main difference/drop in performance between the 2011 team and the current team has been the slow erosion of depth which was then driven off the cliff by poor coaching decisions this year. There is no magic bullet. -

He's responsible for getting the best out of the TEAM of players provided, not just individual guys. The TEAM failed and some of the reasons fall squarely on Torts' shoulders. You could also argue that those guys got better outside of Tort's input. Perhaps Booth just finally got back up to speed? Perhaps Kassian simply matured and just started to "get it". Perhaps that line simply got chemistry from playing together? Perhaps Tanev simply followed his steady progression as a player (same can be said of Jensen)? Higgins was just his usual, steady self? Santorelli was motivated more by almost being out of the league last summer? etc, etc... -
Kesler hasn't really had a true "top 6" winger since Sundin, Demitra and to a lesser degree Samuelsson. Booth was fitting until that dirty knee on knee hit he took (and all the ensuing injuries/inconsistent play) but obviously isn't the answer. Kassian's coming along and may be a good fit if he can keep his performance and consistency from the last month or so going in to next year. That still leaves the left wing open... prospect? UFA? Trade?

Some of many of the reasons to like the guy. Unfortunately, his JOB is to get the best out of the players he's provided. Something he did a pretty poor job at. -

Are you actually this closed minded or do you just post that way? I actually posted above in this very thread that both the players and coaching have been to blame. The players need some new blood for sure. The situation is not anywhere near as close to as black and white as you're (poorly) trying to make it. How is that me "blaming the coach/all his fault"? There's plenty of blame to go around including to some degree all three previous GM's (to varying degrees), the players, the coaches and to some degree things out of their control like the lockout/cap drop, Luc Bourdon's death etc, etc... The only person who hung Torts out to dry was Torts. The rest of your post is sheer fantastical nonsense I won't bother responding to. -

Who brought up Mason Raymond? Or called Torts "Hitler? It certainly wasn't me, so I have no idea why you're quoting me in some off tangent rant... It's pretty hard to take you seriously with your name calling, berating and off tangent rants. I still have yet to see a cohesive argument as to why Torts shouldn't be fired from you. Maybe give that a shot if you can manage it (hint: try avoiding Raymond, AV, Gillis, Hitler and name calling and stick to how Torts actually did at coaching the players he had).
