The "I would like to see Torts stay for at least one more year" thread.

And grasping what straws? The other poster made a nonsense comment that was not borne out by facts. I simply stated as such. Perhaps you should try actually debating points rather than your usual tactics of name calling and deflecting? -

I'm not sure why you have such difficulty with this concept but have you considered that it's all three? The players need a youth injection, AV's message had grown stale, Torts did a largely poor job. All three needed/need addressing and Torts IMO has shown very little reason to believe he's "part of the solution". -

Weren't the Sedins (the oldest players on the team FWIW) two of the very few players to actually pass his pre-season fitness testing? Wasn't Kesler's playing ~25 minutes a night an endorsement of Tort's faith he could play those minutes/that style. Your statement is having trouble holding water... -

There are a half a dozen 'draft' threads discussing all of the top 10. -
A better supporting cast (and depth), coaching and some injury luck and they likely can.
-
I will be positively giddy if we get him (or D.C. for that matter).

I'll grant him that the team is on the more stale side of the "freshness scale". That requires some quality youth coming in from below that simply was largely not available this year to help prop up the aging core (see: San Jose). There is nothing wrong with the core as it is. The Sedins, Kesler, Bieksa and Hamhuis should and likely will all be retained (short of Kesler ACTUALLY wanting out which I very much doubt). What is and has been lacking is quality, young players on ELC's, bridge contracts etc to give quality depth around those players and cap space to sign/trade for players we may lack in our own prospects. Those guys need to play with and learn from the current core in order to become the next one. Thankfully for Linden (and us fans) Gillis had already started down that path with moving Corey/Roberto, restocking the prospect cupboards the last couple years and structuring contracts set to expire over the next couple seasons. Frankly the forwards are easy to "fix". Buyout (or if possible trade) Booth, likely trade Hansen, re-sign Santorelli and our RFA's and you've opened spots for youth and gained back assets or cap space. Kassian keeps improving, Jensen or another prospect makes the jump full time to the top 6, Horvat makes the team on the third line...maybe we sign/trade for a top 6 forward and *poof* a far better team and depth than this season with far more quality prospects (Gaunce, Cassels, Fox, Shinkaruk, Zalewski, Kenins etc) in Utica to call up in case of injuries. IMO, Trev's hardest work (and one of Gillis' errors) lies in fixing the logjam of 2-4 D (with no true #1, PMD or big, mean crease clearer in the lot). Not to mention the young guys who are going to start to need playing time at this level soon (Stanton, Corrado) and in the coming 3+ years (Blain, Tommernes, Hutton, Suban, Cedarholm etc). Someone is going to have to be convinced to waive their NTC. Perhaps playing next season on the bottom pairing/pressbox helps encourage that...?

I'm leaning towards those guys but we'll see who gets picked ahead of us... -
Another complaint I have about 12YAS was that I found the score quite jarring at times actually taking me out of the story. Zimmer could have used some more subtlety IMO rather than trying to hit me over the head with the musical "drama".

All teams are building towards that "model" though. Some have more skill, some have more size, some have more speed etc but the basic framework is the same regardless. You just fill in the gaps a bit differently depending on who you already have on your roster, who you draft, who you sign, your budget, your coaches, management etc, etc It's not the "Boston model", it's the NHL model. Success on building it has many variables including quality management experience and player assessment. Two things Benning has in spades which is why he's likely on the top of the short list. Again, the "copying the Boston model" line is a silly oversimplification of a very complex subject. I can already see it will be nauseously over-used in the media and regurgitated here. Right up there with lines like "country club" -
Watched 12 Years a Save last night and have to say I wish I'd read the book after. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NIqodUJ-UfM Don't get me wrong, the movie was VERY good, and most of the acting was stellar but as disturbing as many of the scenes (Pastey's whipping in particular) were, it didn't touch the drudgery, despair, cruelty and hopelessness that the book does. In fact it may have been a better mini-series to better translate the weight of time and oppression (and detail) that I feel the movie had to downplay because of the obvious restrictions of the medium. That said, on it's own I'd still give it a solid 9/10. It really is an EXCELLENT movie with a supremely talented cast. I just wish it hadn't felt as much like a "Coles Notes" version of the book as it did. For any of you who enjoyed the film....I HIGHLY recommend the book. Also watched Saving Mr. Banks this weekend. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ujxpk2IdDmM I was pleasantly surprised by this very adult treatment of the origins of a very beloved children's movie. It was unexpectedly mature and well done IMO. Thompson was excellent as always and Hanks did a good job channeling Walt. Farrell also does a good job as the father with Buckley doing excellent work as the childhood daughter (where are they finding all these kids with excellent acting chops?!) 7.5/10

I still think this "copying Boston" thing is being overblown by the media. Gee a team with a mix of size, grit, skill, speed and can put pucks in the net and keep them out of their own. Has Boston got a copyright on that? Like I said a couple pages ago: -

Personally I think the "let's copy Boston" thing is being overblown in regards to Benning. If he gets hired it's because he has 20 years experience, a cup, excellent drafting and contract record, was once a Canuck and Linden team mate and perhaps most importantly would be the ideal "yang" to Trevor's "ying". He has the exact things Trevor lacks (experience, contracts, "nuts and bolts" etc) and Trevor has the things he lacks (Personality, PR presence etc). They both have lots of hockey knowledge and would make an excellent team IMO. That he happens to currently work for Boston is more a matter of coincidence IMO. He could currently be working for the 'Canes for all I care. Though I do like that his time in Boston has likely given him ties to the leagues power brokers. That could also help us out. None of that has anything to do with "copying Boston" though. To me that's a very simplistic commentary. -

Wish we could just cut to the chase and hire him! I'm very pro-moving forward. I'd like to get this last year of misery in the rear view mirror -

We should ask TML if that might be enough for Bettman to let us win the lotto pick? -
So we're sitting currently at a 4.7% chance at the lottery pick eh?
-
Then they can all meet in the mem cup!

Horvat (as I'm sure Little and Scheifele can as well) can also play wing. Merci's right, Horvat wouldn't be redundant on ANY team. They'd either simply have more depth or the ability to move a lesser player. Any NHL team would gladly take him off our hands. -
Yeah sorry if you've got a Swede, Fin, N.A. etc player anywhere close to the same talent level at the spot your picking and there's also a Russian...you don't pick the Russian. The only way you do is either on a high "sure thing" first rounder who's CLEARLY a better player or maybe in a later round where it's a crap shoot anyway. Even then, again you pick a comparable player from elsewhere. Just too risky to waste picks on a guy that may bolt to the K at any moment.

There's certainly a risk we could lose him to another organization just as I'm sure the Bruins would rather not lose Benning. Such is life. -

Unfortunate we'll likely have to wait ~2 months before we find out.... -
There's a VAST difference between "tough" questions and "tabloid" questions.
