  10. This will be a tough matchup, but we have a chance for an upset Season Series: Kelowna won 5-2-1-0 This is another captivating series and won’t be a walk in the park for Kelowna, which battled Brandon for first-place overall throughout the regular season. It will be more like a walk in New York City’s Central Park late at night. Scary, to say the least. Stylistically, Victoria could be a “bad” matchup for the Rockets. The Royals like it rough-and-tumble and are built for playoff-type wars. Their coach, grizzled former NHL grinder Dave Lowry, would welcome some old-time hockey as it would favour his current club. Kelowna could also be without its two biggest physical presences for the series opener, with Chance Braid serving a one-game suspension and Tyrell Goulbourne having been injured in Game 2 against Tri-City. The latter’s status is unknown, but both would be sorely missed when the Royals try to impose their will by pushing around the Rockets. Kelowna needs its league-best power play to act as a deterrent to Victoria’s feistiness. The Rockets were only 3-for-17 (17.6 per cent) with the man advantage against Tri-City, down from 26.2 per cent (90-344) during the regular season. If Kelowna can capitalize on power plays early in the series and force Victoria to play a skill game, that should be beneficial to the Rockets. In saying that, the Royals acquired forwards Greg Chase and Alex Forsberg this season to add skill up front and they delivered in the first-round win over Prince George. If those two could somehow outscore or at least offset Kelowna’s dynamic duo of Rourke Chartier and Nick Merkley, then Victoria would have a fighting chance. Both teams get plenty of offence from their back end, and Kelowna would get a big boost if Josh Morrissey was able to return from a leg injury. Goaltending will be a big factor here too. Kelowna will likely go back to Jackson Whistle, who was pulled in the clincher against Tri-City but previously had two shutouts and came a minute shy of breaking Kelly Guard’s franchise record of 155 minutes 8 seconds without a goal against in the playoffs. Victoria is riding Coleman Vollrath, who helped the Royals get past the Cougars despite getting outshot in four of the five contests. He posted a 24-save shutout in the other and will enter this series as the more confident of the two masked men, but that can certainly change in a period or two. Vollrath turned 20 in January and Whistle will celebrate the same birthday in June, with both having made 114 career regular-season appearances with similar statistics. Whistle has played behind the better team and boasts a .910 save percentage with a 2.61 goals-against average to Vollrath’s .909 and 2.88. But this series, be it four games or seven, will largely define their WHL tenure as a whole. http://thehockeywriters.com/whl-playoff-predictions-round-2/ First 2 games are in Kelowna on Fri. and Sat. night

  12. Now we play Kelowna VICTORIA 5 PRINCE GEORGE 4 Hockeyville, indeed. The Victoria Royals put the exclamation point on a big Saturday in hockey for a city better known for its rowers, triathletes, runners, swimmers, cyclists and rugby and soccer players. No sooner had the jubilation subsided in North Saanich, winner of the national Kraft Hockeyville balloting, than the Royals lit up Blanshard Street with a 5-4 playoff victory on an overtime goal by Brandon Magee. It gave Victoria a 4-1 series win over the Prince George Cougars in the first-round Western Hockey League series. Royals forward Brandon Magee went from despair, with a careless delay-of-game penalty that allowed Prince George to tie the game late in regulation time, to scoring the overtime winner at 1:42. “It was only fitting that I scored the winning goal after that penalty,” said a relieved Magee. It was only the second playoff series victory in the nine-year history of the Chilliwack Bruins/Royals franchise, following up last year’s first-round sweep of the Spokane Chiefs. “Saving 26 hours on the bus [to a potential Game 6 Monday in Prince George and back] was a motivating thing for us,” said Magee. The Cougars played as well as a team can in losing a series by three games. The last six minutes of regulation time Saturday were a whirlwind, which left the 5,839 fans in the Memorial Centre nearly hoarse. Zach Pochiro’s third goal of the game tied it 3-3 for Prince George at 14:00 of the third period. Greg Chase’s third of the game looked to have it won for Victoria at 15:16. But then came what could have been one of the costliest penalties in the franchise when the veteran Magee needlessly cleared a loose puck over the end boards in his own zone. Prince George, as it has done so often in the series, won the draw. That allowed the Cougars’ fine offensive-oriented defenceman Josh Connolly to tie it 4-4 on the power play at 18:46. It was Prince George’s eighth power-play goal of the series A three-goal, first-period blitz, with two of them scored by Chase, staked Victoria to a 3-1 lead. Chase’s first goal came on the power play. The other for Victoria in the first came from Brandon Fushimi on an opportunistic wrap-around. Prince George answered in the first period with a goal by Pochiro, the St. Louis Blues-prospect who got in eight games of pro this season with the Alaska Aces of the ECHL. Pochiro then absolutely tattooed a power-play slapshot to the back of the net at 15:14 of the second period to bring the Cougars to within one at 3-2. He would be heard from again. That PG goal was assisted by Jansen Harkins, the 18th-ranked North American skater for the 2015 NHL draft. Neither team gave up, said Chase, who is under NHL contract to the Edmonton Oilers. The Royals advance to the B.C. Division final, which are also the Western Conference semifinals, against the conference and league top-seed Kelowna Rockets. The best-of-seven series begins next Friday and Saturday in the Okanagan. The third and fourth games are the following Tuesday/Wednesday, April 14-15, in Victoria. - See more at: http://www.timescolonist.com/sports/victoria-royals-win-playoff-series-over-prince-george-in-ot-thriller-1.1814429#sthash.xsVMFMHb.dpuf

  15. Big win at home by the Royals last night 5-3 Magee was a beast with the Hatty and a 4 point night Next game is tonight in VIC The Victoria Royals held off a spirited effort from the Prince George Cougars, playing their first playoff game since 2011, to record a 5-3 victory Friday night before 4,629 fans at Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre. The B.C. Division second-seed Royals lead the best-of-seven opening-round Western Hockey League playoff series 1-0, with Game 2 tonight in the Memorial Centre. There was no rust on this Cat, as the B.C. Division third-seed Cougars led 2-0 after the opening period on the first two of their three power-play goals on the night. “We knew [Cougars] would come with desperation, and we played with nerves in the first period, until we settled in,” said Royals head coach Dave Lowry. “In the playoffs, you have to stay level and can’t get too caught up in the emotion.” Veteran Royals forward Brandon Magee delivered a hat-trick in the second period to stake Victoria to a 4-2 lead heading into the final period. The game hung in the balance until Taylor Crunk’s empty-net goal decided it late in the third. “[Cougars] special teams had a lot of compete tonight. We were fortunate to come back. That was the result of sticking to our game plan. Our leadership group did a good job of staying calm,” said Magee, of the first-period shocker Victoria faced. “I got a couple of lucky bounces in the second period [for the hat-trick],” added the self-effacing Magee, of his four-point night. It was the second playoff hat-trick in the nine-year history of the Chilliwack Bruins/Royals franchise, the first coming from graduated Royals forward Jamie Crooks exactly three years ago to the day in a first-round game against Kamloops. The game turned in the second period on not only Magee’s three goals, but also a remarkable individual effort goal from Royals forward Greg Chase, who showed why he is under NHL contract to the Edmonton Oilers. Chase undressed the Cougars defence to give Victoria the 3-2 lead at 12:20 of the second. The night was instructional. “You can’t get too high or too low in the playoffs,” said Chase. “We did a good job of staying even-keeled. It’s a long series.” Victoria goalkeeper Coleman Vollrath made the save of the game at a key juncture in the middle period, sliding to his right on a two-on-one Prince George break to take away a goal from Chase Witala. Alex Forsberg and defenceman Joe Hicketts had two assists each for Victoria. The Cougars, with a roster boasting only 28 games of WHL playoff experience compared to Victoria’s 207, got odd-man goals from Witala, Tate Olson and Kody McDonald. Victoria’s sixth-ranked power play was ineffectual at 0-3 against the worst penalty-killing team in the WHL. Vollrath made 28 saves for Victoria and Ty Edmonds 20 for Prince George. ICE CHIPS: Sixteen-year-old rookie Josh Anderson of Duncan, the six-foot-three Canada U-17 defenceman considered the future of the Cougars blue-line, was a scratch Friday. http://www.timescolonist.com/sports/victoria-royals-rally-for-series-opening-win-1.1807497

  17. Virtanen has a ways to go before he could reach what Kesler had accomplished on this team, like getting caught being with a teammate's fiance, having the "A" yanked off his sweater by his teammates in the dressing room and given to Bieksa, then demanding a trade to only one team, because he doesn't want his kids growing up in the "fishbowl" of Vancouver because he is such a caring family man. I don't want Jake anything like d-bag Kesler.

  19. Bruce Arthur Tor. Star beat reporter has lost it! The Sorry State of Toronto Sports Teams By Bruce Arthur The Toronto Star It’s not all bad, right? I mean sure, we still have the crumbling infrastructure, the lack of a comprehensive transit plan, idiots on council, traffic for days, this deathly winter, and the gradual melting of black snowbanks filled with cigarette butts and hardened gum and cans and junk and the trash of a people who believe that once you throw something into a snowbank it will never come back, because winter will never end. It’s like Everest that way, where the human feces deposited by generations of climbers has become a problem, along with the frozen dead bodies along the trails, in their rainbow array of jackets. That’s Toronto. And this is Toronto sports in the spring. Marcus Stroman was probably going to be the best pitcher for the Toronto Blue Jays, and then he was doing a bunt drill in Dunedin, one he’d done a million times before. Josh Donaldson, the new guy who was their best off-season acquisition, called him off. So, of course, Stroman blew his ACL and he’s out for the year. Goodnight. Now, you can blame the fact that the Jays have a lousy spring-training facility, where last month Michael Saunders tore his meniscus stepping on a sprinkler head, and this injury happened on artificial turf, like the stuff that pounds players at the Rogers Centre. Maybe you can blame the cheapness that wraps itself around this team. But Stroman found the trap door. Jonah Keri of Grantland, a good Canadian and a baseball expert, had Stroman near the top of his list for breakout players this season. The 23-year-old only threw 130 innings last year, but he was poised to be a stud, a fun pitcher. Mark Buehrle and R.A. Dickey throw 200 innings every year, as if they are human seasons. But the Jays needed young arms, and now will have to rely on Aaron Sanchez and Daniel Norris and J.A. Happ replacement Marco Estrada. It’s not the end of the world, if only because Toronto’s traffic tomorrow will still be insane. But you expected this, right? You were waiting for this, even if you didn’t know it. The Blue Jays find the potholes. The Blue Jays find the ruts. The Blue Jays crack an axle, blow their shocks, have their tires explode in the driveway. Brett Cecil’s shoulder hurts, Jose Bautista had a tight hamstring, and Edwin Encarnacion has a sore back, just for kicks. Toronto. Because like life, Toronto finds a way. The Toronto Raptors were the beacon for a long time, and are still going to make the playoffs, and they could win 50 games, the most in team history. And right now they have lost eight of their last nine plus a win against Philadelphia, and they are 14-17 in 2015, and Kyle Lowry hasn’t been himself in two months and maybe something’s going wrong. Some fans have already decided that it’s pointless, they’re doomed, even if the schedule is going to lighten up down the stretch. Might even be true. Hey, at least it beats watching Andrea Bargnani, right? He’s fourth all-time in franchise points and rebounds and fifth in blocks, and he beat the Raptors a week and a half ago, providing four of the saddest words in the English language: Andrea Bargnani Revenge Game. Bad times. The Leafs, meanwhile . . . well, the Leafs. This is the part where we look at each other, make fleeting eye contact, nod grimly, and stare into the distance as the cold sun dips down across the city. Then maybe we’ll talk about how maybe spring is coming, and we’ll be able to see if the house keys are still where we dropped them, in that snowbank. But the Leafs are mining new depths of toxicity, day after day. This implosion actually feels like the culmination of all the other implosions, lumped together into a great terrible ball. Salutegate, Kessel, Phaneuf, Kadri, the endless series of sideshows, and a team that has plummeted far enough into the abyss to make people actually stop watching the games, but not so far that they have the best chance at one of the two generational players at the top of the draft. At least they traded David Clarkson, though. That was this year’s Stanley Cup. Yes, Toronto. The Raptors have won one five-game playoff series in 20 years. The Leafs have made the playoffs once in the last 10 years, and it was memorable. TFC missed the playoffs in its first eight seasons, and the current optimism is still so young. The Toronto Argonauts won a Grey Cup three years ago and are for sale, potentially homeless, and largely ignored. If they get a home, it will screw TFC. The circle of life. Maybe it’s a curse. Maybe Toronto offended some ancient gods, unearthed some kind of virus, caught something from Cleveland or Buffalo. We elected Rob Ford and never built enough subways and think we’re the centre of the universe, and now Marcus Stroman has fallen to whatever we have committed, erected, left fallow or lost. Toronto, devourer of dreams. Wait, no, hold on, wait. Maybe it’s not that bad. The Raptors could still win a playoff series. Leafs management is thinking smarter than it has in ages. The Argos deal probably gets done. Spring is coming, and the restaurants are pretty good, and you can’t beat the multiculturalism, and Stroman will come back next year. And I mean, at least it wasn’t his elbow, or his shoulder. Yet.
