  1. But as for poor customer service stories, I've had far too many from the same companies that give you few choices to go elsewhere and not receive the same crappy customer service. - Banks (currently at ATB...that's ALBERTA Treasury Branch...their customer "service" team is somewhere in the Philippines). - Cell phone providers (they all suck, and - same for comment below - Telus is also located offshore) - Cable and INet providers (what country would ever allow a private corporation to own the infrastructure...like we do in Canada / USA) So, so many others. Car dealerships, clothing stores, fast food restaurants...basically anywhere that you would expect even the basic common decent customer courtesy...it's pretty much all gone bye-bye now...you get what you get.
  2. Oddly enough, the answer to both the AV program story and the motorcycle story is the same...Norton...always get every product you can called Norton...it will drive your friends nuts every time they ask what brand you buy.
  3. Does anyone know if the All Star Skills comp on FRI and the game itself on SAT are on NHL Center Ice?
  4. Living in Alberta has certainly caused many of us to rethink our economic strategies. For example: 1/ I switched to Kirkland caviar and champagne, it tastes just the same. 2/ I turned the heat down in the sauna and hot tub when not in use. 3/ I switched from Premium 91 Octane to Mid-Grade 89 Octane in both the Rolls and the R8. 4/ I don't throw away my ties anymore...I wait about 6 months then re-use them (so far nobody has noticed). 5/ I don't tip the shoeshine boy anymore...the cost of the shoeshine is his reward. 6/ If we run low on bread, I just eat cake.
  5. Sorry, for those of us who don't use social media a lot...what's EBUG?
  6. Which is the original premise of the post. IF plenty of players would be scrambling to play with McDavid, then why can't Edmonton seem to sign any high profile FA's? They over paid for Hyman and they have over paid before for players just to convince them to play in Edmonton. If McDavid played for NYR or LA instead, there'd be no problem. Edmonton = tire dump fire, sure there's heat coming off that thing but my gosh, the smell is horrendous! In the interests of all 32 teams (think of the NHL as one business with 32 owners), McDavid is better off (and the NHL is better off) if he played for one of the higher profile teams...move the mansion away from the dump.
  7. You're right, but, my analogy would be like owning a mansion at the corner of Main St & E.Hastings. You can claim all you want that it's worth 20 million dollars, but you'd have a tough time finding anyone to pay it.
  8. Where does that leave them cap-wise? And to re-sign Kakko?
  9. I thought about NYR as well since they have an expendable starting G in Georgiev. Problem with NYR is the future cap situation...their best pieces to trade out are on ELD's which would leave then way over cap now OR if they traded away pieces with salary then they're in cap hell when they go to re-sign Kakko and LaFrenchie. At least Boston will fit capwise and then they get to dump Bergeron's salary when he retires so they can sign the young ones...better fit for future cap situation.
  10. So, what is wrong with the Edmonton Oilers? Oh, let me count the ways... In my opinion, the single biggest problem with the Edmonton Oilers is their mismanagement of numerous #1 overall picks (well documented, no need to go into it here). But the single largest mismanagement has been the trade value of the face of the NHL, Connor McDavid. The NHL has 5 current "high value market" teams that represent the NHL market on a global scale: Toronto, New York, Boston, Los Angeles & now Las Vegas...and I believe that McDavid should be playing for one of them. Forget LA and LV...I don't want McDavid in our Conference. Toronto has the pieces to make a trade but would gain very little in doing so (ie/ McDavid is less valuable to them than the other 2). So that leaves NYR and BOS. I feel like NYR is headed in the right direction, and any pieces they send back would leave them in Cap hell (where the Oilers are now), so by default, we have the Bruins. Here's the proposal: TO BOS #97 and his 14.25m cap hit TO COILERS Swayman (their new starting goaltender project) Carlo (new top pair Nurse / Carlo) DeBrusk (hey, we figured he was headed there all along anyways) Coyle (gotta make space for their new Centre who will replace Bergeron as captain and face of the franchise) 2022 1st Heck of a haul for Edmonton, heck of a giveaway for Boston. Edmonton slides Draisaital to 1C, Coyle & RNH slot into 2C & 3C In one move the Oilers fix multiple issues (Starting G, weak Defence, lack of scoring depth and 3C issues) Bruins get the new Captain and face of the franchise for the next 1/2 decade + and they retain a formidable top 6 (McDavid, Hall, Marchand, Bergeron, Pastrnak and room for one of their up and comers like Senyshyn to take a top 6 spot). Anyways, seems like a win-win. Not many teams in the NHL would have what it takes to pry McDavid free (cap space and players / picks / prospects) but this should get the deal done. OK...other than the obvious argument that Holland would be run out of town if he ever traded McDavid...flame away...
  11. Halak needs to go before he plays 10 games, unless we're in on him longer term. If he plays 10 games and his bonus kicks in (1.25m) it counts against our cap even if we trade him after the 10...so it's either cut bait now or in for the balance. BUT...I don't think the Oilers are this desperate, there will be better options available either now or at the TDL.
  12. Of course it is...Rogers owns hockey. This reminds me of early mafia tactics in NYC...money fixes everything I guess. I just absolutely REFUSE to cave in to their BS cheesy tactics. OK, gotta take my tinfoil hat off now, starting to get an itchy head.
  13. Not sure if mentioned yet...CBC streaming feed is crap...keeps dropping out. Anyone know WTF is going on? Rogers just trying to convince me to pay them some cash to get a clean feed?
  14. I only cheer for 2 teams in the NHL 1/ The Nux 2/ Whoever is playing Calgary
  15. THIS By saying that Aquaman wouldn't allow a full rebuild, is in essence saying that we need a rebuild because there is something wrong with the on-ice talent that requires such. The NY Islanders have been a good playoff team for the past 3 seasons, finishing top 4 for the past 2 playoffs, and look where they are this year. But not many are concerned about what's wrong with the Islanders because, hey, look at their lineup...they OVER achieved for the past 3 years. Now look at our lineup...save for Demko, JT and Hughes, we are grossly UNDER achieving this season. The factors that I see contributing to this mess are: 1/ Slow starts for Hughes and Pettersson after missing TC and pre-season (Hughes has caught up, Petey hasn't...yet) 2/ Lingering effects of COVID on a few players...not many, but a few (it effects everyone differently)...look at our 3rd period performances, no gas in the tank. 3/ Leadership issues in the dressing room...we have a split dressing room (10 Canadians, 8 Americans, 3 Swedes, and mostly young players)...sometimes it can be difficult to learn who to follow and often times that can get you into trouble when you're 21-25 years old. This is why so many teams point to "veteran" leadership. In our dressing room we have a younger leader (Bo) and an older leader (JT)...and no Tanev to kind of mediate. Shouldn't be (or need to be) that way, but it is what it is. 4/ The situation of a holdout can have a dismantling effect on team unity...we had 2, and those 2 were key foundation pieces...that can have a rattling effect on a team's foundation, it will take time to reconcile that back to a squad first mentality. 5/ Some new coaches, new ideas, new systems. I know professionals are taught to be open and adaptable, but when you add in all of the above distraction it can have a damaging effect on focus. Honestly, I'm OK if we ride out this year, come what comes, and re-group for next season. If we were to come back next fall with exactly the same players, the same coaches and the same systems, I'll bet that without all of the noise around the team, we'd have better results. So no, I don't agree that the problem is ownership...it certainly isn't the coaching staff, and it can only marginally be blamed on management. I think JB has made some good moves, some good scouting, but he's also botched a few picks and trades...so he's an average GM, probably about reached his potential in Vancouver so it may be time to move on, but overall we have a pretty good team. After-all, if we didn't have a pretty good team then nobody would be surprised about where we are in the standings...but I think every hockey pundit out there agrees, the Vancouver Canucks are a good team that is way under-achieving...hence all the media noise.
  16. It's not how rich the TV rights are in Arizona, it's how much richer they are in Houston vs. Quebec City. Good point about the arena sizes, but in reality, both are suitable. So what tips the decision to one city over the other? I say it's still the value of the TV contract. When Atlanta moved to Winnipeg, there wasn't a 2 Billion dollar TV contract, in the US, on the table...now there is...it changes the conversation. Post COVID (meaning very soon after COVID) revenues are critical...if this was to occur 5 years from now, then I think QC has a better shot. But right now, in the realm of athletic sponsorship funds, I think the NHL would be better to look for those TV rights $$$...and there's just more of them $$$ in Houston than there are in QC. In all reality, chances are one of two things will happen: 1/ A deal gets done before next season and this was all smoke and mirror posturing by each side or; 2/ There is a temporary location set up until a more permanent solution can be meted out ie/ Tucson arena...it holds 6800 fans, which is about all that the Yotes have anyways (they've averaged 12,000 fans per game and I'd bet at least a 1/3 of those are empty corporate seats).
  17. Some definitions: Expansion team players - this is the NHL's equivalent of your storage shed...stuff you aren't currently using, stuck in storage, and some thief broke in and stole some of it. PTO players - this is the NHL's equivalent of Thrift Store merchandise...given away by the owner but might still have some value, at a greatly reduced price, to a new owner. Waiver wire players - NHL's equivalent of garbage...and some loser comes along and decides to dumpster dive for free stuff. If you're going to dumpster dive for free stuff, then do it in the high end neighborhoods...don't head to the slums to dumpster dive, some of that stuff has disease...
  18. Are we not concerned that, although things seem to be going poorly, we would be remotely interested in grabbing a player off of waivers from a team that a] is below us in the standings and b] was considered spare parts by another club in order for the expanding club to pick him up in the first place? Sounds like a solid AHL'er to me...
  19. They are 1st in the Central Division. Whatever aspirations they had at rebuilding, might be shelved as they are over-achieving and might actually have decent playoff chances now. If they add a legit top 6 scorer, and then pickup a Dman to replace Dumba at the tradeline (even a rental) they might actually be convinced to move him for Boeser. I don't necessarily agree with your assessment of Dumba...he might not be a Chris Tanev, but he's also not Tyler Myers...he's somewhere in between. To me, Hughes/Myers with OEL/Dumba would be better than having Hamonic in our top 4...and having another Dman that can make a decent first pass (without turning over the biscuit) might actually bolster our offense more-so than having a finisher that doesn't get the chance to do his thing. I always say, build the team from the backend out, then build down the middle, then add the complimentary pieces.
  20. Probably just a friendly "keeping the door open" conversation. 1/ The NHL gains "ZERO" by putting a team in Quebec. The Canadian TV rights contract is small compared to the US one...and it isn't like Quebec hockey viewers aren't already supporting as much as they can / are willing to...putting a team in Quebec isn't going to suddenly increase the value of the Canadian TV revenue stream more than an additional US market would...and... 2/ Having said that, Houston is primed for a transfer from Phoenix. 4th largest TV audience in the US. NHL ready arena (17,800 seat Toyota Center). Deeper connections to the Central Division and natural rivalry with Dallas.
  21. We're only a couple of pieces away from being a top 16 (Playoff) team...we need a higher end RD and a solid 2nd/3rd line sniper (one that can slide up/down as needed / PP sniper)...therefore no need for a rebuild, just a quick retool. It's the player systems that need tweaking (especially our special teams). Not ready to give up on this core. If there's a new coaching team soon, new systems that play to our team's strengths, improved special teams play, then I would say the core is A-OK. If they still can't get it together then blow it up and try again.
  22. He won't get the chance...the new Pres of Hockey Ops won't let him...plus he'll be gone before the draft.
  23. Boeser for Dumba straight up...keep our 1st. BB is from Minnesota, Dumba is from Western Canada...might be a perfect trade.
  24. 1/ I object to the expression "whipping boy". It drums up images of racist southern slave owners who were allowed to whip their slaves for deeds that they deemed to be punishable...no judge or jury, just ol' fashioned slave owner justice. 2/ Now having said that, my whipping boy this year will be OEL...too much cash for what he will bring. SIGNED / typical whiny protesting millennial hypocrite (I'm actually a GEN-Xer...just trying my best impression of a GEN-Y)
