Gandhi was certainly one of the great orators and philosophers of our modern era. He said 2 things about Christianity that really stood out to me: 1/ He addressed what some others on here have expressed about organized religion. He said that he loves the Christ, it's Christians he can't stand. And I feel for the most part that this covers a lot of hypocrisy we see in organized religion. The bible (the most widespread publication...ever) actually tells us to follow in the Christ's footsteps, treat people how they deserve to be treated, take care of the earth, take care of the animals etc AND to worship God in a manner that is proper (which includes the aforementioned following of Christ's fine example). Problem is, so many today ignore that advice for personal gain or comfort...go to church on Sunday, embezzle from their employer on Monday. I can see where Gandhi got that thought from for sure. I wish Christians would behave more Christ-like. 2/ Secondly he stated that the world would be a far better place overall if everyone just lived their lives according to the most amazing speech ever given, the speech by Jesus called the "Sermon on the Mount". Its opening words seem to reflect what a lot on here are relating "Happy is the person conscious of their spiritual need" [MATT 5:3]. There's an old saying (very appropriate for today - NOV 11th), there are no atheists in foxholes. In human's deepest darkest hours of distress, they will pray to God. The question becomes then (kind of tied in to point #1 above), what about the happy times? Birth of a child or grandchild? Graduation day? Promotion at work? etc etc. We pray to God to help when we are down, but seem to forget the wonderful things he does to help us all the other times. And on a personal note, for the ones who feel closest to God when they are out in nature, take note of these 2 scriptures: ISAIAH 40:26 - Lift up your eyes to heaven and see. Who has created these things? It is the One who brings out their army by number; He calls them all by name. Because of his vast dynamic energy and his awe-inspiring power, Not one of them is missing. ROMANS 1:20 - For his invisible qualities are clearly seen from the world’s creation onward, because they are perceived by the things made, even his eternal power and Godship, so that they are inexcusable.

Back right before the crash of 2008-2009 I moved to the Roanoke Virginia area to work for an import export company. I asked for my exact same wage in US$ as I was making in CDN$ (not exchange rated, the same dollar figure). I paid about $11,000 / yr less in taxes in the US (but did have to pay $250 / mo health insurance with a 5K deductible so I suppose that's close to balancing out if I needed to use it). The single biggest difference (besides the taxes) that I noticed was the cost (and selection) of groceries...not even close. Four bags of groceries here was about $75-80. Down there I shopped at the Walmart SuperCentre and pushed an entire buggy full of groceries past the checkout for $87. We pay WAY more up here for groceries, and for our extra cost we receive less than half the selection. I realize that things have changed in the past decade, but even if we were balanced and paying about the same for Cost of Living, you still can't compare the selection available to the American consumer vs. the Canadian consumer. Plus for some bizarre reason they call Rockets (small sugar candies in a cellophane roll) "Smarties"...and if you want Canadian Smarties (candy coated chocolate ones), you have to go to the import food section under "British" foods...bizarre... -

Jiminy Crickets! I remember the Howie Meeker Hockey School...I think it was in Duncan or somewhere on the island...anyways, great loss.

Eriksson - MNTC Sutter - MNTC My question would be...once a player waives his NTC or NMC does it permanently come off his contract or is it reinstated when he joins his new team? Sutter's ends next year so not a big deal, but Loui will need automatic protection from Seattle if in fact the NTC stays intact...it make Loui's contract almost IMPOSSIBLE to move if that is the case...not sure a team would want to waste a protection slot on an over-the-hill player and potentially lose an up-and-comer who would otherwise need protection. If possible, the best candidate for a trade would be a team that has a number of young players under automatic protection, therefore they can burn a slot on Loui.

Thanks Sharpshooter, but honestly it was a long time ago (82 - 88) and only for a relatively short time (6 years). So many countless others have sacrificed so much more (including the ultimate sacrifice) and for so much longer than I did...THEY are the ones that deserve the thanks so much more. But more importantly, the greatest way to honour their service and sacrifice is by living our lives in a way that never restricts the freedom of another (within the confines of common law of course). I was once asked to define what personal rights mean...and I answered "your personal rights end when they impose on my personal rights". The example at that time was a neighbour who decided that the entire neighbourhood was going to listen to his music (at 11pm) as loud as it would go. I let him know that he can play his music as loud as he wanted as long as it didn't interfere with other person's rights to quiet at that time. So take the party inside the house and crank it up all he wants...both people 's rights are respected.

Again, every year some sort of poppy debate comes up...but this one might actually take the cake. As a veteran myself I like to reiterate (seems like every year I have to do this) what it is that we have fought for, and continue to fight for...FREEDOM. Usually the debate surrounds the form of poppy that someone wants to wear...and I say, wear one or don't, that's your choice, and it's the whole point of the sacrifices that were made, so you have a choice. When someone or some entity (government or corporation) wants to limit or take a way the very freedom that is the central point of it all, well...then I guess they miss the point altogether.

OOOF...How did I miss Ronny S! My bad...very very bad. I think my wife needs to paddle my bottom for that one!

I'm going with the player at their peak when with the Canucks (not elsewhere). The Canucks have only had 2 players to score 50 or more goals in a season...Pavel Bure (3) & Alex Mogilny (1) so those 2 will be my top line snipers. We have had 6 different players eclipse the 40 goal plateau (Rota, Tanti - 3 times, Naslund - 3 times, Bertuzzi, Kesler & Danny S.) As for setup men, there has only been 1 Canucks player who has provided 80+ assists in a season (Hank - once) and only 1 player to setup his teammates 70+ times in a season (same guy, Hank - 3 times). So to dip down a bit to the 60+ assists category we get Hank again (3 times...wow, that's 7 seasons total over 60 assists) plus Danny and another surprise teammate helper, Andre Boudrias (1 time). So for my ALL TIME Canucks top 2 lines I'm going with: Bure - Mogilny - Naslund (Centre)...kind of a soft line but I hope with speed and skill they can over power the defense Tanti - Danny - Hank (Centre)...a couple of tough players in the Sedins and a great finisher in Tanti. My next line I'll go with some grit and a bit of goal scoring prowess: Smyl - Bertuzzi - Linden (Centre) And then round it out with some toughness: Tiger - Gino - Paiement (Centre)...I went with Rosie as Centre since there aren't a lot of really tough Centremen in our history. Rosie put up 62 points in his first season here along with 152 PIMs. I guess another alternative here might be LaPierre but I think Rosie answers the bell more often than Max would. Or perhaps the best solution would be either Brashear or Hunter, and teach one of the 3 to take draws. Now for the backend. I gotta include Paul Reinhart (L), the only Canucks Dman to lead the team in scoring. Also must include Ohlund (L) and Jovo-cop (L). To round out the defense corps I'll go with Lidster (R), McCarthy (R) and finally the "Finnish MacInnes", Sami Salo (R)...which automatically means I need to have a backup right shot ready to go when (not IF) Sami goes down...so we'll add Francesco Bieksa (R) to the pressbox. Protecting the net must fall on Luuuuuuu and Captain Kirk. So here's my team (rotating the 2 Ass'ts like we did in the last 10 years): BURE - NASLUND "C" - MOGILNY TANTI - H.SEDIN "A" - D.SEDIN "A" BERTUZZI - LINDEN "A" - SMYL "A" WILLIAMS - PAIEMENT - ODJICK REINHART - McCARTHY OHLUND - SALO (BIEKSA) JOVANOVSKI - LIDSTER LUONGO MacLEAN Some arguments could be made for certain other players for sure (ie/ "the Butcher of Hastings" or the original policeman himself, Sneptsy) and for the up-and-comers (Petey and Quinn) but I'll stick with my team for now, thanks. Just hand over the cup...

Not a time to panic (RHD Proposal - Discussion)
ABNuck replied to J.I.A.H.N's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
THIS should be our target right here...I would actually consider him an upgrade on Tanev to be honest...and only 26 Last 2 seasons combined Tanev blocked more shots (281 to 184) but Severson way out hit (164 to 61) and obviously outscored (70 to 32). He'd be worth Jake, Level 2 prospect, and a conditional 1st or 2nd (dependent upon if we make the playoffs and advance past the first round again). This initially would look like a bit of a win for the Devils (just like the Miller deal looked good for TBL), but in the long run I think we win. And maybe Damon would be happy to get out from behind Subban on the depth chart...play top pair... -
Not a time to panic (RHD Proposal - Discussion)
ABNuck replied to J.I.A.H.N's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Not quite sure how far in the future you're building with Alex Pietrangelo, a 30 year old (see Brent Seabrook or Brent Burns). If he won't sign a shorter term deal due to his age, then walk away. Do we really need to be back here again in 4 years saying "damn, that Pietrangelo contract is an anchor, now we can't sign any good forwards". -
[Signing] Oilers re-sign Mike Smith
ABNuck replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
ummm...huh? They just signed Forsberg yesterday...I guess nothing says to a 27 year goalie that "we signed you, but have little faith in you" like this signing. Unless Forsberg is being protected and Smith and Kosky are the ones that will be exposed? -
[Signing] Red Wings sign Troy Stecher
ABNuck replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I'm a bit confused...originally it was reported that Stecher needed to be qualified by the Canucks, but on CapFriendly it stated that he did not need a QO. IF he did in fact need to be qualified by the Canucks, then I believe it would have had to have been a 2.5mil+ QO. And the Canucks would have been the only team held to that figure in Free Agency (all other teams could sign him to whatever he accepts). So again, if true, then JB could NOT offer Stech 1.7mil. Please correct me if wrong (is Wetcoaster around?...he knows this stuff) -
[Signing] Oilers sign Tyson Barrie
ABNuck replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Don't forget about the Seattle factor...it adds an additional negotiation factor. If a UFA doesn't want to go to Seattle eventually, and can't negotiate either a NM/NT clause in a new contract (or at least a guarantee of protection), then they just might pass on some offers by certain teams who have other priorities to protect next year. -
[Signing] Golden Knights sign Tomas Jurco
ABNuck replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
That guy has got to catch on fire somewhere eventually...he has all the skills, just no chemistry. Maybe he's hard to play with (see Rob Schremp or Josh Ho-Sang)? -
As much as this would seem like a great fit for us (and for most organizations), we need an NHL Dman. We CANNOT enter next season with a worse D than we had this past season. Tanev leaving left a huge hole in our top 4D, a top 4D that was a bit shaky on some nights (Thank-You Markstrom!) If we want to take that next step and be one of the top 8 teams in the league, we need to shore up our D.

Make history...2 NHL players named Johnson bought out in the same off-season.

Offersheet Deangelo?? (proplosal)
ABNuck replied to Whalespray's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Even though he's a lefty, if I was going to spend some picks on an offersheet, I'd gladly offer a contract to Sergachev as the future replacement to Edler. With all the money coming off the books over the next 2 years, I would then look to shore up the right side. Our Top 4 D going forward would be: HUGHES - ?RD? SERGACHEV - MYERS With a few options for the Bottom 6: Rathbone, Juolevi, Rafferty, and now Jurmo (who is a solid replacement for the Tree) If Hogs and Podz can fill roles in the Top6 then we'd have: HOGLANDER - PETTERSSON - BOESER MILLER - HORVAT - PODKOLZIN So I think I'd pass this year on Tony D, and take a shot at a guy we would rather lock up for 8 years instead. You can't say that Jimbo wasn't considering a Left D (instead of what we need, a Right D). He was working to get OEL here (I for one am glad it didn't happen), but at least you can't argue back that Tony D would be a more valuable O/S simply because he's a RD...it clearly looks like JB is open to either a righty OR a lefty. -

Thanks everyone...such an amazing network of very intelligent people on here...not sure if you'd find that on any other team's boards. Canucks fans might be the most hated fans in the league (cause we're so hard on other teams and their fans) but we certainly do watch out for our own...we're kinda like the annoying pest / enforcers of the NHL...we like to diss other teams and sometimes even our own team or fans, but if someone from another team disses us or our team, well...here comes the BOOM! We'll attack like a pack of rabid wolverines! But back to the point, I like the idea (THANKS D-MONEY) of just subscribing for a while to one (ie/ MGM on Prime), wear it out then move on. Since Rogers has stolen free access to hockey I try to make it my mission in life to never give them 1 penny of my business...it's hard because they own and control so much, but it's my personal little statement. And to GHOSTSOF1915...swede, swede, swede...were you quoting "Heartbreak Ridge"...another awesome movie BTW? And to those who mention a generational gap...I'm 56. When I mention "old movies" I'm pretty much talking about 1980-2005...any of the great movies from before 1980 I classify as "Classic"...one day "Airplane!" and "Space Balls" will be considered Classics by everyone too, just not yet. I like the classics like, as mentioned "12 Angry Men", but my taste is wide and varied, just like my music (I have everything on my IPOD from Jim Croce to 2Pac). Again, thanks to all...y'all are an awesome posse!

Thanks folks...I tried kanopy...my local library (Red Deer...a city of 100,000) doesn't subscribe, so I can't even access the service and search to see what their content holds. And as for Hoopla, well I typed in just 2 movies - Forrest Gump and Reservoir Dogs - No Results found...so that particular service doesn't have the 90's - 2000's movies either. Thanks for trying anyways. Just an entrepreneurial thought here...why didn't Blockbuster go online streaming?
-
So I've been hunting around the internet to find a streaming service that has good older movies (90's...early 200's etc). Many topics pop up that list what they deem as decent sites but when I go to those sites I see nothing but a bunch of C movies, and one channel actually had an amazing array of rip-off titles to similar titled A movies (for example the cover of one movie had a woman dressed up very much like Lara Croft, the title of the movie was "Tomb Invaders"...I kid you not...many, many others like that ie/ Triassic Park...I ain't makin' this crap up). So I'm guessing those site reviewers were paid to direct traffic to them. Anyways, I've tried POPCORNFLIX and TUBI.TV and neither had any of the "test" movies I plugged in. I searched for 3 basic titles that were basically "B" quality movies (Police Academy, Major League and Planet of the Apes - the Mark Wahlberg one) and each movie site returned "0 results". So if they don't even have any decent "B" movies, I'm guessing that they don't have any of the better movies from that time period (ie/ Forrest Gump, Pulp Fiction, Big Lebowski etc). Netflix and Prime (which I already pay for) are garbage...you can run through their available decent quality movies in about 4 Friday nights. So does anyone know of any streaming provider that actually DOES carry a decent selection of old titles? I'll even pay (subscription or user fee based). Man, do I miss Blockbuster...

[Discussion]What if Benning trades
ABNuck replied to Lazurus's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
I've never been a GM of a hockey club, but I was once an AGM of a Jr club...if you think for a second that all that GM's do is player related movements, then you have no idea what it takes to be a GM at the NHL level. Firstly, I would say that either being a lawyer or at minimum a CMA would be a starting point. Then you need to be a little bit of a sales rep, a spokesperson and a savvy purchasing agent. You need to understand the hockey "business", not just the hockey world. And that just gets you an interview. Who are your contacts in the hockey world? Who do you bring to the table? And again, not just locally or even nationally...how about internationally? And before you go making decisions and agreements with suppliers for goods and services, what do the players need or want? Have you spent time around the league knowing what NHLPA preferences are? ETC ETC ETC. A pro sports GM is a massive undertaking...it takes special skills, a huge network and a great deal of charisma to get the team to follow the direction you are leading them. This is why there are few people truly qualified to hold down such a unique position. You have to be a truly special talent to make it as a player in the NHL...and there's about 800-850 guys a year that get to do that...but there's only 32 jobs for GM available...the elite of the elite.
